  • In this video I am sharing my Dendrobium anosmum (alba species) orchid. I received it this time last year and it is probably a success story that it is even still alive! After minimal (very minimal) growth this season, I am contemplating my strategy for its winter rest.

    I came across your video tonight. I got two of these orchids shipped from Hawaii in early spring 2021 when they were still in bloom. When the flowers fell off, new canes started to emerge from the center crown of both plants, two on each one. I used granular fertilizer and watered regularly but the canes never grew as long as the ones from the previous year. They averaged about 12" to 16", compared to about 22" on the ones that arrived blooming. I obviously messed up in their care because the canes never dropped their leaves and sent out blooms. I thought maybe the unheated room was too cold, but others think I overwatered during the dormancy period. I admit, it was very hard to gauge when I should have slowed down, and for how long. The four canes are still the same length with green leaves, but the old canes that bloomed last year have sent out 18 keikis. I'm not sure if the canes that never dropped their leaves this year will do that next winter or not. I was curious if you got any flowers this past spring.

      Thanks for your comment and for watching...I did not get blooms or keikis and I don’t know why. Just bare canes doing nothing. Watch an updated video on my winter resting Dendrobiums here: th-cam.com/video/Xdi__Un6_cY/w-d-xo.html

    I have this plant in purple. It really does smell like raspberries. I’ve only had it for 8 months but a friend gave it to me in bloom and the canes have developed beautiful leaves. I’ll cut back on watering now that fall is here but I live in Hawaii, so it gets moisture from humidity. I’m curious to see how it blooms in spring - my friend said it will bloom in March. I hang mine in northern light like you do and it’s very happy with that. Thanks for your video - I learned some new fun facts. 😊

    I have the same it doesn't grow much more. It gives me keikis all the time. I separate the keikis and planted them alone. They are doing better. But no flowers yet.
    Thanks for sharing

    I attached an anosmum on a coconut husk and mounted on my mango 4 years ago. last year it bloomed for the 2nd time. This cane was about 30" and it bloomed beautifully. They bloom around August sept here. So i'm expecting another series of blooms this year. No fertilizer.

      Do you mind sharing where you live/what your climate is like? Mine may not be mature enough to bloom…. I’m not able to permanently mount outdoors because winters here can be below freezing. I only got keikis this past spring. Thanks for sharing your experience.

      @@TheOrchidHut I live in American Samoa. It rains frequently here. The Honohono thrives well here. Many orchid do also. I have them all outside in pots or on trees. It’s our “winter” now. That is rain, windy and slight temp drop from 90s to 80s. I move my pots under my eaves. My vandas are mounted on fern trunks. I have to be careful with the medium I have in the pots as it rains constantly. Bark, volcanic rock and charcoal. I began my orchids in 2018, so it’s work in progress. Very enjoying part of my life. You take care

    I have a plant for over several months now. It's scraggily and pathetic. I spent my time trying to encourage it's survival. It has produced several keikis since purchase which I must admit have thicker healthier canes.
    The leaves are yellowing for mine as I have tried to produce the conditions for winter rest. The are also signs of flower buds developing.
    I feel just a little better seeing my plant now but honestly, I don't like the appearance. It's a wee plant with thin canes: it looked like a delicate seedling.

      I am still not happy with the appearance of my plant, either. I am trying a different approach this winter because what I did last year for winter rest did not produce blooms…. I’m ALMOST convinced this orchid may be impossible for me to grow successfully - esp. if it never blooms. Thanks for sharing your experience and for watching!

    Check out Sam's orchids on YT channel. Lots of other growers of this dendrobium are on YT so maybe they will give you some useful advice.
    Sam has good info on 🌱reporting + answer why canes grow keiki instead flowers. Good luck.🤗

    Hi there! I purchased a purple cutting last year it had 2 old canes about 2 feet long and 2 new canes and lots of bright lite no blooms last spring this summer I have a total of 3 new canes the longest is about 4 feet long the next is 3 and then 2 , I didn’t know about winter rest so I hope this year I have better luck lol and I herd Kikis produce when they have too much water during the resting period what’s your thoughts ? I am in central Florida so I’m trying to find somebody to watch that has orchids in central Florida lol

    • @TheOrchidHut
      @TheOrchidHut  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Central Florida is a very similar climate to where I am in East Texas. So, we should share growing notes, for sure! I am letting this Dendrobium have night temps. down to 50 degrees F. No more fertilizer and only a trickle of water about once a week.

      @@TheOrchidHut what do you think about no water unless the canes get to shriveled then just a mist or a quick run through And still very bright lite
