The beeping that you hear on the call is generated by the payphone and I believe the main reason for it is to prevent people making "reversed charges" calls to payphones. The operator would hear the beeping and refuse to put the call through.
Email and text on a pay phone that's pretty cool, we never got that in the US maybe in some more touristy areas. They still allow incoming calls that's awesome. In the US return phone calls were most likely disabled due to call theft as in call me back so I don't have to put another dime in. and I suspect some areas share lines so outgoing calls are cheaper than incoming and Service is either disabled for incoming or the line is set up to not have incoming as it might ring multiple phones.
You know something I did that there today I was in my local town and I seen a payphone and I called it I did the exact same thing as you did I said hello hello you hear that beeping hello and then Hung up
I Had One Of These Down My Road It Got Removed A Good Few Years Ago Now, Because Everyone Ruined It, Smashed Glass, Men's Piss All Over It, Sick, Drug Users! Disgusting How People Treat Things. They Used To Be A Rip Off Though, It Would Charge My House Phone Loads If I Left My Mum A Message To Say Where I Had Gone Lol She Used To Go Mad
Paige Brown that’s a shame to hear, this one is still there but a lot of the other phone boxes around Dundee have been removed since even a few red ones which were in good condition!
I think they’re only used by drug dealers currently, they can send texts, emails and calls anonymously, same as how nobody uses cash any more so most ATMs are used by drug dealers too, or people buying drugs.

Hey how do you do a space when sending a text?
It's the number 0 I think
Hey if you go to the phone box rn I will call it
WTF u use these any more!?!
well, not everybody has infinite calls, or battery life, and if you left in a hurry, maybe not even their phone. also they're a nice novelty.
I love using the phone box near my house. It just has that little bit of history that makes it better.

I used one recently when my phone died. They are a safety net
