Laura rejecting the help of the police offer and his squad of well-equipped werewolf hunters to go on a solo mission to kill Chris Hackett when he's obviously not the first werewolf makes almost no sense whatsoever
Based on context clues from the poem + the cop hiding Chris's identity, it seems like the rules are "the further up the chain you kill, the more people down the chain you save," ie. if you kill the FIRST werewolf you save everyone, but if she kills Chris (which is someone she knows and can find, presumably, an easier option) then she saves Max. Which is what she wants.

So then decides to go against the person who's actively hunting the actual cure, while going on her own mission to kill a werewolf that might not cure Max at all. If you're going to make a lore significant limerick, either make it cryptic enough so that it can't be trusted, or make sure the story works for its more obvious interpretation. Don't give it an obvious interpretation and make the story/characters revolve around an entirely different interpretation.
