+Sudo Man It's not uncommon for people to upload a video as unlisted, share the link with close friends/family to do a quick sanity/content check, and then change it to public after. Also, that process gives TH-cam's servers enough time to transcode it into every resolution you would want it to support. If it were to immediately be made public there would be some variable about of time where the video would only be viewable on 360p, or even, *shudder* 240p, as TH-cam works to finish the HD transcoding.
+Matt and Tom 6:55 Case in point: The entire video was unfortunately seemingly out of focus, but there are still going to be a lot of people watching it
+d3rrial Actually, I think that might be me hitting a wrong button in my editing software? The camera we use is often too crisp and sharp, so I may have gone a bit too far the other way. -- Tom
"I assume no one is watching this..." We're watching Tom, and laughing with you :) You too Matt. Just discovered you both on TH-cam. Cheers guys for making my smile!
I really hope "twote" will become the official imperfect past tense of "tweet" when it is added to the dictionary in 10 years. Hopefully it will be sure to cite "linguist Tom Scott" as coining the term and/or the first recorded use.
Just want to second my appreciation for the neutrik dual connectors, some of the most beautiful things that have been introduced to the audio/video industry
I happened to buy a Røde Smarlav+ a while ago for youtube stuff I was planning, but then I've been distracted by finishing my studies and never got around to making any new content… It's nice to see Tom recommend it, I feel justified in that purchase now.
Yes, I'm laughing. Usually i skip off to the next video when closing credits start to roll on TH-cam videos, but you guys are training me to stick around. Good stuff.
+matte1402 That depends on the style of the video. If the maker never puts anything after the credits, I'm much less likely to watch until the end of the video.
+Mercenary Pen "Because the only real alternative is really off-colour humour..." "real alternative is really off-colour humour..." "off-colour humour" "colour" Get out you with your filthy British spelling. There is no U in color, AND I WILL DEFEND THAT 'TILL THE END OF MY DAYS!
Americans.... they hate "U", in Canada, The United Kingdom, and much of the rest of the world, we love "U" because it just fits into words better than without, and it looks better.
Is there a reason you don't mount the shotgun mic on top (or beside) the camera and point it at you, rather than holding it in your hands? At that range it should be fine (and would eliminate mic rattle).
For the best video editing software (best because it is better than Premiere at Colour Grading, and not half-bad at cutting provided you've got a good enough processor - and principally because it has a basically full-feature free version assuming you're a one-man band...) is Da Vinci Resolve. Not many people know about it - but it's definitely worth giving a go. :) You'll have to watch a few tutorials to understand the node system, but after that you'll never want to go back to anything else. (coming from someone who has also tried Premiere and FCPX)
Yep, very good, but it is a little fiddly and is inconsistent with other software. Also some things (e.g. text body) can't be keyframed/dynamically changed.
For the filming on a potato thing, I don't know if you know this already or not but you can actually stick lots of pieces of copper and zinc into the one potato, and get the same amount of power, as if you used multiple potatoes for each wire, as you are increasing the surface area for the reaction to take place on.
That dead cat mic cover works amazingly well! ( I'm thinking of Shenley ) In most cases the audio would have been absolutely ruined by the wind, but with that set up you hardly hear a thing! I wonder though, if the shotgun mic itself helps reduce the wind noise too?
I think you are both equaly unfuny for someone who stumbles over this and isn't some kind of nerd. But I really love it (Ok, I admit it, I am huge nerd too)! I think it also takes time until you get all the things because it takes time to get to know you. Keep up the good work. Always very intresting to hear you talk
Directly under the video is a Google ad "SPONSORED - Shop for Park Bench Kit" Thank you Google Ads; I had a strong urge to build my own bench after watching this.
As for kit, most of the stuff I used to have on my channel was shot on a Panasonic DMC-FS10 (apart from one video that was shot using the Facetime camera on the Macbook I was using at the time). While I now also own a Sony HDR-CX240 I haven't actually done anything to camera for personal reasons. If I do anything in future I've also got a Samson Go-Mic that I run into Audacity for sound.
One thing I use is Hitfilm 3 Express. It's free and powerful, but it can't do slow mo or fast mo, the whole video has to be the same framerate, and the developers arbitrarily added a no-4K video limitation.
Rode's products are brilliant! I'd highly recommend the Stereo VideoMic Pro for a DSLR mic! A cheap lav setup (providing you already own an iPhone) that I've used in the past is iPhone's voice notes app with Apple's earbuds - makes for decent-quality audio!
+proefslak Rode's website says the smartLav+ is only compatible with certain HTC, Samsung, Motorola, Google, LG, and Apple devices :( I don't own the smartLav+ or an Android phone so another user (who ideally has both) may know if there's a way :)
Helios 44-2 is a brilliant Russian 1980s lens (millions of them all over ebay) that has an m42 mount, so it will work with any dslr with an adapter, the DoF on that thing... its bokeh king.
If you don't already work with adobe software, don't. Adobe software like any software requires you to learn it, and switching away from it will require you to do a lot more learning. Thats why adobe has student pricing, they want you to become dependant on them. Instead learn to use something like davinci resolve and a Daw like Ardour or Reaper. you'll save thousands in the long term and not be stuck with a subscription
GoPro has a "flat" setting for recording the most detail if you want to save the color-grading for later. I film everything flat and then forget to do the color grading, so my footage stays looking bland and desaturated in all of its original glorious detail.
I specifically came because I heard Tom was using the Zoom H1n from Alec of Technology Connections, and wanted to hear Tom's input on it I stayed for the goofiness
late as all heck, but did you get your camera from a man that is a bellringer at their local consistory second hand? because it than could be Pachelbel's canon in 7D?
Can I suggest that if you have any video card (from ATI\AMD or NVIDIA [not sure about Intel]), install the GoPro Studio and convert all your footage to GoPro's CineForm codec. It spits out .AVI files that are big, however they are now GPU accelerated because CineForm is, making it much faster to edit video.
Love these videos expecially this. I bought a SmartLav + and it seems great for now. It needs an adapter to connect to a dslr (at least my canon eos 700d) but its seems to be more than good. :) (though it sucks that there isn't an actual offical Rode Rec app for Android; its only available for Apple) Thanks Matt and Tom
hi! what would be the difference audio quality wise between plugging the smartlav into a pocket recorder such as the h1 as opposed to plugging it into a phone and using an app to record? Thanks!
I can recommend Sony Movie Studio Platinum too … Like +Seventeen Acres Development mentioned it's a small budget version of Sony Vegas … but for most use cases it's more than enought. I got my copy (Version 12) for about 35€ from Amazon…
Given the intro/outro are pre-rendered, this video cold have been made with Windows Movie Maker. Also, I believe all of the text would be centered on the screen, but it would be fine. GradeAUnderA uses MS paint and Movie Maker, and he has over 1 million subs.
The gopro editor might help me out for some college work (being a student I don't wanna spend money on premire if I don't have to) so if that works thanks in advance :)
0:52 "Let's start with the bench."

