Being in a band myself from time to time,ego is the worst then the drugs and alcohol which I do neither of them or a insecure person which leads to ego’s. Bands from years ago lasted longer due to more grounded people,but it’s not perfect either.I have to read Sammys book to see more.

      Don't get me wrong.. I love Sammy as a solo artist.
      That being said, for me personally, after Roth left there was no Van Halen.
      I mean the original VH's music is untouchable.

    Sammy - business man, clear thinker, hard worker, genuine. The rock'n roll business is one of the toughest in the world, and Sammy has remained consistently good and productive for 40 years. And beyond the R'nR biz as well. I think that says a lot. He may have said too much about Edward in his book, but telling all lets other folks understand his decisions. Provided they believe his version, as I do...But - who knows? Rock on, Sammy!

    DLR and Sammy are like Bon Scott and Brian Johnson. Both brilliant in their own way. I'm just glad they both recorded great records.

    • @thomasdaniels6824
      @thomasdaniels6824 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No way sir, i repsectfully disagree. Brian Johnson, along with the never dying support of the original line up, kept Ac/dc's rock icon status alive in the memory of Bon Scott while DLR and the Sammy saga has plagued Van Halen for over 30 yrs. I agree with you on them recording both though.

    • @alanparrish7767

    • @yourinnervoiceyourinnervoi8552
      @yourinnervoiceyourinnervoi8552 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      A large part of the resistance to Sammy replacing DLR is that despite being a popular rock band for 7 years, VH was at their apex of popularity after 1984. It certainly didn’t help matters that the first 3 singles released from 5150 were all keyboard song, (Why Can’t This Be Love, Love Comes Walking In, Dreams), and the first guitar based single was “Best of Both Worlds” we which is good but not for a first impression. If that ”Heeelllo Baaaby” at the beginning of “Good Enough” , followed by that riff was the first thing America heard, most people would’ve thought “Oh! It’s gonna be cool, different, but cool”.
      P.S., Sammy’s hair looked kinda stupid in their first photos with him. This didn’t help!

    FOUR REASONS Why I dig Sammy Hagar:
    1) He has managed to keep his vocals in superb shape; seeing he has been touring and recording for decades now, that is impressive.
    2) His vocal range has and I suspect will always a cut above.
    3) He loves performing, I saw Van Halen in Las Vegas- Sammy Sang his heart out.
    4) Chickenfoot- THAT BAND ROCKS!

    • @EveBarrettDrew
      @EveBarrettDrew 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey Guys- I hate to report this but I WAS there and sadly enough we wish we HAD NOT wasted the time. Don't get me wrong, the show was okay (and I love his music) but the evening was terrible- let me explain-
      The ticket category prices were as follows: $65 standing only-(orange colored wrist bands) Tickets sold at $85.00 (red wrist bands- that was what we purchased) were standing "room" only (event center was outside actually) and this $20 upgrade was to give us a reserved "spot" (still standing BUT in a special limited number of people capacity section that was to be located IN FRONT of the stage.Well- we got the upgraded $85 tickets but there was not a upgrade at ALL!! We were stuck in a human stew of orange banded general admission ticketholders and red banded upgraders all pushing and pulling was so to win a spot closest to the stage intense that we finally opted to sit basically behind the stage! There were also $125 ticketholders who had chairs and a special seating area that the LV Metro Police Dept did regulate but they were positioned on the side of the stage. THOSE tickets were like I said were designated and policed for crowd control but that was because they were Cabo transfers that had already paid the price to see Sammy in Cabo San Lucas before the hurricane changed that. Here is the cherry on that birthday cake- everyone (the $65, the $85 and even the $125 ticketholders) were forced for almost 2 hours to stand in line to purchase a beer (warm) or a drink. This made EVERYONE pissed; I mean people all over the place were angry which a pleasant experience it was NOT. Just think about it- a few thousand or so people - all of them irritated for enjoying the show in a drink line barely able to see the stage while the person they went with (me) was trying to make her way through a thick agressive human stew of people trying to reach an area that did not exist and was already occupied with orange banded ticket holders as well as confused & angry red banded people (like me) trying to push through to front of the stage to locate the $85 section that did not exist! The VIP section (Cabo transfers) very also very hostile and angry atmosphere because of the 2 hour wait in line beverage SNAFU! (BTW: a insane 2 hour wait in line for as drink ended costing us $22 for 2 very small weak watered down drinks. . . and the fun of enjoying the concert in the drink line where you couldn't really see the stage at all! Also- the song list that Hagar described in his media announcements was not what we heard. The concert was good but they ended playing 6 (yes SIX) old Van Halen tunes and 4 Led Zeppelin tunes and only 2 Chickenfoot songs. Hagar had said in his press releases that $125.00 VIP Cabo transfers would get an opportunity to get a signed autograph after the show. They didn't get anything. We witnessed this: the show ended and he did not do an encore (something that most every concert goer expects) and then Hagar disappeared into a black limo & sped off down the road! The ticket upgrade SNAFU- I am not saying was his fault. However, all the factors I described above were treated to having a bad experience in one way or another. Maybe they should have said for an extra $20 you can give Sammy a little something extra for his birthday. Those of us who paid the extra $20 bucks for that non-existent special were ripped off-regardless of whose fault it was. The kicker here was that he saluted us (like a soldier) after abruptly ending the show and said " I salute you Las V for having us and making the Cabo Bash still happen. I couldn't help but think at this point, "no need to thank us... we already got screwed". I am not placing blame entirely on Hagar but his press releases did not deliver what he said would happen on stage, the event center didn't accommodate what was promised and everybody (Cabo transfers too) were slighted. We are intending to determine what the hell went wrong here. I will update when matter is addressed with Las Vegas Event Center. Stay tuned. Oh! And as for all of you that couldn't attend - please do not feel so bad… the event was basically a disaster all around.

