So interesting, a lesson in geology and local history

Amazing place. I encourage everyone to go check it out. Looks brilliant when big seas are happening as well.

Thanks ABC. Just an aside it's "Celsius" in Oz, not "Centigrade". I'm a research scientist, with a PhD in Applied Physics and I've never utilised the term Centigrade - geologists might, but haven't heard that until now.

The word ‘centigrade’ is a common enough term here. Always utilised when us slightly older Aussies were navigating the changeover from the days of Fahrenheit. The weather reports would be given in both Fahrenheit and Centigrade.

I wonder whether the shaping via cooling has any relation to honeycomb (which bees actually make as rounded cylinders, which become cramped until the regular honeycomb structure is formed) or to bubbles that are stuck together by surface tension?

It is to do with packing efficiency, nature is very good at figuring out the most efficient way to do anything, the same reason all large gravitational masses are spheres, it's the most efficient shape in relation to surface area/volume hence it requires the lowest amount of energy to maintain its shape. The hexagonal stacking is the most efficient way for the basalt to cool and occupy the least amount of space given the conditions.

Hi if you get satellite map of Australia on your phone or computer screen and then turn satellite map of Australia upside down then look far right near coastal township of Karratha western Australia and then look closely with your 👁️👁️ s just above Karratha and zoom in up and down and focus very clearly and you'll see two huge eyes on head with a huge bird beak type snout with wings spanning across continent and tail feathers ending up near Adelaide South Australia. Check out all of the dark red ocher section in middle of continent. A giant flying winged Phoenix type of creature spanning across two thirds of the nation and seems to be flying over and taking out dragon corner ( NSW, SA,Victoria border) WOW amazing incredible gotta check this out and be extremely blessed and amazed. Remember to turn satellite map of Australia upside down to view correctly. Good luck and enjoy. You'll love it. 👍🤠🇦🇺🦅🐉🌏👀

Seems like climate change was always around to create these wonders.
