I saw him live in L.A. around 2010. Hey was very overweight and had a constant arm tremor, caused by his medications. He guzzled through many bottles of water between songs, and read lyrics and chords from a music stand.
The truth is, he didn't play amazingly. He made a lot of mistakes. What WAS amazing though was how much the audience loved him. Nobody cared that he made mistakes. He received huge applause after every song. We all loved him, were aware of how hard his road was, and knew we were seeing a guy who fought his way through it all and was still up onstage, with a compromised body (and probably compromised thinking and feeling), due to his meds. He could do no wrong that night.

In my country Argentina lived a man there in 1960, José Alberto Iglesias, known as Tanguito, changed Argentine music, especially rock, began the entire national rock movement from which artists like Spinetta and Charly García were born, some will surely recognize those names. Tanguito did not have the best voice, or the best musical production, or exotic lyrics, it was simple and natural music of a great soul which to this day produce emotions for me. It is known that at that time not many appreciated him, he got into drugs and his life came down. He died escaping from a psychiatric hospital. Daniel Johnston and Tanguito, I love them, their music, their styles, their souls and their story, their deaths are one of the things that make me feel really sad, I think they both have similar stories in different places.

When a person is troubled, there is no time to be fake. There is no time to worry about what others think. There is no time for anything but truth and pain. People like Daniel frighten those who refuse to face their demons. He opens a door they wish to hold tightly shut. This is also why his music is so touching for those who understand it. He boldly admits to what is behind the door. RIP Daniel.

This film is incredible. Daniel isn't an artist like, say, David Bowie. Not in the same world. But, there is something so warm and fragile and strange and wonderful about Daniel and his music. It elevates higher than just enjoying a song, you feel like you're experiencing something special. Like a glimmer of a gem in a huge massive hunk of boring rock.

Something I appreciate & admire about Daniel is that he made his music all on his own, even though he didn't have the best equipment. Each time he wanted to create a new tape, he had to rerecord all of it. So all of them sounded unique. That amount of passion to share your music is something worth praising.
We all went as a group (little sister, Mommy, 3 friends and their mommy) to a theater here in Indiana that specializes in art films, indi films and other interesting stuff. I had never heard of him before the documentary and found it too weird for me, but I don't regret seeing it. My sister & I recently talked about this film to my boyfriend. She went on a whole tangent about it, so I suppose she got real into his music/biography after seeing it.

i'm kind of disappointed by all of the misunderstood criticism on his music. you don't need to be technically great (ex. have as wide of a vocal range as prince or axl rose, play guitar like hendrix or bb king, play cello like yo yo ma) to make great music. daniel johnston is a testament to that. he didn't take any guitar, piano, and vocal lessons. despite this, he is a great artist who has made great music. i've only listened to "hi, how are you a few times". i haven't digested his other albums as much as i have for this one, so i'll just talk about it. there is so much to appreciate about this record. johnston's child-like and innocent vocal prescene and playful instrumentals juxtaposed against his dark and depressing lyricism create an eery atmospehere for the listener. some may complain about the lo-fi quality of the record, but it actually adds to the record. it makes it easier to imagine him having a nervous breakdown in his garage while recording this album and it gives a strong emotional impression unto you. when johnston yelps "how am i supposed to love if i never got love?" i feel deeply disturbed and sympathetic that he felt this way

I haven't seen this in a while. Brilliant film i'd recommend to anyone. I became a big underground fan of a lo of cool stuff (in 95 i met someone in a big band and he had all these demos of awesome artists, some he opened for or who opened for him and the band covered a Rocketship but i wasn't really aware of much till me and my friends went through the every Johnston tape) I met Daniel in, i think it was 1999 twice. He's awesome, awesome shows in a small place and people came from all over the world (He was selling Rejection Unknown and they spoke of a movie that will take a while but is coming out) On TH-cam there is a set of him in 1999, and then there's the one live (on cassette and CD under two diff names, it was a show in Germany at the time) Point is, in 1999 i loved that set - songs, "Kool Aid," (a good opener he was doing) "Frustrated Artist" - "Folly" - "Mr Lonley" - some of his greatest stuff IMO and for the most part none of those songs got proper studio recordings. I love Johnston, and i love the originals. Sometimes you still get that person, "What is this?" and then you put on the cover and they love it, and then i'm upset lol - peace

I first heard about him from The SPIN Alternative Record Guide back in the mid nineties, but have only heard a few snippets of only a handful of songs. It's tragic how our society treats those whom we consider mentally ill as pariahs that need to be sequestered away and have their artistic talents blunted or excised entirely by pharmaceuticals because they are simply misunderstood. I'll now have to watch the film and bring some tissue because I have a feeling I won't be able to hold back the waterworks.

I think it's kinda funny reading the comments of the people who don't get it. It's always the ones that can't understand how sometimes perfecting the physicality of whatever discipline the artist practices takes away from the raw expression. Daniels case is obviously an exaggerated version of this, which is why his music is so easy to not like, but to watch the documentary and not realize the unconventional and unintended genius of the man is just laughable.

I'm quite a documentary buff but I've gotta say this is still my favorite documentary. It's truely riveting and hard to not get totally engrossed in it. Few years back, it was free on crackle.com and I watched it about 5 times in a row.

Dr.Popsicle Danny and I were friends as teenagers. I knew him before all this happened to him. He was a great person with a dream. It hurts me to see how his life went. So much pain for a good person to go through who just wanted to be loved for his artistic ability.

I could imagine so. Such an interesting story. Makes me wonder how he's doing nowadays.

I watched the documentary "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" and apart from it being frightening and heartbreaking, in it there's certain things he said that epitomise what this record means to me. "I'm ok coz I know where ever i go I have music in my heart." His childlike purity stills me. Such a stunning song. Andrea x
Andrea covers 'Some Things Last A Long Time' on her new album 'Lifelines' due out on 30 May 2011.

Are you really Andrea Corr? I know this is quite a stretch but it would blow my mind if this is really you. My sister used to play your music when I was alot younger. It brings back alot of good memories, and you wouldnt understand what I would give to relive those days. That's the power of music I guess, it's fuel for the heart and soul.

    Lucky stars in your eyes...
    I'm walking the cow...
I really don't know how I came here...
I really don't know why I'm stayin' here...
Oh, Oh, Oh. I'm walking the cow...
    Tried to point my finger,
But the wind keeps blowin' me around
    In circles...circles...
    Lucky stars in your eyes...
    I'm walking the cow...