    • @EveBarrettDrew
      @EveBarrettDrew 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well- apparently there were LOTS of ticketholders that were angry re: Sammy's belated Birthday Bash because we got a hold of the 'D"'s event center administrative department to voice our dissatisfaction. They said they were well aware of situation. I told them we didn't want a full refund but wanted back the extra $40 bucks we spent to upgrade our tickets. The representative who I spoke to asked instead if we'd be interested in seeing Brett Michaels concert coming up at LV Event Center. We said "sure, why not'! We received our tickets today and were very pleased to see they had given us V.I.P. seats! I'm not a huge fan of Brett Michaels but it should be a fun event to attend. Many thanks to the LV Event Center Staff!

      @Tyler Mod Yet you are also using a rule of "common denominator"...although you're not calling it that...by lumping all lead singers into the Cluster B category of pathological narcissism (based on what you describe)....but you can't see that about yourself, can you?
      I do agree with you that many lead singers can be narcissistic, entitled divas (hello Elton John and Freddie Mercury!), but you are (seemingly?) ignoring the FACT that EVH was an active alcoholic whose drinking drove band members out of the band or, in Sammy's case, caused him to fly into a rage and throw Sammy out. Alex was his enabler-protector, and Alex himself got sober and stayed sober (which is something that people with Cluster B disorders can rarely, if ever, pull off).
      There are many, many people who knew EVH when he was actively drinking who will tell you he was a horrible person to be around, despite his generous, kind nature when he wasn't drinking.
      The fact that you don't know this (if you're a VH fan?) is a bit odd? Where have you been? It's not exactly a secret.
      It's also no secret that those same band members you are lumping together as commonly narcissistic....Dave, Sammy...talk about how much they adore Eddie when he's not drinking, and there are so many videos about this on TH-cam that it's surprising that you haven't come across them?
      Again, where have you been? Your story does NOT hold water in this situation.
      ...and you're doing the same thing that the OP did, but bitching about them doing it.

    • @le_th_
      @le_th_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Tyler Mod You were speaking very particularly about this person's use of "common denominator" and I pointed out how you were doing the EXACT THING YOUR ACCUSED SOMEONE ELSE OF DOING.
      I pointed out your hypocricy, and you glossed right over it.
      Then I pointed out how your argument didn't really apply because Michael Anthony also left.
      That is when you started back pedaling...
      ...and yes, it is *sometimes* true that lead singers have personality issues, and that is common to most people who seek fame and the spotlight (but not all of them).

