Chris A Check out the dance scene in the film. Better backing and his rendition on it is riveting For the censored fifties that scene was borderline erotic
Oh my now I really want to see Houseboat. I love Sam Cooke, my ex looks just like him. Sam was so fine and his voice was so soulful. Kisses and be blessed. God is so good.
If I had ten minutes to live this is the song I want to die hearing. Its an amazingly beautiful song that makes you feel like if you were floating to heaven.
Still here 2018! I would love to have grown up with poodle skirts dancing a summer night to this song. Having a man ,hold you and dance the way they danced in Houseboat. No grinding-the taking your time.Having him lead you, with slightest of touch to your back !
I grew up listening to this man and his wonderful voice! God bless his soul!!! This was just a clincher for the movie with Cary's good looking self and pretty Sophia.
His voice and their actual love affair make that scene one of the the hottest love scenes with two fully clothed vertical stars in movie history - but it had to be Sam
Many times I nearly pulled a trigger of $75-$100+ on LP compilations of his to get this song presuming that RCA wld not release a single version of any film song w much less orchestration & backing than film versions as most labels did having finally found both record versions of this so glad I didn't buy then. Breaks my heart no official record release of film version or at least studio follow up with full orchestra. Perf example of a song that strings lift from mediocrity to magnificence. 4 me it's not even the same song. Too rushed & plinky orchestration of mere combo ruins it. Sadly he wasn't yet signed to RCA & Paramount/DOT records was not allowed to use his voice on soundtracks due to his label's contract, a common issue w/ movie singers & soundtrack releases.
thanks for touching base , i had a similar experience with the song from cane mutiny ( i can't believe that you're in love with me ) after some research i discovered it was a very rare soundtrack , and was done by a ghost singer named jo ann greer , who never got her just due , but like the song from houseboat , i'am reduced to listening from the movie clip .
Daniel Forte I have always said that scene is virtually erotic. Watch Cary Grant's looking at her & realize at the time he was pleading in real life with Sophia to not marry Ponti but him. In her memoirs she said she was so in love with him but was conflicted, in love with both & only choosing to not marry Grant for the realization that to marry an actor would not make her happy. He is to me helped by the sensuality of that rendition of this song practically f$!#ing her with his eyes. RE: Jo Ann Greer, she ghosted for many actresses. You can look up all ghost singers behind actors at the fascinating site www.janettedavis.net/Dubbers/dubberslist.php Many of those singers were awesome. Only my dear friend Gogi Grant ever received single bill full screen credit in opening as "Songs sung by Gogi Grant" in The Helen Morgan Story causing star Ann Blyth to sue WB getting herself blackballed & finished in films after that. Check out the site
The inability of record companies & film studios to agree then caused so many gorgeous soundtrack themes recorded on film to be never available in the same form on record. It was rare that a record company played ball with a studio so the theme song in the film version with those great huge studio orchestras could be released on soundtracks. In most cases the soundtrack would have the song either sung by someone else or left off & the artist would cut a record with a lesser bands. Common.
I've watched this movie many time and recognized Sam Cooke's unmistakeable voice in the dance scene between Sophia Loren and Cary Grant. I have never seen Sam Cooke listed in the opening or closing credits. Am I mistaken or are the credits rolling so fast that I keep missing this information. If indeed Sam Cooke is not given credits, why not? He was one of the leading recording artists during this period.
The opening credits don't start until 2 minutes into the film. About 40 secs after the credits begin there is a page that reads: Music Score by GEORGE DUNING Songs by JAY LIVINGSTON and RAY EVANS LOVE SONG from HOUSEBOAT (Almost in Your Arms)-Sung by SAM COOKE A Keen Records Artist
@@gat1240 thanks so much for this! (It settles a debate in another comment string) I hadn’t seen Houseboat in a long way and coulda sworn I’d seen Cooke’s name in the credits, thanks again!
@64098 No. As was common in those days (though stupidly as I can't see why they couldn't make the deal to allow it) a recording artist's recordings could not appear on a soundtrack album released by another studio. Paramount the film's studio had a label "DOT" Cooke wasn't with RCA yet still with that bohunk label Keen. So they had him record 2 weak versions, with a small combo & very rushed pace. That's why the releasing studio made Sophia record it. And she did a lovely job. But still...
@64098 Nope. Hopefully one day whatever company owns the rights to the actual magnetic soundtracks literally on the film will let a company like Rhino release the full soundtrack if it still exists in it's raw prerecorded form with no dialogue over it. Rhino's done it with most of the great MGM films. Another company did it with A Star Is Born's soundtrack. So many of those renditions were just never released on record because the record company the artist was signed to wouldn't allow studio to
Would this version be on the soundtrack album, if there is one? It sounds like the version Cary and Sophia are dancing to in the movie. My opinion is that the two women responsible for his death should have been locked up!

Interesting about how these great performers were "owned" by companies supposedly acting in their best interests. Like HELL! Glad I read your comments about the short sighted greed of these studio heads. Did they not realize the movie performance would enhance the sales of the record. What a bunch of idiots. Remember Jack Valenti before congress stating how the VCR and Sony Betamax were going to ruin the movie industry. WHAT A GIGANTIC bunch of rubbish that turned out to be. Every time I hear real great music in movies I rush to the internet to learn more about where it came from , discovering Jay Livingston and Ray Evans was great. These older movie put the credits for the songs at the beginning. Today ,in a theater you have to wait til the end of the credits, it's always practically the very last thing they list to find out the names of the songs , the composer and the performers. You have to wait through a list of practically over a thousand people ,grips, computer effects, go fors, caterers, hair stylists, people that are just pretty much performing a service and are incidentally part of a film. AND BTW Sam Cooke's singing on the movie version is nothing short of fantastic. His classic vocal inflections or should I say tonal modulations are here very prominently in the 2nd and 3rd verses e.g. right when he sings I I I I I 'm almost in your arms, almost in most in your arms, almost in your arms today, the I is sang five times, changing notes each time,it's kind of mini-chorus at the end of each verse. As far as it being rushed, I think the tempo jazzes it up a bit, appropriately so because they are dancing and to do it more slowly wouldn't swing.
SophiA..please! In an interview she gave later in life she confessed she loved Cary. But at the time she was very young, new in the business, he was a big star, she was afraid of the cultural differences, and she took the safe way out by marrying an Italian man, Carlo Ponti. I sensed she saw in Ponti a mentor and father figure as well.
@64098 His nephew wrote a book that claims it wasn't that way at all. It was a racist southern cop who came out to a call because his car was broken down in the road. The cop was treating him like a "Boy" & when Sam asked if he didn't know who he was, he made the mistake of saying to the cop "Your wife knows who I am" IMAGINE. So he got beaten to death & a cover up ensued. Haven't read the book. It's hard to get ahold of but how much more tragic the story becomes then. And I can see it.
Great song...great movie
No one sings this like Sam, it's perfect!!😘
Timeless such a talent beautiful voice
I love this song...love the movie, one of my faves. There's no one like Sam even now.
Movie? Also i can’t believe this comment was around 10 years ago 😟

ME TOO! ; - }; It put icing on the cake for the movie didn't it?
Thinking Cary Grant was actually in love with Sophia during the scene where they dance , to this song !❤

@Gemminicus Thanks for that explanation, it makes a lot of sense considering the way things were done during that time.

where did you get this version?
Sam was a megastar stolen from the world by intrigue that speaks of conspiracy!
Did he give Sinatra a run for his money? Yeah he did.
I think he was better. Both were incredible, however, I give the nod to Sam.
Sam Cooke puts Sinatra to shame.
