How Shoplifting Epidemic Is Changing Grocery Stores

  • Nationwide, shoplifting at supermarkets is out of control and it's creating a whole new experience in the way people shop for basic everyday items. Products people would normally grab and put in their cart are now under lock and key. Some supermarket chains are reporting an estimated 30% rise in shoplifting. One grocery store in New York has signs alerting customers to please contact a manager or an employee to purchase certain items.

In order to prosecute shoplifters, the store must first apprehend them. That means spending money on loss prevention agents, including spending a large part of the court on the case. They may only be prosecuted for a misdemeanor, not a felony depending on state law. Some retailers find it cheaper not to prosecute and take the loss.

All he knew to do was landscape and he was battling skin cancer anytime he worked outside and my mom had some pretty bad mental health issues and brain damage from an attempted suicide. It was brutal. I eventually got custody of my sister and when the state provided us with WIC, we had to meet him in court and he was put on child support he couldn’t pay. He just got so sick and tired of the store being robbed. The cops told him to not do it again, but thanked him. What’s even scarier is in the city near me there was these couple of criminals who were rolling in bread trays & having expired bread on top & putting it on the shelves & walking out & stealing 4-6 full trays of fresh bread & Entenmann’s cakes at a time (around 40-60 pieces) & they were turning around & selling it for full commission in these mom & pop places. Our bread guys make 18%-20% off what they sell in stores but the individuals who were shoplifting didn’t own bread routes & were getting 100% commission off the stolen product when they took it mom & pop places & a few restaurants. They would ring it up as a grocery item & type in the price is how they kept getting away with it. Mom & pop places assumed it was a regular bread guy as well. They probably stole over $15,000-$25,000 worth of product over a 2-3 year span.
The grocery stores mangers wouldn’t release store footage because they don’t want vendors knowing their camera placement, so the bread guys ended up to having to file police reports to get them busted. It’s sad really they said one bread guy was literally losing his mind over it because he knew it kept going on but no one would stop it

We had a Chinese lady who goes in the back and takes a whatever she wanted in the grocery store I worked part-time. The sad part was I worked with her son on my full-time job. Her husband owned a garage shop and was the sweetest man ever. The store never called the police on her because she was known to do this. You couldn't pry the object out of her hand. We would call the son or husband to come get her. They always apologized and were so embarrassed. The most stubborn little lady I ever met in my life!! But yes, we had Asian shoplifters at my store. I ALWAYs found reasons to avoid shopping with her. 2 years went by and I had moved and received a letter that said I was right. She then described the minor nightmare she went through for her criminal behavior not just police and tickets and the general fallout. Her mother and step father......whooooo. That sucked. My adult daughter got caught around 12 for trying it. I made her work off the ticket and deal with the shame of it all but also made her do a research paper on what ahoplifting does to everyone else. So highlight how expensive all that shoplifting is to consumers annually. The stores only stay in business if they can make up those product losses somehow.

This is why I order everything online after a trip to Walgreens and Wal-Mart. I felt so bad for the employees, they would have to leave the cashier counter or stop stocking just to unlock something for me and unfortunately everything on my shopping list was locked up! I was so annoyed and so were the employees.

Everything is an epidemic these days. Wish we could go back to the times when a shop owner could leave his shop unattended and trust that people leave their money in the box on the table for whatever they take. Places like those still exist, but America continues to prove every day that we can't even trust our own neighbors and communities.
Tldr version is: This is why we can't have nice things.

Thing is, I cant be sure if its all teams of ppl trying to re-sell online or craigslist, or if its also desperate people who really cant afford $5 for toothpaste. $100 used to be a weeks worth of groceries and necessities. Now $100 gets you 2, maybe 3 days of groceries. Least where I live (your experience may vary). Moneys getting tight and yeah ive definitely thought about just taking that allergy medication over needing to put back fixings for dinner.

Retail employee here. We're not able to stop shoplifters (in my store we can't). We can't call them out. We can't deny service. They basically tell us "it is what it is. just continue to give them good service ig". I understand why we shouldn't intervene. You never know what can happen (it can escalate into violence).

I’m not from the US and honestly, this sounds crazy. I know that the customer service is all about being friendly and helpful, but why shouldn’t employees intervene? In some cases even a slight comment along the lines of “please don’t forget to pay the items you just put in your bag :)” would be enough to stop someone. There should obviously still be other security measures but on the lowest level this would still help