    • @le_th_
      @le_th_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Tyler Mod You continue to DEMONSTRATE thinking patterns that are considered disordered in your comments.
      Like all-or-nothing (aka black-and-white thinking) such as "all rock and roll bands are the same".
      Pointing out flawed thinking in the OP's post that you yourself exhibit i.e. the common denominator statement that YOU pointed out was incorrect but FAILED to see you were doing the same.
      You fail to acknowledge that MIchael Anthony has said many times that he left the band because he could no longer deal with Eddie's drinking and Alex letting him get away with being an asshole. Michael left after Eddie, once again, failed to keep his word and started drinking again. All the former bandmates agree that Eddie is great when he is NOT drinking (as does the man's ex-wife who was never in the band).
      You speak about "patterns of behavior" and this is true of narcissists, borderlines, sociopaths, and other disordered individuals, yet you fail to see your OWN patterns here (like criticizing what the OP said while doing it yourself, and then still not acknowledging it until I don't let it go, then you make excuses why it's okay for you to make that same statement. That's disordered thinking, dude. Or do you also believe that the rules that apply to others do NOT apply to you? If you do, you have demonstrated up to 3 narcissistic patterns of thinking right there alone.
      Can lead vocalists be divas? Sure, I named 2 of the biggest divas Elton John and Freddie Mercury. Are their others out there like them yes.
      Every band is not the same. Def Leppard came together at the HEIGHT of their fame to allow their drummer not only to heal from his car accident but also to learn to play the drums with 1 arm. Rush was very democratic in how they operated. Those are just 2 off the top of my head.
      Is Axl Rose an entitled asshole? Sure, but he has Borderline Personality Disorder (a disorder found in 40% of US and UK prison populations, both male and female). Was Scott Weiland a narcissistic prick, yes, especially when he was using.
      Narcissists NEED, not want, NEED public admiration, which is why they CHOOSE professions that will place them in the spotlight, like politics, sports (if they have the athletic ability), telvision, film, or music. Reality TV created a new kind of attention-seeking based on infamy. Now, the less talented narcissists can create TH-cam channels to garner public admiration.
      The more misogynistic, histrionic, and attention-seeking people (Russel Brand, Kanye, Dr. Dre, and so many more) and especially those who cannot maintain their sobriety are the people who are more severely disordered. They are, for lack of a better word, the repeat offenders who believe the rules and laws apply to everyone else BUT them?
      I'm not flaming you. What I am doing is pointing our your hypocrisy and all-or-nothing thinking patterns that you have demonstrated in this exchange, and those are 2 very common disordered traits that are found in disordered individuals.
      It is true that SOME lead vocalists are highly narcissistic, but when Sammy, Dave, Cherone, and MIchael all say that Eddie's behavior became dysfunctional due to his drinking, and his ex-wife left him for the same reason, I think it's probably safe to say that Sammy, Dave, Cherone, Michael Anthony and Valerie can't all be misguided and wrong....especially when it is widely known how many times Ed plummeted off the wagon.
      Heck, even other bands on tour with them talk about how they initially thought Eddie was such a cool guy to hang out with them before they went on stage, but then they eventually discovered it was because they had ALCOHOL in their dressing room and Eddie wasn't allowed alcohol in his.
      Saying that "all rock and roll bands are the same" only makes you sound ignorant and (to me) like you have disordered thinking patterns. There are exceptions and it is also true that people can allow fame to go to their head and become divas. The same can be said for rap groups, as well as pop stars. Some people stay grounded and others don't, and some come to the party disordered since early childhood. You have to *pay attention* and listen, observe, and seek out multiple sources of information before you can know, with any certainty, which is which.

      ***** Ok, That's a lot to digest, but here it goes. Eddies guitar playing hasn't been an issue with this reunion tour other then a couple fall off the wagon shows where he's had a few too many. They've done a damn good job covering for Mike A. vocally. I was surprised at how good Wolfe and his Dad managed it.
      Now Eddies son was only 15 years old when they did the 2007 tour. Dave Roth hadn't played with them in so long, He forgot a lot of the lyrics. I think this next tour and cd will be a lot more polished even though Roth lost a lot of his extreme vocals due to mostly age.
      Having a son myself, I can totally see why Eddie would want to take his boy under his wing. I see nothing wrong with that at all. It's natural for a father to want to spend time with his son. The kid is a serious bass player also.

I love alot of bands, I have my top list like everyone else, but VH are my overall fave rock band and I loved both era's of VH. I just think the DLR era was over and should have stayed over especially because of how DLR is now live. I caught the 2007 tour, DLR wasn't too bad, but the 2012 tour.... ugghh couldn't stand it. What Dave got away with in the 80s, the showmanship live rather than focusing on musicianship and vocals, doesn't cut it anymore. Sammy is real class here and I have seen other interviews where he says the same thing...you can tell that he felt bad and was heartbroke over how things went. I heard stories about how in the early days of VH that he would turn his back to the crowd during solos because he didn't want people to pick up on his guitar techniques. Then there was the way he acted towards David Lee Roth at the MTV music awards that I thought was uncalled for. And then there's the way he did Michael Anthony. Come on man! Jeff Beck was already on the scene in England before Hendrix showed up there.

      Hendrix was inventive and truly great, but Townshend, Page and Beck was on to the same ideas in 1964 - 1965 already.

