  • What is the story behind the haka and what does the Haka mean to the All Blacks when they perform it? Go inside the players minds as they tell us what it means to them.

    I never tire of seeing the Haka. I’m Irish, but it always moves me. New Zealand has brought the Haka to the world and I am proud that it is part of our rugby culture.

      Quan Nguyen you seem to have the wrong idea from this video. NZ was colonised, by force. The ‘native culture’ was not and is not ‘embraced’ at all. The haka is loved because it’s been branded by this team. However our language is still not taught in schools, Māori are frequently told to limit when they perform haka and our treaty has never been honoured. This gives a false view of the relationship between our two peoples.

    • @Melda6682
      @Melda6682 4 ปีที่แล้ว +82

      Add to that.. NZ gives one week a year to celebrate te reo maori ..and that is not embraced by all. Sadly. Without ones indigenous language from.birth and in ones lifetime we will always be viewed as 2nd class citizens in our own country.

    • @daviejones31
      @daviejones31 4 ปีที่แล้ว +58

      What are guys talking? About every highschool in the country has a haka and they all teach te reo too I don't know when you guys grew up but the Maori culture is influential in almost every highschoolers life. I went to Hamilton Boys' and every 6 months we would stay at a marae for two weeks when training for rowing. The Maori culture is so unique and I think New Zealanders embrace it well. I'm a kiwi btw.

      JUAN BAUTISTA SEMENZATO I know a man(72 yo) from Brazil and he said that he wishes that the British colonised them instead of the Spanish, because then at least some part of the native Brazilian culture would have been saved. He said the native Brazilian language and culture has been lost and they’re almost synonymous with the Spanish and other Spanish colonies. In NZ Maori is recognised as 1 of 3 official languages, pretty much all schools have a haka and teach te reo Maori and have a marae. How has it not been embraced? What more can you want after being colonised. The Maori have it easy, they’re lucky to even be recognised

      When I was reading this comment, I thought you were about to say “I wonder how different things would’ve been if American settlers... settled in Aoteroa (nz)” and I was like ‘NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!’ But then I read the rest of the comment, but remember it’s not to late to embrace the native culture.

      Mr Gardiner much love & respect for your gracious words & acknowledging our haka. I must give kudos & acknowledge the English media as they were the ones responsible for giving us the nik name all blacks over 100 plus years ago back in the day. When they first saw our NZ rugby team. They were amased watching these rugby players running around in this all black uniform & they were just bloody good at our English rugby game. Trouncing their opposition along the way. As the NZ rugby team was touring around the UK playing games the media kept calling us the All Blacks. It stuck with us, we adopted the name & to this day we retained it & kept it. The name AB's is world wide known now & made the All Blacks the best team in the world or one of the best the teams in the World or World beaters.

    Hats Off to ALL the Kiwis for how an indigenous ritual is shared with respect and pride. The equivalent does not exist here in Canada without fear of being accused of cultural appropriation and we avoid indigenous icons like the plague. As a result, I feel we all lose something. I hope we can overcome these barriers some day. We will all be richer for it.

    My name is Hona, I live in the shadow of the Kuia Pihanga, the Gateway to Okahukura, where the big maunga sit. Great great great great grandson of Te Wharerangi. Ka Mate is indeed composed by Te Rauparaha, but he does it in honor of the man that saves his life. The man, Te Wharerangi, or the hairy man that lived on Motu-a-Puhi on Rotoaira. These two men were enemies. not friends, but at the request of Mananui, Te Wharerangi places himself and his people in jeopardy in order to save Te Rauparaha. Te Raupataha is saved and climbs out of his temporary tomb, and honors Te Wharerangi. This korero is carved into the Poutokomanawa on the Wharepuni Okahukura, at Otukou. This is our story, the whanau of Te Wharerangi. Time has ignored us, but it has been carved in wood.

      @@absoledge This is the Hollywood version. My whanau hold the true korero as you might expect. Te Wharerangi differed from Maori around him in that his male line doesn't arrive here on waka from Taputapuatea. We are Manawhenua, people of Okahukura. Te Rauparaha's ancestors arrive on waka. Te Wharerangi is killed for saving Te Rauparaha in a revenge attack. This occurs so that the Government can steal our mountains in the future with the assistance of other waka Maori. For my whanau, this eventa is an injustice, and an offence.
