I have a request for the next banished. I would like to see you build some of the other stuff in the game. Specifically a tunnel, stone roads, and a boarding house.
I had an entire town crash and die because I ran out of tools and the blacksmith would make a tool, deliver it, then walk back to the smithy, realize they had no tool, and head back to get one. But before they could get there someone else would take it! If a person doesn't have a tool and picks one up to deliver it somewhere they should just start using it! No wonder these people were banished.
I love watching these. Watched some others but yours is great. Somewhere I read that hunters can also use clear lands. Herbs help your people's health when variety is low in the food source. But then this is watching and reading anything I can since I want this game so bad. Thanks to you I have learned even more. Please don't stop providing these videos. They are great fun to watch and actually great tutorials.
A good building tip is to make sure you have ALL the resources on hand (logs, stone, iron) BEFORE you build. This way, the builders and laborers will bring as much material as they can carry to the build site. If you are 20-30 units short of logs, stone or iron, they will only transport those materials to the build site as they become available, so they'll waste a lot of time running back and forth carrying 1-2 units at a time.
I wish this game had the "settlers" style of setting work area's. That way you could make sure that all the buildings maximize the workable area in maps like these. Like with the little outcropping on the right, you can only place so many buildings in the center and the others will work mostly mountain because they are more on the edge - imagine being able to have all work area's centralized in the entire workable area instead.
you look left and up? and left and down? and straight ahead... could you do a behind the scenes video of you setup and maybe also a few video's about how you make the youtubes :) by my calculation you have 4 screens and a robot properly named Brussels...
Maybe planning and laying down all the roads and buildings first is the way to go. Then you could pause some buildings and delete the roads before builders waste time on building them. I figure that way you'll have a solid and efficient design from the get go that should really help with such starting conditions...spread stuff out later on if you fancy and re-model the village. Who knows...
The entire time i was just like, build that house. build that house. seriously build the houses. OMG QUILL BUILD THE HOUSES ITS AUTUMN THEY WILL DIE OMG
Watched up to the restart so far. You do not need a forest lodge right at the start! First thing you do is Fishing dock, put 4 to fish. Then build 4 houses. Then you can concentrate on gatherer, etc...
As quill said before, the gathering is practically overpowered at the start. It's just like how Tropico 4 plays differently than everyone says; Three hotels, Scenic Outlook, Beach Site, Marina & Cocktail Bar is actually the way to start.
True it is overpowered but I think he is underestimating the fishing. I've watched other peoples videos and fishing is enough so you don't starve. Anyway, after watching the whole video the real problem was building a bridge and a foresters guild before building houses.
ThePeacemaker848 I think the problem was the stall in stone. He went practically a whole season not building anything. Also, you only need to get one house up. People will rotate in to get warm.
I think people change their jobs based on where they live. In one of your former episodes (don't remember wich one sadly) I saw one of your households change jobs after you build a work-providing building near it. It were the same people, but the jobs changed if I recall correctly.
22:00 This brings an interesting question.. Because i was thinking about wether or not the villagers will even work that far away in cold harsh winters, due to needing to be kept warm. The game ingame help and stuff states that villagers need to return to their homes to burn firewood, in order to stay warm in winter. They will actually abort work to go back home to bring their warmth up. So with that in mind, do they keep home-level heat when they are inside workplaces such as the woodcutter, foresters, hunting lodge or gatherers hut? Or does any work in these places, even if the villager is "inside" the building, count as being outside and in freezing cold? If it counts as being outside, they may not do any work at all in freezing winter unless they have a house right across the street to pop into every few minutes to raise their warmth.
Hay Quill, sence children go into the school house during the winter, do you think that having a school house gives better survival odds to the children? OR does it mean that they HAVE to go out during the winter season causing them to walk in the cold (Thus being worse for them)? This might be important for families of gathers', herbalists, hunters ect.
Mountain Man is an easy achievement to get, the annoying part is waiting 20 years once you hit population 50. 2 Good Gatherers Huts (or 3 Decent Gathers huts are more than enough to feed at least 50 people. 25 houses should be sufficient, plus a few extras just in case to avoid the old age die-off. Add a number of good fishing spots and a couple Hunters Cabins and you can comfortably do 100-150 people. If you're just going for the Mountain Man achievement, you probably don't even need the Quarry. Surface stone should be sufficient, though a Mine might be necessary depending on how many tools can be produced with the surface iron and how high of a population you want to push on this map. Try doing Isolationist on this map (300 people without a Trading Post), now there is a challenge.
