I love that beat also. Like Kevin said, "it's generic but not bad". It is the perfect beat to dance along, and that's what a song needs to be listened to in parties and disco places. I think the goal in this one was to take K music to the biggest ammount of people who are non K-poppers (as usual, SJ breaking barriers), and it was the perfect rhythm to achieve that♡
I think that they have to consider that this song (and almost every Latin song) is made to be at a party and people dancing to it, so that’s why it has to be a little “generic” because people is not going to dance to a really complex song that would make a classical musician crazy about it xD
I think that there are other genres of latin music that aren't that generic like salsa or rumba and they also make you want to dance
The reggaeton beat is a generic Puerto Rican background. As a Puerto Rican I know this to be true. This is not salsa or anyting this is reggaeton lol.

I don't know if they can distinguish the difference between salsa and reggaeton, since lo siento is on the later rather than the first one, specially if they look at Latin music from the classical viewpoint. Yes, salsa, reggaeton and bachata can have similar base but they can have a distance between them. (I'm saying all of this from my Latina perspective and my little classical music school knowledge since I studied in close by a music faculty and some of my friends are classically trained)
cursed3artemis: I've been on Umu more recently about their lack of knowledge about "Latin"/"Afro-Carib-Latin" styles mostly in terms of rhythm since I think it is the foundation of almost all of these styles. And in general the reactors don't talk about rhythms as much. (I gave them a 30% accuracy rate in guessing "A/C/L" styles, lol!) I did send her a couple of tutorials about Salsa via her Patreon account since she asked for guidance from me. And I have to add that were just the basics of Salsa and nothing else about the huge number of other styles!

YES!!!! The "dum da-dum da-dum" sequence Kevin talked about is the basic rhythm for reggaeton music, and while it's not surprising to me that people from outside latin america are shocked this song and the blending of styles worked... the reggaeton thing is present in soooooo many kpop songs, and very popular ones at that (blood sweat and tears, anyone?)
hannahthecritter: Hi, not to give you a hard time, but that is kind of broad request. There are dozens of different styles. So if you are not very musically inclined, I would suggest you just you-tube search for a Latin dance tutorial for each style, Salsa, Samba, Bossa Nova etc... Some of them break down the music pretty well rhythmically and then often end the video with "full-on" band arrangement clips. Here is the very, very basic one I send Umu: th-cam.com/video/q5FOwr-jDwQ/w-d-xo.html Sometimes you can find a Latin percussionist that is a dance teacher those can be really good since the rhythms that they illustrate by playing a drum,etc... are the most important part of the different styles, imo.
While you're exploring those the displayed suggestion will show musician tutorials. Ignore the rest of this if you're not interested "as a musician".
I sent her a rhythm section one for Salsa too, but since she removed the reaction post on her patreon account and I didn't "save it" I can't list that one for you Also this is really for percussionists/drummers and has no melody; instruments/singers "playing" the song.
So believe it or not that second video I send to Umu showed 4 difference rhythm instruments and all of them were playing "different named-rhythms. Clave, Tumbao, and Martillo for the "Salsa-sound". I forgot the fourth and the spellings maybe off. At the moment I am very tired The 4th was Cascara. One can play other rhythms but these four are very common in Salsa and they can be played in almost endless combinations and variations/levels of complexity.
I played in a mostly Salsa "Latin" band for about a year primarily as a trumpet player and the simpler percussion(rhythm) instruments. I had a decent but modest jazz and classical background. And although I was exposed to most of the more common Afro/Carib/Latin styles. I could only play half of them in a confident basic level and half of those at a "good level". So It takes a lot of effort to learn these "A/C/L" styles. At least for me...Lol!
welldressedpunks yesssss my mum is a dance teacher (we’re both from Cuba) and she teaches traditional Afro-Cuban. I remember showing her Kpop videos where I asked why I heard familiar beats in certain songs (I grew up around her work) and she explained it for me especially in blood sweat and tears where it’s less subtle. Instruments aside it’s very easy for Kpop writers to incorporate ‘latin’ rhythm into songs as well as smart to make them catchier and want listeners to dance/ remember choreo

