    We had a dairy here in Eastern WA. for many years , we had winters down to minus 20 with 30 MPH winds [ that's about 60 below zero ] COLD ! I know that is not as cold as N.D. !

    The farm is huge, and from the drone it looks smaller than it actually is. Nice to see you also watch SaskDutchKid, I have been following Jan & Neline (A dairy on the prairie) for quite a while now. Are you by any change acquainted to each other? Love your vid's Piet. Dank je wel!

    Wonderful video, thank you for sharing about dairy farming. I've always wondered: do the cows always go to their same stall? Or is it random? Seemed like they knew which stall they were going to.

    • @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047
      @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047  ปีที่แล้ว

      Some of the cows will try to go to the same stall or the same group of stalls that they get used to.

    Impressive operation! Really like how clean it is. Compliment to your workers. I think this is the barn where you switched to sand bedding. Any conclusion if it was worth the effort?

    • @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047
      @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We switched the dry cow pen in this barn to sand, I think that was a good change. We are seeing less mastitis and lower scc in early lactation cows.

  • @pollyturner47
    @pollyturner47 ปีที่แล้ว

    This might be a dumb question but do the cows go to any stall or do they go to the same one every time?

    • @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047
      @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047  ปีที่แล้ว

      They won't always be in the exact same stall, but they'll likely go to the same area of the pen to lay down.

    How do you calculate how many dietary inputs you need to accumulate for the next year? Haylage, silage, earlage, oats, etc. Is there a "simple" calculation based on head count by type whether calves, milkers, breeders, etc? I am truly impressed by how much hay and silage/earlage you have set aside for the next year. Great stuff.

      I have a pretty good idea how much forage we need based current usage, which is tracked by our feeding program. After harvest this fall I know what we have for inventory and start contracting feed for next fall. We always try to shoot for more than we need in case we have a poor crop.
