Yeah, thanks Kyle. I really appreciate your videos and the effort you put in them. This is a good one. And on a side note, I want to have an old beetle. This thing is just a fancy golf...
I kind of want one of these, the diesel engines are known to be really reliable and there's something really charming about the noise it makes, but sadly they seem to be holding their value far too well for me to be able to afford one anytime in the immediate future. I'll most likely end up with a 2.0, you can find the 1.8 turbo for around the same price but I'm planning on going to college in 2019 and I won't have the money for upkeep on the turbo model if anything goes wrong, whereas the 2.0 models are dirt cheap to fix. Gonna' make sure to get one with a manual too, since the automatic is prone to failure. If I somehow manage to trip over a manual TDI that's been well kept for under $3,000... Well, first I might buy a lottery ticket because that's some insane luck, but also I'd likely buy it on the spot, lol.
Yeah baby, lol. Man I love this car.. I love the colors, TDI, only thing I would want different is for it to be a convertible. I know the TDI engine is not powerful, but the durability and fantastic fuel economy is tops. Thank you Kyle.
Ahh the infamous 1.9 TDI. I have a 1997 Volkswagen Transporter T4 TD which is the non injection version of this engine, I've tweaked the turbo and I think I'm not too far off the BHP of the TDI. These engines with a good tune are good for a hell of a lot above stock without major upgrades.
The beetle engine is about the same size as my 65hp Honda insight engine. The TDI tops-off at 4000rpm but if it could go higher to 6000 like most gasoline cars, it would be 150 hp. It accelerates 0-60 in about 10.5 seconds.
most of the people that bash these cars, forget that despite it's image, it's still a volkswagen, and it drives like one too. it's german through and through. only 90 horsepower? so what? you could have 200 but that doesnt mean you need it in day-to-day driving.
Hey Kyle, I've been meaning to ask for a new in Depth Review of this same model, same year, but with manual transmission. There are some hidden features that this vehicle has, like; the fact the you hold the key on open in the driver's door. It's a little complicated. But I am dying for another in Depth Review for this car, I like the Beetle more than the new Beetle TDI, it's a bit more exciting for some reason. So, please do a review. Thanks Kyle.
I have 2002 one but with manual and cassette which I could consider even more old school than this one even though its newer . Oh, im sorry, is that video from 2010? So im super-duper old school now.
@JeepGCOverland47 Only on idle. Diesels idle on much lover revs than pertrol engines, at about 600 rpm, while petrol engine idle on 1000-1100 rpm. Also, diesels are loud when they're cold, and this is a old fashioned 1.9 TDI "pumpe-duse" diesel engine. New diesels with common rail injection are as smooth as petrol engines and sound better from inside the car in many cases.
I'm an engineer and here's a fact: I average 50 miles per gallon on the highway (back and forth to work). The only other car I've owned that did better was my Insight Hybrid (80mpg) .
I don't deny that. A Beetle can do that because of efficient design in engine and gearing, along with good power to weight ratio, among other things I don't quite understand. I'm just rebutting the previous person's blanket statement about GM V8s. I was only pointing out that engines are not one-size-fits all. Of course a high performance V8 would be lousy for what a Beetle is meant to do. I never argued differently.
I Agree with the 999,999 TH-cam-Likers, Because When I Turn "30-YEARS-OLD" In The Future, I Also Want My Own "2001 VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE CAR" Too, EVERYTH-camR-ON-TH-cam. 👍😃👍
Engineers talk about facts; they don't make trivial, subjective remarks about how "useful" and "interesting" something is. A Beetle is a practical, efficient car underneath that novelty shaped body. The V8 Camaros or Corvettes are performance cars not intended to be a fuel-efficient compact. A Chevy or GMC truck (using V8 LS engines) can do very useful things a Beetle cannot, while a Beetle can do usefuls things a truck cannot.
@bichoorojo somewhere in the range of 110 i would think at least...90 is piss poor..i fart and create more power than those lil diesels make... but they do get tremendous gas mileage ill give them that... i just like diesels more for the power... but i guess thats why i stick to Powerstrokes and Cummins 12v's... not 4 banger diesels...
ok.... how the hell is it possible a modern 4 cyl diesel only makes 90hp and 155 ft lbs of tq? I understand they detuned it cause all car companies do... but good lord...
@fastestlapsDOTcom Well of course it will. I'm only putting down about 130 or so ft/lbs of torque compared to this beetle's 155. That's a noticeable difference. And yes, of course the diesel will get better fuel economy. I'm just saying compared to other newer small coupes, I bet the small amount of horsepower makes it a DOG on the highway. Even my sad little Matrix could probably beat it in a 40-70 accel test.
It is normal. Diesel engines sit comfortably at very low revs compared to petrol engines. If you noticed, when he showed the dashboard, the rev counter went red at 5000 rpm.
@nflfreak4341 and how many HPs did you expect? It s the usual, although the 1.9 TDI grew to 105 in their last moments, later came 2.0 and now the worst of all of them: 1.6 TDI with "105" hp and less torque. The VW-Audis dielsel engines 4 cyl go to 105-140-170 hp I have a Peugeot 406 1.9 TD of 1996 with 90 hp :D
Im a guy but in all honesty this is literally my dream first car in this color idgaf what yall gonna say this is hella cool
Same! I’m trying to find a yellow one but they are damn near impossible to find.
20 years from now. These things will be valuable
I have one now! A red one...
I love Volkswagen Beetle they're my favorite I wish I had a car like that
The tail light surrounds are awesome! :) This bubble bug is so cute :)
Loved it. Makes me want a little diesel Beetle badly.
If I could find one of these for $3000 or less it'd be great fun
04 bettle 155 k diesel 3800$
Yeah, thanks Kyle. I really appreciate your videos and the effort you put in them.
This is a good one.
And on a side note, I want to have an old beetle. This thing is just a fancy golf...
I am 8, I am obsessed with both Cars & School Buses. But,Man, It is Yellow, My favorite color. It is a very pretty Beetle. Love It.
It's crazy this car has been around since 1998 basically unchanged, I read somewhere that they finally have a redesign for it.
Yeah its true they have redesigned it released in 2014 and its quite costly
Like it. Reminds me a lot of the 2001 VW Jetta TDI we had a while back.
It is so adorable for a car of its time.
Same 2001 I have same color cute and beautiful car all are watching me so happy for this german car beetle
These cars are very fun to drive!

