How come you didn't cut it even lower, say 3-4 feet? New growth can shoot 5-8 ft in one season, so if you're starting at 6ft, you're looking at 11-14ft tall tree by end of the season.
Hi Liz, you can prune a tree at this time of year but it is much more stressful for the tree. Each cut will "bleed" much more sap and you will be cutting away the fruiting limbs that are starting to grow.
nice job with lots of good info, but no, most all common figs popularly found in peoples yards produce twice a year: once off the old wood then later off the new wood...

Cutting branches that close to the trunk invites disease. You should always leave an inch or two so the trunk is protected while it heals.