First time I don't completely agree with Kevin's and the other guy's opinion :/ I think this song is really unique, maybe within the song there are not many impacting changes but the intro, the transition to the chorus and the ending are great

Kevin: That "latin pop" beat you mention it's the base of reggaeton. Pretty much all reggaeton songs have that beat (it is a little bit annoying), but not all of the latin pop songs have it, it's just a characteristic of that genre

heck the collabed with actual ppl from this genre for this very reason!
It's not meant to be a profound piece full of taking great risks (the collab itself is new enough as an intro to the market)... it's mean to appeal to the Latin Fans... and it server it's purpose and met it's goal on SOOO many different levels!
Maybe the new collab coming would try diff beats (we'll see soon)!

Latin pop nowadays has borrowed a lot from reggaeton ever since the genre was known as such (there has been "reggaeton" as early as the 90s but it wasn't called that way). That's where the repetitive-sounding drum comes from.
I personally would suggest Kevin to listen to latin pop from the late 90s and early 00s, as it has more variety to it. Some names are Bacilos, Carlos Vives, Café Tacvba and Shakira - which by far was the most experimental in the mainstream back then.
Anyways, I love your videos and it's crazy the huge amount of insight offered by such nice and educated people. Keep it up!

This was a VERY awaited song reaction. First ever to reach Billboard Latin Charts, first k-pop collab to win Kids Choice Awards in México, people love it. I live in Peru and I listen to it walking down the streets (in stores, car wash, etc) xddd
Nobody would have thought that korean and spanish could blend so well, but Super Junior did it, because that's what they usually do, they take things nobody has done before, and take the risk. Music is a mix of rhythm, melody, voices and lyrics, and I love how this collab did that and also started changing people's mind about integration between cultures that are SO different. No europe, no north america, but latin america. And they sing TOGETHER with Leslie, not just for some seconds, this felt like something done by a team♡ Thanks for the reaction. Although I un-subscribed of this channel because I had to wait like... I fuck with it, I appreciate what they did as opposed to what American/Latin crossovers tend to do. Like Leslie had a part throughout the entire song instead of just the 3rd verse. To me it didn’t feel like a cash grab but instead it felt like they really worked to blend the two cultures into one song.

Just because its generic doesn't mean it's a gimmick ! They are not the only group who have a spanish influenced song but they are the only group who succeeded in making it Spanish fusion instead of Spanish Influenced. Listen to it again and this time alone so that you have nobody around you to spread your heavenly knowledge to. Just listen to the song and reevaluate whether it is a gimmick or not.

I believe that both languages blend so well because as someone who speaks English and Spanish fluently and have been hearing Korean since childhood, I have noticed that Korean and Spanish have very similar pronunciation, unlike English and Korean. If you listen to someone speak in Korean with and English/American English accent versus a Spanish accent, Spanish sounds more natural.

