I then was looked at like I was crazy. And to this day they don't take it serious to the point where they don't believe me. The process is just frustrating and when you get reponses like mine it makes you feel like "well, what was the point of me even telling anybody" the whole strong factor stems from seeing people like her come out regaurdless of potiental BS that can be thrown at her like with me. It encourages others to not deal with their pain alone in the shadows and to come out to the light so that they can be seen. There is a myth that has been spread for decades that says that people react to extreme situations with one of the two Fs, Fight or Flight. What people don't realize is that there is a third F, Freeze. People's Freeze reaction is what predators like these rely on. It's what leads victims to keep quiet after the fact. They are led to believe that Fight or Flight are the only reactions and that if they didn't react in one of those two ways then they are at fault in some way. I'm glad she is using her new found platform to share her story and hopefully helping prevent others from similar experience.
Well said. Many victims are often unsure how to react or gripped by fear. I hear from some women that their reaction was to "leave their body" while the crime was being done to them. It's just as legitimate a reaction as fight or flight. Life is never that simple or black and white.
That is excellent insight! And don't forget the shock. People are in shock when it happens and the rapist usually expects that as he's done it before and knows what to do. Then victims feel shame afterwards and that's HUGE! Women feel responsible, they feel they deserved it (same for male victims).
There are so many studies showing exactly this. You are almost a different person when you are being assaulted. It's easy to say exactly what you would do in that situation...when you are in your normal state of mind. It's easy to judge others on their reaction, especially when youve never been sexually assaulted

Insult to injury for me was the accusatory questioning: How short was your skirt/dress? What kind of shoes did I wear? How high are the heels? What kind of material is my skirt...my blouse? What color was your blouse? Is my blouse "see through"? What kind of bra? Is it regular or lacy? Does it hook in the back or front? Was I wearing underwear? What kind? Regular panties, "sexy" panties, a thong, or g-string? How many drinks did I have? What time did I drink? (One - a Flying Tiger; approximately 4pm.) NOTHING was asked about the USAF Officer who held me prisoner in his house; repeatedly raped me; and commented that I better not say anything because I'd only embarrass myself. A Chaplain tried to help, but the SPs and CID refused to do anything...because the Base Commander said I "got what I deserved, for being at the Officers' Club alone." (This was in 1988, Bitburg, Germany.) After that, I NEVER accepted a ride from anyone, again. I had called for a cab to take me back to the house where I was visiting. This monster overheard my call (made at the bar, using the telephone behind the bar) and said, "Hey, I know where he lives - I drive past his place on my way home. I can give you a lift." I trusted him - naively believing in the whole Officer and a Gentleman thing. There's no such thing. This poor woman and so many more went through hell (during what should have been a sacred and joyous time - her pregnancy) and powerful (aka MONIED) people/agencies protect the guilty (just as the Catholic Church). There is a GOD. And I firmly believe in HIS vengeance. I have to... I can't and don't trust "the system" of any kind. My prayers for all victims: women, children and men - of such deeply personal crimes against their bodies, minds and souls.

Afterwards I walked around in a daze unable to grasp what happened to me. I questioned what I was wearing, was I too friendly, why didn't I defend myself? These predators are very strategic and calculating. This doctor put her in a fearful condition by telling her she might need a c-section and then used her fear to disarm her to be able to assault her.
I have never been raped but I’ve had friends who were, and i have been molested on several occasions. “Freeze” is a common survival instinct that can kick in and take over. Once you become aware of the disturbing realization you are in danger, or being predated upon, you dont know who or what you are dealing with- you dont want to piss it off- you just want to escape alive. Survival instinct takes over you don’t get to choose or control what your response will be, its just pure instinct. It sucks that the minority of sick, depraved people cause so much suffering and loss of trust among the vast majority of decent, good people in the world.... and that it is the most vulnerable they tend to prey on, children, foster children, people with disabilities, people in care homes... and pregnant women?! Ugh i would be so murderously enraged if i were her baby daddy! That doctor should have had his license revoked!!!! Who was responsible for that decision or who or what body allowed him to keep it?! Its clearly malpractice! He should have been banned from ever practicing again. Truly outrageous.
He lost his license to practice medicine. The freeze response seems to often lead to shock which numbs people for hours or days. In my case, that shock meant I told no one and then the feeling that since I didn’t tell anyone right away, showered away evidence, laundered sheets, etc, I felt no one would understand WHY I said nothing. Even I didn’t understand it. Being molested as a child, I had already established that frozen, numb response to my grandfather, who I couldn’t escape. Being around him wasn’t safe, but telling my parents wasn’t safe either- quite the dilemma for an eight year old. I was fourteen when I had to tell my brother - he said my grandfather “would never do that.” I told my mother and she said “You better not tell your dad!” So TELLING anyone after a crazy man broke into my house and raped and tortured me for five hours, threatening to hurt my baby in the next room if I tried to get away, didn’t feel safe either. After keeping it a secret for several days, I felt like I did something wrong, so it was a long time before I ever told anyone. I struggled with numbing out during flashbacks, so found a rape crisis place and saw a counselor one time. She told me basically to snap out of it- being screwed up from being attacked gave the rapist power. Of course THAT compounded the problem! How many people carry such secrets and pain?

