    🕵️‍♂️ WHO AM I?:
    My name is Matt Estlea, I'm a 27 year old Woodworker from Basingstoke in England and my aim is to make your woodworking less s***.
    I come from 5 years tuition at Rycotewood Furniture Centre with a further 1 year working as an Artist in Residence at the Sylva Foundation, which is where I began growing my business. I then returned to Rycotewood to teach Evening Classes for 2 Years, while also teaching City and Guilds Furniture Making for 3 years. They were some long 12 hour days!
    In September, 2021. I resigned from teaching at the school to focus on my own business.
    In addition to all that studying and teaching during the week, I occupied my weekends working at Axminster Tools and Machinery in Basingstoke. For 5 years, I helped customers with purchasing tools, demonstrated in stores and events, and gained extensive knowledge about a variety of tools and brands. I discontinued this job role in 2019 to focus on teaching at Rycotewood and my own business.

    Just love this extended cut, if only TH-cam would award videos like this with more exposure, that whole dialogue sequence adds so much value to the project in terms of problem solving in real life - looking forward to version 2 :)

    The optimal design for an all wooden nerf gun would be a crossbow right? 😂 Loved the videos though mate, we’ve all had these moments from time to time.

    Maybe, steam bending the parts next time, would be interesting, maybe layering some 3mm sheets of it and steam-bend them before glueing, that should yield some pretty hefty results. German woodworker and bow-enthusiast here. Nice try though.
    Edit: note to myself, watch till the end before commenting.

    So this is not the video that proves my point, and I hardly ever sub to any channel, but, the information you give is technically very accurate and is the best i found on all youtube to learn techniques, knowledge and even almost about the physics of woodworking, i love that ! Good work ;)

    Wouldn't it make more sense to have the main firing rod be straight and then the fins out like a fishbone rather than firing rod being all squiggly?

  • @hellomate639
    @hellomate639 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Damn dude. next time I'd build it with screws until it works, then replace the screws with dowel pins... lol.
    As for woods to use, you could use something that has just seriously high strength and toughness, two separate but related mechanical properties.
    Katalox is one of my favorites, but I live in the USA, not too far from Mexico.

    I don't think you need as many ribs with yew as you do with plastic. And maybe use straight ribs that bow back. Like a reverse bow 🏹 ... Instead of the angles. I think it can be done if you work to how wood works vs plastic in the mark rober version

  • @VAXHeadroom
    @VAXHeadroom 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    It's pivoting on the last ribs and that created a rotational tension on the bit that broke. I think the trigger to firing pin should be a straight piece and there should be ribs on both top and bottom. But one end of the ribs should be free so the change in length when it flexes won't create a pivot point.
    Nice set of vids; earned my sub on both channels.

    Could you not adjust the plans so that there's one rod which the "spring" struts are glued into? There might be something I'm missing but you could align the barrel with the cocking piece and just have one rod which pulls straight back and avoid the zig zaggy design which introduces weak points.

  • @tom314
    @tom314 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Disappointed I was correct with my guess! If you can measure the force on the last surviving section then you'll know how much load to apply to the new prototyped piece to see whether it'll survive. For the replacement piece, you could go with epoxy impregnated, especially if you go for something which isn't very dense then it'll mostly be epoxy. Or, maybe look for one of the woods with the highest modulus of rupture?

    Just a thought : instead of making plywood with grain going 90° to each layer, why not try 45° or 60° to reduce the amount of short grain?

    could you have done the large awkward section in plywood and just connected the "springs" to it instead of doing the more complex thing you did? id presume it would be stronger then this designs iteration at least

  • @brucematthews6417
    @brucematthews6417 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Ummmm.... what if the "bolt" were just a single long piece of wood at the top and the ribs on that angle extend to the base? Yeah, the bolt would arch up and over a touch because of the way the ribs bend. But because of the way then "S" curve due to being fixed maybe not enough to matter? Or since the arc up and over would be so slight it can just be ignored? It sure didn't help that as the ribs extended in an arc that there was a force trying to flex the upper parts of your zig-zag bolt up and the lower part down, That likely added to the stress on the bridal joints. A single straight bolt along the upper line with all the ribs slanted the same as the front and rear sets would avoid that vertical stretching stress

    It's beautiful work. But you are copying a design that isn't designed for wood.
    The bar that holds all the force shouldn't be bent or jointed when it's built in a material with grain like wood.
    I'm imagining a version with a strait pull shaft like an arrow on a bow, with the springs extending either side.
    The power would be higher if the spring pieces could be straight through the pull section.
    Another consideration is that as the springs bend they will change in length, if you mount them into the Frame solidly, they balance of compression and tension will be forced off.
    Hmm
    I bet if you did it a certain way you could even make the Springwood pieces replaceable if the break.
    I might have to have a Crack at this
