Thanks for giving Troy the spotlight on why it’s important for parents to acknowledge that Cochlear Implants do not cure and do not restore to normal hearing sounds. LEAD-K is the best place to start learning on how to raise a normal Deaf child like Troy and I did. Again thank you John Papola!
One of the best interviews I've ever watched! Being from Gloucester where CODA was filmed and being a hearing person I felt Troy was actually signing with a Gloucester accent!
This was a great video. I would like to add that cochlear implants do not exclude an individual from identifying as Deaf and from taking part in the Deaf community. The reason why parents make the decision to have their children implanted is because there is a critical period for acquisition of oral language skills, which is within the first two years of life. Children who qualify for a CI at this young age are the ones that receive none or very limited benefit from hearing aids. I am sure the percentage of kids with CIs that go back to their parents and say: “thanks for taking me to all those appointments and speech therapy so today I can choose if I want to speak or sign or do both” is a lot higher than the percentage of adults who go back and say: “why did you give me a CI, I am not hearing, I am Deaf”. Parents must make many decisions for their children. It is part of being a parent. Giving your child the opportunity to have access to sounds is a decision many hearing parents make. They are not trying to change their child and make them someone else. They are trying to give their child access to the current technological advancements scientifically proven to provide access to sounds. Thats all.
The crude language was the only bad part of it, it was to much, Deaf children and hearing children do not need to hear and see that kind of language. Yes it's life and that's sad, but you don't need to build a movie off crude language, why can't it be family friendly. Not all Deaf and Hard of Hearing people talk or sign that way. It very offensive to some. Love Troy and his wife Deanne.