I then was looked at like I was crazy. And to this day they don't take it serious to the point where they don't believe me. The process is just frustrating and when you get reponses like mine it makes you feel like "well, what was the point of me even telling anybody" the whole strong factor stems from seeing people like her come out regaurdless of potiental BS that can be thrown at her like with me. It encourages others to not deal with their pain alone in the shadows and to come out to the light so that they can be seen.
And to that person who responded to you with something like "liberal agenda" bullshit. It shouldn't even matter where they are politcally on the spectrum. That shit can happen to anybody. Men also get sexually assaulted/harassed. It's even harder for them to come out with their stories. Because of the strong stigma society places on them. There is a myth that has been spread for decades that says that people react to extreme situations with one of the two Fs, Fight or Flight. What people don't realize is that there is a third F, Freeze. People's Freeze reaction is what predators like these rely on. It's what leads victims to keep quiet after the fact. They are led to believe that Fight or Flight are the only reactions and that if they didn't react in one of those two ways then they are at fault in some way.
I'm glad she is using her new found platform to share her story and hopefully helping prevent others from similar experience.

Well said. Many victims are often unsure how to react or gripped by fear. I hear from some women that their reaction was to "leave their body" while the crime was being done to them. It's just as legitimate a reaction as fight or flight. Life is never that simple or black and white.
That is excellent insight! And don't forget the shock. People are in shock when it happens and the rapist usually expects that as he's done it before and knows what to do. Then victims feel shame afterwards and that's HUGE! Women feel responsible, they feel they deserved it (same for male victims).

Insult to injury for me was the accusatory questioning: How short was your skirt/dress? What kind of shoes did I wear? How high are the heels? What kind of material is my skirt...my blouse? What color was your blouse? Is my blouse "see through"? What kind of bra? Is it regular or lacy? Does it hook in the back or front? Was I wearing underwear? What kind? Regular panties, "sexy" panties, a thong, or g-string? How many drinks did I have? What time did I drink? (One - a Flying Tiger; approximately 4pm.) NOTHING was asked about the USAF Officer who held me prisoner in his house; repeatedly raped me; and commented that I better not say anything because I'd only embarrass myself. A Chaplain tried to help, but the SPs and CID refused to do anything...because the Base Commander said I "got what I deserved, for being at the Officers' Club alone." (This was in 1988, Bitburg, Germany.) After that, I NEVER accepted a ride from anyone, again. I had called for a cab to take me back to the house where I was visiting. This monster overheard my call (made at the bar, using the telephone behind the bar) and said, "Hey, I know where he lives - I drive past his place on my way home. I can give you a lift." I trusted him - naively believing in the whole Officer and a Gentleman thing. There's no such thing.
This poor woman and so many more went through hell (during what should have been a sacred and joyous time - her pregnancy) and powerful (aka MONIED) people/agencies protect the guilty (just as the Catholic Church).
There is a GOD. And I firmly believe in HIS vengeance. I have to... I can't and don't trust "the system" of any kind.
My prayers for all victims: women, children and men - of such deeply personal crimes against their bodies, minds and souls.

These predators are very strategic and calculating. This doctor put her in a fearful condition by telling her she might need a c-section and then used her fear to disarm her to be able to assault her.
I have never been raped but I’ve had friends who were, and i have been molested on several occasions. “Freeze” is a common survival instinct that can kick in and take over. Once you become aware of the disturbing realization you are in danger, or being predated upon, you dont know who or what you are dealing with- you dont want to piss it off- you just want to escape alive. It sucks that the minority of sick, depraved people cause so much suffering and loss of trust among the vast majority of decent, good people in the world.... and that it is the most vulnerable they tend to prey on, children, foster children, people with disabilities, people in care homes... and pregnant women?! Ugh i would be so murderously enraged if i were her baby daddy!
That doctor should have had his license revoked!!!! Who was responsible for that decision or who or what body allowed him to keep it?! Its clearly malpractice! He should have been banned from ever practicing again.

The freeze response seems to often lead to shock which numbs people for hours or days. In my case, that shock meant I told no one and then the feeling that since I didn’t tell anyone right away, showered away evidence, laundered sheets, etc, I felt no one would understand WHY I said nothing. Even I didn’t understand it.
Being molested as a child, I had already established that frozen, numb response to my grandfather, who I couldn’t escape. Being around him wasn’t safe, but telling my parents wasn’t safe either- quite the dilemma for an eight year old. I was fourteen when I had to tell my brother - he said my grandfather “would never do that.” I told my mother and she said “You better not tell your dad!” So TELLING anyone after a crazy man broke into my house and raped and tortured me for five hours, threatening to hurt my baby in the next room if I tried to get away, didn’t feel safe either.
After keeping it a secret for several days, I felt like I did something wrong, so it was a long time before I ever told anyone. I struggled with numbing out during flashbacks, so found a rape crisis place and saw a counselor one time. She told me basically to snap out of it- being screwed up from being attacked gave the rapist power. Of course THAT compounded the problem!
How many people carry such secrets and pain?

This kind of thing hurts so so so many, not just the victim. Everyone. I can’t say. I can’t say. I can’t. Just in tears. I saw you and Andrew speak at Burlington, IA. I can only hope such empathetic, kind and courageous people get in office. Thank you for your courage and bravery to speak of this. I just can’t stop crying.
