Put up your dukes as its time to run around beating up some gangs, welcome to the 8BS Revamp for the legendary River City Ransom! An iconic game in so many ways, with the soundtrack being some of the most fine crafted music on the console, all thanks to Kazuo Sawa in what is most certainly his most well known and beloved soundtrack. Every tune is just magical and is the epitome of that Technos Japan charm the company had down at this point, which is also thanks to Michiya Hirasawa for creating one of the most iconic soundfonts with his Sound Driver, these songs never get out! Even right from the beginning you get hit with some jams, which leads into one of the most well known tracks from this entire series, "Fighting The Gangs", literally the pinnacle of perfect game themes as you go around beating people up, along with "Menu / Shop" which is just as iconic of a theme, quite possible the best Shop theme on the entire console. Then you have all the amazing Boss Fight themes, again with "A Tough Fight" being another well known track from the game, the energy on these tracks are incredible and help make this game even more memorable. We do get some softer tracks like "Password / Park" and "Melody of Love" but for the most part this game bring the energy, even to the various Unused Themes that are present in the code of the game, all that were meant for specific instances but seems Technos either ran out of time or space to put them into the game, but thankfully are still here to be enjoyed as proper last tracks to this OST. RCR is among one of the most well known and praised NES games, for its quirkiness, fun dialogue, engaging battle system, and of course the sprite work which can be seen as one of the most used and well known sprite work for the NES, these 8Bit character sprites are absolutely timeless with how many unique animations there are to these goofy Kunio Kun characters. While not the first Kunio Kun game that we got localized for North America, it remains the most praised and beloved and for good reason, there was nothing else quite like a beat'em up game with open world elements, and is still fun to this day, play it if you haven't! The factory theme is in my head because I couldn't jump well. The boss theme is too damn catchy (and you can grind on boss fights for lots of cash.) I love how each boss has a different personality. There's so much charm in this game that survived the localization process, and it's still about high school delinquents. Too many hours spent on this absolute gem grinding for cash or pummeling bosses or getting hype at fighting the totally not Lee Brothers while the Double Dragon theme plays.
And certain gangs would drop more cash than others, and they were some of the hardest ones to defeat. Just such a fun game with high replay ability and a catchy OST to boot? Good times...