    I agrre with Sammy and he is a best friend to Michael more than Eddie (R.I.P.) and Alex was, even both know him and playing more time with the bass player! Sammy is honest and a real decent guy...

    It's amazing how egos destroy friendships, VH and Sammy wrote great songs. It's mind blowing how people can not be happy wit their success.

      Be in a band for 10 years on any level. It’s a relationship man. Things happen and sometimes things go south. Money and fame don’t just magically make problems go away. They are people not superhero’s. 🙄🤣

    They are both doing well! I am a huge VH fan and I also have a ton of respect for Sammy. I liked him well before he joined VH. Maybe they will bury the hatchet and maybe they won't. I will always listen to both and not judge. Also, if you listen he is constantly badgered about his past with VH; He doesn't voluntarily just go after them.

    Last year I got see both Van Halen & Chickenfoot. Let me tell you one thing, and this is from a Van Halen lover. Van Halen is dead. What you see on stage today is...I don't know what to call it. DLR is so far past his prime that is embarrassing to watch him perform. And what made VH so great was Michael Anthony. ow they got this fat little teenage boy who is only there because of dad, and Alex, who is still Alex. But Eddie doesn't have that "rock star" vibe any more. Chicken foot is just so much more solid, and it's a true supergroup. Satch is so much more complete and is peaking. Chad and Michael are just a rock solid rythym section, and Sammy can blow by David like he's standing still. They broke into a cover of Highway Star and the place just lost it. And I hate it. I hate having to admit that Van Halen is dead. But the truth is the truth.

      Danny Criss The shuck and jive deal Roth has been feeding off of for years looks bad on him now. That stuff is juvenile and never stands the test of time. What does? Great singing, therefore, they need Hagar back pronto.

      xmoniker@hotmail.com My friend, truer words have never been printed on TH-cam. You nailed it. His shtick is old, worn out, and since he cannot do the running karate thing, All he has left is the voice. And that has been exposed. Wish there were more people like you on the Tube.

      +Täking Thë High Roäd well said-Sammy saved VH in the mid '80s and I loved both versions back in the day but I agree they couldn't pay me to see the present washed up version of VH!

      +Täking Thë High Roäd Well said by you. I believe what Sammy is saying in this video. Sammy has always been a gentleman, as opposed to the self-centered Eddie and David Lee Roth.

      +Täking Thë High Roäd .......... ALL RIGHT..... ALL RIGHT...... O.K........ you're right. It just hurts to much to admit because it makes me feel so old. I've seen them both too. Hell, I've seen VH many, many times.... with all their different configurations. None were better than Van Hagar!! Sammy was the icing on their cake and I couldn't stop listening to them. Just like now! But DLR.... whew..... it's time to retire. You're right, It is embarrassing. Love Chickenfoot. If the Van Hagar group ever got together again it would be a miracle. We need a miracle!

    Always loved Van Halen, especially with Sammy on vocals for "Don't tell me what love can do," the greatest song of all time.... In my opinion of course, so I can't really say one lead man was better than the other, but it would be nice if they let the past go, having made such great music together

      Agreed,i LOVE "Humans Being" also but it almost didn't happen and they had to drag Sammy away from Hawaii to come and record it.I like the heavy stuff from Van Halen with Sammy but hated it when they went soft.I HATE "Junk" also even though everyone else thought it was good.They melted my ears with it on radio and i never really liked it when it first came out.I think "Balance is a VERY underrated album also.I liked a few songs with Gary but they sounded better live.Speaking of "Junk", i went to a VH concert on the ADKOT tour and the last song was "Jump" and i JUMPED out of my seat and left i hated it so much.

    I was the absolute biggest EVH fan on the planet growing up. Every record + bootlegs, every guitar magazine, wall posters, sheet music books, I have 7 old 80s kramer guitars... largely because of eddies influence. They guy just burns bridges... every personal relationship he has ends up with burnt bridges, back stabbing and hurt. Whether its Sammy, michael, Gary cherone, heartley peavy, Sterling ball, kramer guitars, Valerie. Theres probably more too. I saw a NAMM interview with Sterling john petrucci and i think steve morse, and they were talking about endorsees. They mentioned the Axis, the model that gets its inspiration from the EVH sig model. They mentioned it like "thats the guitar we worked on with that other guy..."... they all smiled and shrugged it off. You could tell its a subject that Sterling was not comfortable talking about on camera at that moment. Its sad, but wth... as a fan and guitar playrt I've moved on from EVH. I've accepted who he is as a person and musician. AFIAK he has not actually written (or produced) any new music since the mid 90s... thats a quarter century to be musically dormant. Thats a LONG time to be playing the same riffs over and over.