With my logitech g35 headset, your mono audio mistake is automatically converted into stereo, while the headset is toggled to surround. So no worries on my behalf Quill :)
Dude cannot believe you started over. I was sitting round waiting on Ep 20. checked your playlists and I was like wait.. what.. 26 videos?? But, lol, everyone loves a restart!
I know the audio setting isn't too bad for most but, it actually makes me sick like bad FOV in a game or headbob in a game. :X it is a shame too cause I really like watching you play this game quill!
I cant get enough banished I've learned so much from watching you play. I tried watching some other youtubers play after watching 9 of your lets plays and couldn't get through them because of all the noob mistakes they make More please!!!!
Priority in year 1: Food (1 fishing hut with 2 workers), Houses, woodchoper, forester, gathering lodge, hunter. After that you can breath some and just have to remember to keep clearing trees and stone.
I think the only thing I want added to this game is control over what can be stored in the storage piles. Would be nice to set a little storage pile by the blacksmith with just iron in it, or a pile by the woodcutter for lumber...
Just finished... Nice progression, but I don't see any space problems, you'll just have to give up that forest across the river, replacing it with crops, or more fishing? Still plenty of other places than that for leather and herbs.
quill18 on all your recent videos your sound is off. I'm wearing ear plugs and while there's sound in both ears what my left ear hears is so different then what I hear in the right it might as well just be broadcasting to my right. This happens ONLY on your recent livestreamed videos all your older videos are fine and no other videos (I've seen on youtube) or twitch stream have this "problem." To go into some details the way I would describe it is that the right side is really high pitch and sharp while the left side is really low and almost muffled. The issue seems to be isolated to earplugs/earphones, please revert to your older setting to before a few days ago when this started happening, thank you.
KevinOnTheInternet thanks for the heads up for the explanation @ 03:15, goot to hear he's aware of it; and hopefully will fix it for the next videos/streams. The effect just kills the video for me so didn't listen/watch past the first minute.
I know it's probably impossible that you read all of your comments, but I wanted to leave a little something regardless. So many people create short content videos, and deliver so much less then you do. Because of that I've REALLY enjoyed watching your longer videos as I get far more immersed into the game (that I haven't even gotten to play yet mind you). You do an awesome job narrating along the way, and give educational feed back that I will be sure to use when I get the chance to play. Basically to sum it up, love the content and keep up the vids. Thanks much.
"A" or "An" is not determined by the first letter in the word, but de sounding of the first syllabus. In other words, he wrestles with the a/an because the pronounciation is a little disputed depending on where you live.
What this game needs: *Social Problems, most of the game difficulty relies on food and cold vs supply. Happiness doesn't seems to cover all of the posible social unrest-you were BANISHED meaning you should have at least one black sheep in your town-
I think you should have built the gatherers hut (and so on) in the southeast part, I think, and used the south for farming/quarrying/herding, doing it over a river seems like a bit of a waste, tbh.
Gatherers look like they are a lot more efficient than other food sourcers, but they will use a lot of space, wich will make them live far from your town. They produce food, but will require laborers to carry all the food they produce to the town center. In the space a gatherer will work it looks like it's possible to place some farms for increased space efficiency (though it will require lots of people).
You mustn't over look the fact that you can overlap certain cottage industries (i.e. gatherers, hunting, & forestry) and they work synergetically - which you can't with do farming.
How I'd like to see it work (no idea if this is what the dev wants, but it seems to be similar): Gatheres produce a lot of food with a lot of space and light labor Farms produce a lot of food with a lot of labor, but use less space relatively and can control placement. Hunting produce moderate food + leather. Fishing produces good food but limited placement and high variance.
Benz1659 I'm not overlooking it, but once you have enough wood, leather and herbs agriculture will allow for a higher population density (or at least that's how I expect it to work).
Agreed, as long as it's recognized as a long-term plan, and not a crisis intervention. I'm not advocating to never use farms - simply not to rely on them in the beginning.when you're already facing a critical shortage.
Without Laborers to deliver goods to the Job Site the Construction people cannot build. Construction designation means the person will *only* build things, they will not "labor". So what will happen is what you saw in that first attempt. You designated buildings to be built, which is a valid job for a Construction unit. they will constantly go to job sites and look to build, but will be unable to build unless the materials are there. Since it is considered a valid job they *will not* switch back to laboring to get the materials there themselves. Only an invalid job will stop them from their assigned job and I believe only 2 conditions trigger an Invalid Job: 1. They run out of the workable material needed for the Job such as Iron or Stone or 2. They reach the maximum limit set for that particular item (such as 200 logs). In this case you had plenty of Logs and Stone for the buildings, but because the materials were not at the job site there could be no construction and since the construction jobs were not invalidated by any of these conditions people just idled until they died.