i love kevin and i like isaac but i feel like they just don't know that much about latin music to speak about it. what they consider "generic" would be traditional in the latin perspective, and salsa and reggaeton are actually quite different. maybe this sounded like a salsa rhythm to them but it was definitely more of an underlying reggaeton vibe, if anything.
i'm not latina myself, but i have studied quite a bit on world music with some focus on analyzing latin american music, so even though my knowledge on the subject isn't deep, it's still enough for me to hold some weight in a conversation on the topic. this is the first time i disagree with kevin (not the first with isaac but the first time i was actually bothered by what i consider to be an uninformed opinion) and think that they completely missed the point of the song, because i don't think anyone - except them - sees the song as "gimmicky"... and all because play-n-skillz utilized tropes that are often heard throughout latin pop music to establish a bridge and make the two wildly different genres meld together better.
this song is nothing short of a crosscultural masterpiece, and it was executed extremely well. were play-n-skillz to incorporate more complicated rhythms or sounds that may be more musically interesting but less distinctive and significantly used/heard in latin pop, "lo siento" would not be as iconic or well-loved as it is now. that, and you might not be able to even identify that this kpop song was fused with latin pop if play-n-skillz didn't use the quintessential beats and sounds that makes latin pop music so easily identifiable or easy on the ears for everybody.
kevin and isaac were quite ignorant towards latin music culture and it bothers me a lot that kevin still holds this opinion even after his first reaction with umu, which was already a bit of a misinformed trainwreck. this is the first time that kpop has had such a genuine collaboration across two different genres and cultures, and had a song true to both genres' sounds. that they can't see how "lo siento" is on a whole other level and is definitely a step up from all the other latin pop-_inspired_ kpop songs is disappointing, to say the least.
ishipthatfishycouple: I've been on Umu and Kevin for a while about their lack of knowledge of "Latin" or "Afro/Carib/Latin" music. Just recently I restated my suggestion (since they are all back in school and starting their 3rd season) that they use "Latin" or "A/C/L" style as a catch all since their knowledge is so dismal. Keep on mind I have also watched ~80% of their unedited reactions...I know sounds a bit obsessive or maybe pathetic. HaHa!
Following my last complaint on her patreon posting of "Lo Siento" Umu did ask for tutorials, etc.. on "Latin rhythms", from me for her and the reactors. I was on her about the rhythms since I believe the rhythms are the most important variant in the difference styles and is the basis (well at least 50%) for "A/C/L" styles of music...Lol If she really was asking about "all Latin rhythms" since there are just as many as classical music styles. Assuming she was asking about Salsa only I did send her a couple of rhythmically based tutorials.
I'm hardly an expert but I did play in a "Latin" band that played mostly Salsa for almost a year. I also played jazz, classical, R&B and Kelzmer and was at a conservatory as a kid for 1 school year. So I have a varied experience and I worked and or traveled in 3/4 of the Caribbean islands and about half of the Latin and south American countries. I actually disagree with a lot of your statements but not with your opinion about K&I!
bob ansak that's cool and good to know! i'm no expert myself either, what i've been saying here has been mostly based off of the things i've been learning in class so i couldn't say that i know a lot more than they do. perhaps i'm off the mark about some of the things i believe to be true based on what i was taught, so please feel free to correct me if i did make some inaccurate statements

So I disagree with a lot of your opinions about what Lo Siento "is and is not" but it's mostly based on our different subjective opinions so there is nothing to "correct" you about. If you want we discuss the differences I like debating and studied science and philosophy in college so I rely on stats and probability concepts as well as real logic based discussion when supporting my conclusions. I tend to express myself in very direct terms and I am very opinionated so it can come off as arrogant,etc... but I really don't take things like this seriously.
bob ansak ah, i see, i thought what you disagreed with were the things i learned about latin music. it's fair and completely fine that you disagree with what i said, i merely said those things based on my own opinion and appreciation of the collaboration so i don't expect everyone to concur.
Other than your comment about Reggaeton and Salsa in the first paragraph you said virtual nothing about Latin music. iImean in the sense you were talking about L-pop which takes influence from Latin rhythms,etc but rarely adapts anything in beats, form, etc,,, in "true" or significant ways.

Why they say latin pop instead of regaeton? Thats not latin pop, latin pop is belinda, arjona, reik, morat, jesse y joy.....kinda bothers me and thats how regaeton works its repetitive as hell thats why many of us (latino) hate it, its not gimycky thats how real regaeton sounds its not meant to be profound or challenging but to make you dance just look at the reactors how wanted to dance and felt the "mood", trust me i've listened for 10 years or so

Hey, guys! Your video reactions are not only entertaining but also represents your professional point of view as opera singers. You don't leave aside pop music and that's pretty comprehensive considering your age. Probably, you know there is a trend in music called "neoclassic", (a combination of classical and pop music) which undoubtedly will be developing and I believe has bright future. Kpop is awesome, of course. It's at the top of the interests of young people, but I have been watching decrease of interest to this kind of music. Believe me, I work with young people and can monitor the music interests for the last 3 years. What if you look at representative of neoclassic Dimash Kudaibergen, the rising star at the world stage? He has been trained as an opera singer (even was invited to on opers theatre), but he sings pop music being incredibly successful. 6 octaves (up to whisle), 4 tones! I bet none of you ever listened anything like that! He is also called the 8th wonder of the world. I guess it would be interesting for opera students, for your future profession (wherever you work in the music industry).