Great video as always Kyle! My favorite color and it's also a TDI! Schweet!
I love my 99 beetle tdi! Except it’s a manual and it doesn’t have leather. And it’s a five speed manual. I’m almost at 250,000 miles. These cars last.
I have the 05 version. I only watched this to see if the engine sounds really loud like mine.
i have manual one 1.9 turbo diesel also and just always been the apple of my eye since i was 7 i wanted one tho *.*
I have a manual 1.9 as well! It’s a 1999. Almost 250k on it. These little cars are so awesome
Boring? Not with a stick shift. Primitive? It gets 50 miles per gallon. Useless? It moves me to and from work. What more is needed?
thanks for sharing
I had to watch a Barbie ad before this video and could not skip it :(
Thanks
Matches the car.

What a fantastic little car, this is why German cars are so loved.
Thank you Kyle .
Thank you appreciate it such a cute ride... I just bought one!
Eric Sparks that thing looks so adorable 😍 right dude 😍🤩👍🏻I want one so badly too
So cute I wanna get one in this color

i love how these cars sound! my grandparents had 3 of them and i wish they would buy me one.
i want 1 sooo badly....
@TheWarmplate I have. Are you trying to make a point about torque versus horsepower?
The beetle engine is about the same size as my 65hp Honda insight engine. The TDI tops-off at 4000rpm but if it could go higher to 6000 like most gasoline cars, it would be 150 hp. It accelerates 0-60 in about 10.5 seconds.

My best friend's dad has this engine in his 2006 Jetta TDI. Nice engine, gets 42+ MPG on the highway supposedly (:
@Airr91 He lives in North Carolina I think.
I wish I had that vw beetle

@Maserati7200 haha no the original beetles were rear engined. All of the New Beetles have front engines
@seyon b Yeah, they are happy cars, aren't they.

Are Volkswagens good for traveling?
Gogo_Rules Yeah they're pretty good cars, just don't have a ton of trunk space.

@talldude123 TDI stands for 'Turbocharged Direct Injection'.
every time u get into a car makes me think to grand thef auto cuz every time u get on it and turn it on the music comes on like GTA lolz!!!!
@orbitofdoom16 It wasn't really an insult, it's just that North American cars tend to have big engines...
Yes they have turbo :) Volkswagen was putting turbo's in 97 VW golf Mk 3
@04smallmj Not anymore, that is if you consider a 1.4 Liter Turbo I4 a big engine.

someday you could do another video of the beetle of this year
@raulecalderon No , its turbocharched direct injection.
my dad has one its a 2006 and it get 46 mpg!!!! its red. Its only use is highway driving.
Not a lot of miles for diesel still has plenty of life left.
But those door panels inside look like a joke.
is that ur white Hyundai ?
wooot.
is there not a button thingy besides drivers seat toopen the....trunk
is this car good for a high school student?
I wonder how hard it would be to convert to fry oil?
Is the engine sound ‘da da da da...’ normal for the diesel engine? Sounds loud...
+WESTEVER77 That's not a normal sound. But then again this is a second hand car and that poor ALH engine has obviously seen better days.
It is normal. Diesel engines sit comfortably at very low revs compared to petrol engines. If you noticed, when he showed the dashboard, the rev counter went red at 5000 rpm.
Even with 155 lb/ft of torque I bet this thing SUCKS with 90 ponies under the hood.
How much would one of these cost???? I want one!
How much did this sell for?
haha this car got even more feminine when you pulled out the "accessory taillight surrounds"

@cypv12 Eventually oil will become too expensive and all internal combustion engines will be diesel. Get used to it.
@fastestlapsDOTcom sure. but from a users stand point it becomes a problem when a car struggles to pass a car going 45 mph. 90 hp is a joke.
90 horsepower... what..
@officalcarguy Because of the low end torque I guess.
@nflfreak4341 and how many HPs did you expect? It s the usual, although the 1.9 TDI grew to 105 in their last moments, later came 2.0 and now the worst of all of them: 1.6 TDI with "105" hp and less torque. The VW-Audis dielsel engines 4 cyl go to 105-140-170 hp