MrRawRity Just logic from what I was able to glean in the video. Look at about 13:20 and you will see all of his Workers are puttering back and forth between the stockpile and the housing near the stockpile. They cannot do anything because they are not laborers and cannot move the materials to the site.
Were they not picking up materials? Seems odd. I might watch over a few of the earlier ones where he would follow the builder just to see how they work.
MrRawRity They were moving materials out of the stockpile but not to the job site, because they do not have the valid job for it./ That is why there was a huge circle of small piles of stuff around the stockpile. I think the issue has to do with what a worker can and cannot do. I do not think they are allowed to deliver items to a job site unless there is a laborer queuing that job themselves, because it becomes a job with no available units to complete it. Workers will bring materials to a job site provided there is a laborer available to make such a task "active" otherwise without an active laborer the job of delivering supplies becomes "inactive" and cannot be fulfilled.
Trent8086 I would agree with you but only one problem. I have played the game for 8 hours and I ran into a shortage of laborers and people still delivered materials to the build sites granted at a less priority then a laborer who has no designated job.
quill if u continue this map pls get some houses in this backvalley with the hunter and gatherer in it! cause ur people are running back to your town everytime they are hungry or cold which takes away your food produktion!
i would love the game more if you could designate which stockpiles got what resources. There was a game back in the day called Pharoah and it let you do that...it was very handy!
Quill, why is your voice only in my right ear? Took some time getting used to :D And so quiet ingame sounds and music? :'( Oh well, it's Banished, i'd accept constant static merged with dubstep if i have to! Another great video, best Banished gameplay on the internets!
I wonder, If we all focus on Feb 18th in our heads, Maybe we will all time travel.... I know I'm clutching at pathetic straws now but NEED! REQUIRE! WANT!
No houses for the exiled people to the east though :P Gahh...needs more Banished... I like how you mentioned it in SimCity, that you can't multiplay in Banished, and I think it'd actually be cool if you could, at least like a dual (not duel). Take this ridiculous map, what if you started a bit further south, like where you put the second forest lodge and a second player spawend somewhere north of your original spot. Both going Oh this is MY field/forest and so on, or helping one another if that's their thing. :P I mean multiplay is usually optional, it would make for something very different, people starving in one town and freezing in the other would be fun though.
I like your idea of multi-play potential for either competing for resources, or symbiont support. That way oppositional play could prove supplemental; while similar styles could lead to new diplomatic opportunities. I'd suggest leaving the "Small" maps for solo gaming, as that's a recipe for immediate conflict.
Ever thought of playing age of empires? 2 is probably the best, it's strategy and the makers of the game have put it up on steam and have updated it even though there is a sequel out, (that's commitment)
You really sound like you call yourself Quillitine :P Also with regards to where people live/jobs, I saw in one of your earlier videos the same people were living in a house but changed their job to match what was nearer where they lived so it seems they change job.
I wish I could give you multiple likes! I'm so incredibly eager to play this myself. So much so, that in every spare moment I find myself already strategizing for my inaugural town. Someone boot Luke in the bum and make him release EARLIER! Today would be ideal. Just sayin'...
JezaGaia ... and miss 24 hours of play?!? No way, too painful to even imagine. I agree. Not sure if i'm being masochistic watching all these let's plays, but not doing so seems worse. =}
You're kinda on to it...it's "a" before a consonant and "an" before a vowel. Thus, an 'erbalist and a Herbalist, depending on whether you pronounce the leading "H", which are both equally valid, btw. :)
I got this achievement. Go me. Actually had over 100 people most of the time so 50 is very doable. I did restart until I got a halfway decent map but all the maps are pretty bad. I also used the hard start but I don't think you have to do that for the achievement.
Aaaaand just found your channel. If this is anything to go by I'm going to be enjoying my stay! And like you said... A Herbalist, or An (h)Erbalist. Though being from UK the latter makes me want to take those 'Erbs' and shove them somewhere. All in good fun, of course :D
Sorry, forgot to send get well soon wishes, and suggest a Whiskey, w/a Whiskey chaser will have you feeling right as rain in no time! =3 Seriously, as the song says "Take good care of yourself, you belong to (us)".
Thanks Spider :) Another really stupid question for anyone that knows, I tried to livestream Banished but all I got was a black screen streamed! Anyone know how to solve this?
"We would like people to live near their houses" Quill18 - 2014 @48:41

