There's no issue using online car hailing without a China number. I been doing that for years. You can register for an account with Didi using your country number. I have yet to encounter driver trying to call me. Having an eSender china number is good for registering 大众 美团etc to get good deals and order food delivery. You cannot do that without a China number.
