    Ah, the legendary Fontana Drag City, also known in some circles as Mickey Thompson International Dragway, wasn't considered one of the major drag strips in Southern California but was important enough to establish a role in drag racing's foundation.
    The strip, which originated from the old abandoned Gilfillan Field, Played host to strong drag racing shows like the one featured in this classic film featuring the Mickey Thompson 200mph Club Meet. The video is appropriately named "The Gathering of Monsters" and featured the best of the best in Double-A Fuelers back in 1965.

      @@michaelmccabe2404 I think people just remember when it was possible to have a top running car and afford it without all the big money these days, but idk. I love it then and now!

    M & H finally made a slick that cut down on the start to finish tire spin.

    We would test and tune at Colton then try to make the show at Fontana. On the way between tracks we snapped an axle on the trailer and sat along the freeway for what seem like days waiting for someone who could weld the axle back on. Then we would just get there in time to make a pass and blow the engine in the traps....That was a weekly event in the early years of drag racing a FED.

    That was great 😊 thank you... My grandparents had a farm next to Detroit dragstrip when I was growing up and I would sneak in the pits all the time..

    Is that Foothill in the background at 8:11? I didn't realize the track started that close. Cars going by on a road while dragsters are flying down the track, what simple times.

      Yes it is. It ran in a North slightly East direction from Foothill towards Baseline ave. Right near the powerlines. Been a housing track there since ‘90. Cross street at Foothill was East ave. About a mile E of the I-15.

    It's hard to believe a full bodied turbocharged four cylinder on methanol from today can go faster than a top fuel hemi dragster of this era

    Random question and please dont be rude about it... But did those tires smoke like that due to not being wide enough or their quality? Or lack of I guess? I know they aren't like modern tires, but just always wondered. Thanks for these amazing treasures!

    • @deadasfboi
      @deadasfboi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The tires were smoking like that, is because they didn't do a burn out to warm up the tires enough to have more grip on the pavement. So when they went off the tires will keep spinning, and smoking like that until enough it got grip.

      That's how it was done then. If you want to know what it was like back then, check out the Surfers series on TH-cam (they won this race).

      That’s how it was done before the slipper clutch became common.

    • @VGMurders
      @VGMurders 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They didn’t spray the tracks with glue back then either. The tires had stiffer sidewalls so spinning was normal.

    No guard rails and light poles down track. Yikes. Those guys were warriors.

      Not only that, but one of the top magazine guys landed his plane on the strip between rounds! He left the same way!

    No burnouts. No wonder their tires smoked the whole way down the strip. Also notice the tree is different