53 minutes of Banished. Not enough! Need more! :D

Caesar has barbarian invasions, and it was a game like this.
I miss that series.
Those were the days, great times.
you look left and up? and left and down? and straight ahead...

Snow on ground before any house was begun
In the game options if you scroll down to the bottom, there is a GUI slide bar, moving it to the left will shrink the panels on-screen.

Water is one thing a lot of games fail miserably with. It moves in one direction, banks irrelevant.

I think that gathering is fine for just starting out a village, but farms have a better food per tile production since gathering takes so much space.
With my logitech g35 headset, your mono audio mistake is automatically converted into stereo, while the headset is toggled to surround. So no worries on my behalf Quill :)

Do a Let's Play with this city
I cant get enough banished
I've learned so much from watching you play. I tried watching some other youtubers play after watching 9 of your lets plays and couldn't get through them because of all the noob mistakes they make
More please!!!!
this game fully comes out on my birthday!
Priority in year 1: Food (1 fishing hut with 2 workers), Houses, woodchoper, forester, gathering lodge, hunter. After that you can breath some and just have to remember to keep clearing trees and stone.
young quiet Quill popping up in the suggestions. Got me playing Banished CC again tonight
This game is really so many types of cool, dig watching you play it, big fan!
You, sir, are obliged to play this until I can do so myself.
I have to say i'm excited to play this game for myself but I would love to see more gameplay for banished.
The glithing tree is amazing, it dances
I think the only thing I want added to this game is control over what can be stored in the storage piles. Would be nice to set a little storage pile by the blacksmith with just iron in it, or a pile by the woodcutter for lumber...

I cant wait to throw my money at the guy who made this game. This looks freaking amazing!
Don't get too exuberant, it may incite him to elevate what has already been bantied as a ca. $20 price.
This is on sale this week on Steam and on his website for $4.99 - a Bargain

ya I got it
XD

Is it just me or when he leans back the sound balances out a little?
Don't forget the mead Quill! no mountain clan is complete without ample ale about.
Congratulations! You just became my 69th subscribed channel! Great number to be! :D
The Invisi-mug of quill! i like that mug

Does the time of year determine what food source you should use? For instance can your gatherer get food in the winter?
I am so pumped for this game! COME ON BE FEBRUARY 18 ALREADY!!!! :)
Once you cleared out all the resources that flatland area looked a lot bigger.
those settings are great. nice video.
Flll
Just for future reference Quill it's "a Herbalist" because H isn't a vowel, you only use "an" before a word if that said word starts with a vowel.