"It's made of wood. Some metal screws here and there. A few meters wide so multiple people can sit on it."
+batman9502 I can't believe they missed that.
nikkorap it's because it changes every few videos
Oh god that last bit killed me. Help.
Also, Tom's singing voice is spectacular.
One day, I'll learn to tone down my language. One day, Tom will learn that 1kHz is the usual tone for bleeping. --Matt
+Matt and Tom How did you post this comment 21 hours ago?
+Vewser Ah, thanks.

"Audio is king" - works at radio... I see no bias here
Totally true for TH-cam though. I have avoided a few potentially interesting channels because of audio issues...
Anyone in film would say the same, if they don't they're wrong.
But it's true.
...and thus is launched the singing career of Mad Cap'n Tom.
Seconded.
"We could basically do _Citation Needed_ from a park bench thanks to this thing."
Do it! :D
agreed
Dooooo iiiit!
+mittfh just here for the +1s
Citation Needed ON TOUR!!!
Worst. Joke. Ever Tom. I loved it. Matt looked ready to expire.
You broke Matt at the end there! B-)
I am loving this series because you two are such great storytellers. Thank you!
Settings for "Dynamic process the S**T out of everything"? :D
Everything needs that option...
"I assume no one is watching this..." We're watching Tom, and laughing with you :) You too Matt. Just discovered you both on TH-cam. Cheers guys for making my smile!
You two are so obviously best friends - I love watching you crack each other up :P
"potato power ... potato ... potato ... wires ... potato ..." And here I'm silently begging "Please say GLaDOS!"
You definitely need some googley eyes for your windjammer.
There was a crazy dog in the background that I could not stop watching.
Matt: And I bring the Lolz. Tom's facial expression: Priceless
+Mohd Waqar Kassamali I LAUGHED
Damn. That potato video would have been badass.
I really hope "twote" will become the official imperfect past tense of "tweet" when it is added to the dictionary in 10 years. Hopefully it will be sure to cite "linguist Tom Scott" as coining the term and/or the first recorded use.

