You can’t judge the Vietnam Veterans that became drug users. To be forced to fight a war and to come back home viewed as war criminals, would take its toll on anyone in the same position. This movie was full of life lessons, which is why I don’t understand why it wasn’t nominated for so many awards (well, I do know why, but I digress). Dead Presidents is a powerful piece of American cinema that should be praised for the topics it covered

Sadly this is what a lot soldiers came back to from Vietnam. PTSD, physical injuries, Unemployment, drug abuse, Wives/Girlfriends fuckin around, etc etc......Vietnam wasnt a popular war, a lot civilians didnt show the proper respect when those men came home.
JFK was keeping U.S troops from going to Vietnam. But to a certain group of individuals that went against the grain and had JFK assassinated for being in the way.
This was also the time when media coverage of the war was being televised on tv so you could see how the horrors of it would affect the public's perception of the soldiers who were there. Definitely wasn't a popular war and the veterans did not get a warm welcome coming back home.
Most of the soldiers, regardless of color were looked at as murders when they returned from Vietnam. Most of society opposed the war for several reasons and they displayed it to the soldiers/servicemembers upon returning.
Add to that how VERY little we knew about mental health back then. Today you can get therapy online with your phone or a pill for almost anything. The term PTSD wasn't even added (to the DSM?) as a real medical term until the 80s - well after this war. Soldiers were called "shellshocked" - it was seen as weakness. Soldiers were expected to pick themselves up and keep it moving. Most folks didn't associate the night terrors, drug, and alcohol abuse with a mental condition. People were unsympathetic because we truly didn't have a clue...

Nobody really understood much about what they went through over there. They came back so different. Traumatize them and their families. We tried to at least understand. Great reation!!!!
I’m just going through all of the movies that I’ve already seen. This is another favorite. The thing about Juanita is that she was young when Anthony went to war. She had a child to take care of and she chose to use another man. Can’t blame about not knowing about war. She had no clue. And nobody knew about PTSD back then. He came back and he was just another person for her to take care of. And he broke the communication with her so she really just didn’t love him. WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY
I've loved this movie since the day of its release. Such a great classic that doesn't get enough attention. Thanks for shining a light on it with your reactions.
Glad that more people are showing Dead Presidents love! The Anthony and Juanita relationship sadly has a lot of roots in reality. A ton of soldiers came home from Vietnam and had their lives basically upended with the issues that they had and the lack of care (both mentally and financially) drove a lot of guys to horrible ends. Some turned to crime like Anthony, Skippy, and Jose, others got sucked up into drugs, and others ended up lost on the streets. This is a tragic story for sure. I'd recommend Barbershop for a review, along with Don't Be A Menace, and Scary Movie. Love the channel guys!
I'm the daughter of a Vietnam vet and this movie makes me sad because it's so true. They encouraged drug use to keep their minds off of the killing they had to do. Smh!
The character of Anthony was put into the perfect storm of chaos. He was desperate and determined to make a better life for himself. While he meant well, he went about it in a way that cost people's lives. I do respect anyone who tries their best, even if they utterly fail. If only all of the characters could have found a good way to deal with their problems. My advice to everyone out there reading this. Work hard, find your passion, respect others, respect yourself, take responsibility for your actions, love the best people in your life, fight for all that is right in your life, try to understand all people, educate yourself and those around you. None of us can do all of these things everyday. Don't chase perfection just always make a strong effort. These things are a road map to a fully well lived life.
You guys are watching some great 90's films. Keep up the good work. Love your reactions. As a 45 year old movie buff myself I highly recommend "The Wood", "The Best Man" and "Falling Down". You will love them.
Dead Presidents was the initial follow-up to Menace 2 Society by the Hughes Brothers, and while it lacks that movie's structural cohesion and cultural impact, it is by far the more interesting and ambitious of the two, trading in the preachiness of Menace for a shoot-the-moon, triple-decker reimagining of the black American experience as a 1970s genre flick. It also has Keith David in total badass, Godhead mode, and sports one of the best soundtracks of the era.
Awww man! I was 18 or 19 when this came out. My mother brought it on VHS. I also brought the Soundtrsck to the movie, one of the BEST soundtracks you'll ever buy. From what my mother told me, many men that came from the Vietnam War weren't the same when they returned. Things were a harder, jobs were VERY hard to come by. Many were looked down on when they returned. The Vietnam war was a BIG mess, a hit ppl hard but it hit poor and Black communities the hardest. ALSO Lawrenzo Tate and Chris Tucker did a music video with Issac Hayes for the song " Walk On By". You guys are DOPE! Thank You 👍🏽🔥🙏🏾🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Y’all are by far the best movie reviewers. The attention to detail, the script & storyline. You guys even pay attention to the setting. Saw this film a long time ago, and I never knew it was based on a true story! The events of the movie actually happened.
Thanks for reacting to this. I was a kid when Vietnam war was going on. My older brother and some of his friends were in that war.
I think you guys should try Rosewood with Ving Rhames and Don Cheadle. It’s based on a true story lol
Omg I can't even watch that movie now🤦🏾
@@NN-wu8fw I've watched that movie ONCE. I can't even watch it ever again. 😪
@@reneedennis2011 Same here, I've never watched that movie more than once... It left me with too much anger 😡!!
@@newera5238 Exactly!
I'm the daughter of a Vietnam vet and this movie makes me sad because it's so true. They encouraged drug use to keep their minds off of the killing they had to do. Smh!
Fun fact Anthony plays Kevin/O-dog in menace to society
I would say this movie has the greatest soundtrack of all time, or a very close second to "American Pimp" also by the Hughes Brothers.
Y’all reactions have perfect comedic timing 😂😂
My favorite movie. Glad you guys decided to react to this classic. An underrated one at that.
I could watch Keith David all day
Not a veteran, but I can relate as a dad, stay strong y’all, keep on keepin on
One of the best soundtracks ever! Glad you guys enjoyed this!
Do Mindhunters next with LL Cool J. It is a good old psychological thriller
Amazing that you guys watched this. One of my favorite movies. Next, it’s time to watch ‘The Wood’ with Omar Epps and Taye Diggs.
Great reaction as always 😩! Still waiting on Berry Gordy's 1985 film " The Last Dragon " my favorite movie!
“Poetic Justice” next! Let’s go!
I've waited a long time to get to see this for the 1st time and now it's one of my favorite ensemble films
You guys are watching some great 90's films. Keep up the good work. Love your reactions. As a 45 year old movie buff myself I highly recommend "The Wood", "The Best Man" and "Falling Down". You will love them.
Falling down! It's not meant to be a comedy but.....😂😂😂