Yeah lol, and I accidentally bought it twice...
Tyler King send me a copy lol :3

Do you have to be online in order to play this Banished game?
This Banished game looks like more fun to play then SimCity 5.
i like this start but picking some other hard map would be good for me maybe a harsh mountains large map so maybe you get screwed with the river again
A Tailor Swift and your expression... I had to pause the video because I couldn't watch due to me dying of laughter.
I don't understand what is using up the wood. When there is no construction going on, the wood supply still depletes?
Awesome,more banished!
Can we play it already? and are you gonna still produce the lets play on the lost city brussels :D?
FYI: I did some experimenting and the proportion of water matters to fish quantity.
Make this a lets play! i want to see Holdine after 20 years!
Hey quill! I love ur videos (especially the eu4 ones) and im just wondering how yiu do that subscriber thingbcome up whenever u get a new subscriber.
This 50 people challenge is interesting on this terrain. Maby you could try a bigger nr. of people in Brussels, like the 300 :D
I love this game
Quill, why is your voice only in my right ear? Took some time getting used to :D
And so quiet ingame sounds and music? :'(
Oh well, it's Banished, i'd accept constant static merged with dubstep if i have to!
Another great video, best Banished gameplay on the internets!
Works fine for me, bit low volume though
Maybe I've been playing too much DayZ, but the road between the two mountains reminds me of Elektro.
4:32 Why did the tree in the bottom left just fall? Do they have an age limit in Banished?
I wonder, If we all focus on Feb 18th in our heads, Maybe we will all time travel.... I know I'm clutching at pathetic straws now but NEED! REQUIRE! WANT!
You saw how that worked for Cartman...
Haha True enough. . . . But twiddling my thumbs only keeps me occupied for like 8 hours a day ;_;
Try twiddling in reverse, works for me as then its time for bed. lol
I'd suggest leaving the "Small" maps for solo gaming, as that's a recipe for immediate conflict.
what you think 25°C are high? In Germnay it gets up to 35°C
Ever thought of playing age of empires? 2 is probably the best, it's strategy and the makers of the game have put it up on steam and have updated it even though there is a sequel out, (that's commitment)
Are you going to stream (and upload to youtube) more of these?
Man, he looks so young in this.
Today ? No way! Yesterday though that would work :P
I love Quill's LPs of Banished but it's also frustrating to see and not be able to play.
JezaGaia ... and miss 24 hours of play?!? No way, too painful to even imagine. I agree. Not sure if i'm being masochistic watching all these let's plays, but not doing so seems worse. =}
I Want this game !!! :D
just stop everything... and pla Banished!!!!
No laborers, no building.
love the videos, keep them going. tks for making them.
Can you give us the Seed info for that map you used for hard Brussels? I really love that map and When I get this game I want to use it please?
what episode was the death march in? i'd like to see it :D
i wish they had the occasional bandits or deadly creature to fight in and to have guards to keep crime a all time low that would be awsome :D
My left ear feels lonely ;_;
Put your finger in it. But only your finger...
Aaaaand just found your channel. If this is anything to go by I'm going to be enjoying my stay! And like you said... A Herbalist, or An (h)Erbalist. Though being from UK the latter makes me want to take those 'Erbs' and shove them somewhere. All in good fun, of course :D
What time is Quil18's live stream??
Oh my god this comes out February 18th, which is a Tuesday :(( I wish it came out on a Saturday...I'll have to call in sick or something (for a week)
For your boss, you were sick. But for you, it was Tuesday? Who do you think you are, M. Bison?
Hey do you do play games with your viewers or just other youtubers?
The video uploaded before this one shows his 'SimCity multiplayer with subscribers'-livestream.
Murkiry Oh ty
was the name, ThereDone or TheRedOne?
I'm in Australia, it's 25 Celsius at 1am.
Ummm... no thank you.
The fisherman would catch the fish with his hands. It is possible, but requires much skill
I keep watching all your videos, but im late to getting the news that they came out :(
So I assume the sub called (according to Quill) "there done 7" is actually "the red one 7". I giggled
Sorry, forgot to send get well soon wishes, and suggest a Whiskey, w/a Whiskey chaser will have you feeling right as rain in no time! =3 Seriously, as the song says "Take good care of yourself, you belong to (us)".
Was this livestreamed onto TH-cam? I still have no idea how to watch the live streams on here!!
Quill usually live streams on Twitch at twitch.tv/quill18 at certain times if you want to catch his streams
Thanks Spider :)
Another really stupid question for anyone that knows, I tried to livestream Banished but all I got was a black screen streamed! Anyone know how to solve this?
I haven't bought Banished yet - what do the different numbers on the population display mean - like at 26:00 it says 14/0/7
Adults/Students/Children
please stay with brussels