Oh man, that joke at the end just about killed me.
I didn't get it
Magnus Juul hand-eye...
"Not a dong: hwoopf." -Tom Scott, 2016
Yes. I was laughing. Afterwards I nearly choked on my pie with co-ordination.
Loving this series! A good amount of the information goes right over my head, but you two are entertaining enough that I don' even care.
"Audio without video is radio. Video without audio is CCTV."
This is actually pretty interesting. Any plans on actually doing Citation Needed at the park bench?
Maybe a summer Citation Needed in someone's garden!
last 10 seconds.. brilliant!
Tom in a porno: "Oh yeah! I should point this at your face, shouldn't I?" (4:32)
Yes, we're laughing, Matt!! Nice video.
I happened to buy a Røde Smarlav+ a while ago for youtube stuff I was planning, but then I've been distracted by finishing my studies and never got around to making any new content… It's nice to see Tom recommend it, I feel justified in that purchase now.
what about now?
(Also phones don't have 3.5mm sockets anymore)
Yes, I'm laughing.
Usually i skip off to the next video when closing credits start to roll on TH-cam videos, but you guys are training me to stick around. Good stuff.
+matte1402 That depends on the style of the video. If the maker never puts anything after the credits, I'm much less likely to watch until the end of the video.
The fact that the thumbnail of this video isn't cropped out between Matt and Tom is infuriating
+Adam L hahahaha I did that on purpose to see if anyone complained :D --Matt
+Matt and Tom Yes. You are correct. Sony Vegas Pro is really good.
I wish this was also a podcast. So good.
I do agree, combo XLR/Jack is the far superior option to a standalone XLR connector
use cooked potato and foil or thin plates and you can get a battery at least 10x better.
Oh right, never heard this before!
HANNNNNNDDDDDDDDD EYYYYYYYYEEEEE!!!! Why are Brits so good at puns!

Gaffer-tape! Seriously, call yourselves geeks? :D
+Matt and Tom you have duct tape
+Matt and Tom 3D Printers are a thing now :D
To the camera tripod
That joke at the end 😂😂😂
Gotta love Matt’s laughter.
Oh my god I have the same hoodie as Matt! But all silliness aside, your way of shooting was cool to hear about.

Love that mc neat DJ luck tune. Absolute classic!
Love the SmartLav+! Amazing audio for its price!
I came here because I heard this was filmed on Matt's handy cam. And also the jokes.
... Mostly the jokes.
I can vouch for Sony Vegas. Really good piece of software.

15:33 _"... Are you laughing?"_
yes. yes, I am.
+ThoperSought 15:47 are you laughing _now?_
Nick Nirus
I did, yes. it was terrible, but I generally love terrible jokes.
ThoperSought I was just surprised. I expected a bit after the title card, but not that kind of bit. It was super funny to me, too.
Nick Nirus
heh, yeah, it was a surprise.
I say we have one episode of all of Matt's tangents over all of the episodes
listening to this on a pair of DT770s right now and yes, I can confirm, they ARE very, very comfy! +1 for Rode too, decent mics for a decent price!
Directly under the video is a Google ad "SPONSORED - Shop for Park Bench Kit"
Thank you Google Ads; I had a strong urge to build my own bench after watching this.
Your "leaning in" to speak right at the mike woke my cat.
Are you laughing?
No Matt, so sorry.
But Tom totally cracked me open.

The lulz are equally distributed among the benchees imo. The important thing is that they are had, in ample amounts. Cheers guys!

Specs on the bench?
Well it's old and discontinued for a start...
I think that joke at the end broke Matt.
+Mrluigifan102 I was thinking the same thing. "You broke Matt! Now who's going to run sound?"
Why the heck did that make me laugh? XD
didn't even know xlr/jack combo sockets were a thing.. The more you know!
Very nice video!
Very glad I stayed until the very end XD

To the linguist: "Lux" is Latin for "light".
You don't even need a camera stand. I personally use a book end :P
"And I'm Tom." *gruff voice* 😭
Maybe you want to put a link to the TH-cam Creator Academy in the "advice for beginners" section.

Yeah, I tripped over the Premiere + Variable Frame Rates thing a while back.
Citation needed on a park bench. Make it so.
4:44 Do I spot a Beyerdynamic DT 770?
EDIT: 6:33 Nevermind... (Goes into corner and sulks)
They took the spinning cubes in Shepherd's Bush down since that video went up :(