Do Sugar Hill & Blue Hill Avenue Next 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
And New Jersey drive
Omg Blue Hill Avenue was that shit!
This movie was so good. I am glad you finally seen it.
You gotta watch Tales from the Hood.
Larenz Tate is underrated... You guys should checkout “The Inkwell”... Great coming of age story and so many legendary actors in the movie ✌🏾
"25th Hour" with Edward Norton
and
"Sugar Hill" with Wesley Snipes
Crazy how beautiful the little sister grew up to be she really loved him.
Fun fact, the lady that kirby punched in the face is Heather B from SWAY IN THE MORNING 😆 GET THE F OFF OF SPIDER 😂
Thank You 👍🏽🔥🙏🏾🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I subbed today, didn’t realize I wasn’t. I love your reactions. The most genuine reactions on TH-cam!
I love this movie. So glad y'all are watching it.
I never comment on you guys post and I just subscribed to your channel. Im a huge fan of how you guys react to the movies i grew up on, it's always good seeing our storytelling being liked by people of a different race. Continue the honesty in your reactions.
Yo it’s awesome how deeply you guys get into the movie.
This movie does a great job showing what happened to black soldiers after the Vietnam war. They came home to nothing..no parade..no respect..nothing. Also shows how aids and heroin got into our country. Great reaction fellas. You guys are awesome and hilarious lol
Great reaction guys. I reccomend watching Money Talks next. It's a hilarious Chris Tucker classic movie💯😂
Y’all are by far the best movie reviewers. The attention to detail, the script & storyline. You guys even pay attention to the setting. And to top it off you really take time to understand the message. The commentary is always just enough without you guys rambling and talking over the movie. This is like my 10th watch from you guys in 12 hours. There are so many movies i want you guys to review.
Speaking of Terrence Howard, you guys seen Hustle and Flow? Watch Hustle and Flow.
They did on their Patreon
You guys should check out The Wood & What’s Love Got to do with it!
29:21 The minimum wage increased to $2.00 an hour in 1974, $2.10 in 1975, and $2.30 in 1976 for all except farm workers, whose minimum initially rose to $1.60.
