  • In this lesson I teach you the classic William Hart / Thom Bell song the way I play it and the way to me that works for me. Let me know what you think.
Also there is a bonus lesson, as requested, how to play Hey Love. I felt it wasn't extensive enough to require a full video but I hope this lesson gives you all you will need to play it.

William Hart just passed July 14th 2022. May he rest in power. As a guitarist I'm highly appreciative of your lesson AND bonus lesson.
Much thanks and gratitude to you! 🎸

It's funny, Dave - I was introduced to this song from the sound track of the Quentin Tarantino movie "Jackie Brown". The chord work that goes into that song is definitely more involved and I really like the way you broke it down. Great lesson Dave!

Hi Dave. Another fantastic job with a classic R&B hit. You have a good mixture of old school R&B and classic rock (my era). Definitely one to impress family and friends. Thanks so much. Waiting for a Luther Vandross tune to strike a nerve?

Luther eh? How about Because it's Really Love? I always loved that on the Give Me The Reason record.

Was that a keyboard mind that developed this progression? You just don't hear these kind of jazz progressions in pop music from the guitar crowd these days.

Well he was a piano player but generally I think anybody who has a grasp of chord theory and a musical understanding can come up with these chords. Jeff Lynne for instance. I don't think the chords here are two difficult. The G#dim7 comes into play because its basically the same a C#7b9 but with a G# in the bass instead of a C#. When listening I had to determine if it actually was a C#7b9 but the bass player played a G# but I figured it sounded best this way. These days, no pop music has any chords with pretty extensions. Its all triads and terrible lyrics. Ahh the good ole days.

@@DavesGuitarChannel I can think of a guitar player that strings together those kind of chord progressions and I'm sure you have heard of him. Here's an example of his work: th-cam.com/video/P97m0r9r8Qk/w-d-xo.html Enjoy.

i allways wonder how people know all these chords and how they go together when wriiting a song like this

I have some lessons on theory on my channel you might want to take a look at. Thom Bell was a classically trained musician and really had a great sense for placing chords. I will be doing some lessons in the future demonstrating chord building and the like.
