Man. For what it is, this toy looks damn near perfect. Solid design, solid build quality, entertainingly fiddly yet suitably intuitive transformation. Surprised to see people complaining about him. I'll never stop being fascinated by the engineering on these things, too. The spiky wheel base/helicopter side-things that are the reason for Springer having pointy, yellow SHOULDERS, folding around to become his FEET? And still having room to magically develop new, cartoon accurate shoulders out of nowhere in spite of that? It's brilliant!
I think the engineering is great. Things fold away intelligently and intuitively with thoughts to little details and he makes it to the correct G1 configs for where things go without getting crazy with panels and such. It's the aesthetics I just can't get past. You described it well. Pair the guy who designed this up with someone who has finesse for looks and such and they'd undoubtedly be without compare as the 'perfect' examples of the characters they homage.
This is outstanding! Looked at Fanstoys version and passed. I wanted this at first sight. I mean Peaugh was giddy as a school girl, even though it doesn't really fit in his collection.

He seems to be a huge improvement over Sworder. UT has gotten much better with their toy construction, APPEARS to be working with reigning in the issues I didn't like in Sworder (most are still there but only happens once or twice). I don't mind the chunky form, but especially with him, I feel like they could have easily downscaled him a fair bit before they would've had a problem. He doesn't quite with MP anyway.

This is what I've been hoping for, this like MOTUC to MOTUC 2.0 with less of the hassle. Even if they even do only this guy, this is still what I've wanted all along. Clean, Solid and Fun. Like a G1 with articulation, better engineering than the old toys and more screen accurate. This is the most excited I've been for a preorder. If the only do one more I'd be down for a Wreck-Gar if that's not on the table throw me a Sharkticon Unique Toys and I'll be happy. Thank you sir.
Now THIS is how you manufacture a figure. No hollow parts or gaps and solid, fully-colored pieces. I agree he looks Playskool-y, but I also feel like I wouldn't have to worry about him breaking anywhere. The sword's even badass. They should even manufacture a sticker sheet to fill in some of the blander areas. Small caveat--I love the G1's cockpit that slid back for a wider window for the car mode to distinguish it from the copter mode. This one just stays the same.

Oh my god, I cannot throw money at this fast enough. I'm someone who DOES love Sworder, for the exemplary tabs, joints, pegs and overall sturdyness. I want to *play* with these suckers. And seeing this, it looks like everything I love about Sworder's plastic and design, plus a lot more smoothness. Mmmmmmm.

At the end of the day Fans Toys will probably release their version late 2017 and this is an excellent representation. Its actually nice to have multiple flavors of stylized G1 Masterpieces! This looks absolutely flawless. I must try to find a way to get it. You know what I like too, it's a very small thing but the slot on his chest looks perfectly shaped for an autobot sticker, like they are inviting you to slap one on because they can't, which I'll totally do if I ever get my hands on him.
I really think he'll go nicely with other MP's. The simplistic geometry of Ironhide/Ratchet's legs and even the new Hot Rod do the similar style. Also, never discount the effect a faction logo makes too. That huge field of green broken up with an Autobot logo will make the world of difference. Add a ReproLabels set into the mix and this is definitely my MP Springer.
this is one of the best transformers i own. whats amazing about it is its engineering -how different the chopper and robot mode look - truly 'more than meets the eyes' not sure why you thought it had no matches - he looks Very similar (in my opinion) to DX9 blitzwing and Galvatron .. and then also has the same clean cartoon like lines like mp ironhide.. either way, great review and truly one of the best pieces out this year.

So when bayformers came out the fans were whining that the TFs weren't boxy or G1 enough and now they get a boxy G1 colorful Springer and the fans bitch. Im with you P he looks solid and fun.
I don't usually look at a 3rd party figure and say 'Hey that looks pretty cool, I wish I had the money to get that.' unless it's one of the more impressive looking Combiner Teams, (like Guardia or Feral Rex) but when I saw this guy? Well to be perfectly honest my first thought was 'Does he actually transform or is it just an action figure?', (which to me the fact that it wasn't immediately obvious at first glance is actually pretty impressive) but once I saw that he *does* transform (and more importantly *how* he does it) I _immediately_ said aloud 'I WANT this toy.' I can't think of much that I don't like about him that you didn't mention in the review, but I need to give some serious props to the way they handled the way his sword becomes his alt mode propeller, because that thing is cool as hell and easily one of my favorite parts of how this guy's transformation works.
I really want to see a side by side with this guy and DX9's Gewalt and a few other figures from the MP aesthetic to see exactly how he may or may not work within a sole MP collection.
He is big and chunky and actually looks like a kids toy that hides a complex transformation. He looks like he was taken directly out of the cartoon and has some of the weirdness that the animators occasionally did back in the 80's. The yellow feet are a little weird but they look painted so thats an easy fix. The dark grey stoic face also bothers me since when I think of Springer I think of that smile he has in the movie. In terms of style he kinda reminds me of a Megazord- only with considerably more articulation. I have this guy on preorder and I'm looking forward to getting him. That being said, some of the other third party figures have sorta caught my eye, so we'll see. Size looks pretty good, I always thought he should be a big fella- more of an APC than a car altmode. Maybe you can make this guy out to be a hypothetical "Springer Prime"? Detailing looks alright to me, and in crowd shots he should look fine. I kinda hope they do Arcee, but I figure she should be the same size as MP Road Rage. Well, actually, I want someone to do an MP10 sized Elita One. Anyhow, good review as always.
I have this figure. Very solid, worth the buy. I do hate that his size is so big. Doesn't scale well with Masterpiece figures, especially as a race car or helicopter. I hate that his thighs are so bulky (they lose rotation span as a result) and that his feet are so big. But other than that, definitely worth the buy in terms of quality and effort/design. I'd definitely like to check out the version with the shiny sword and the missile cog from the movie.
They can angle out or stick straight up, but they can't fold flat in car or robot mode, they're not molded to do so and would snap if you tried to force them,
Springer always had all modes being at least decent, unlike the others where at least one mode was always...a victim of having to engineer three modes; Allen here unfortunately is kinda the broken streak; that car mode is a total joke and the heli needs a bigger cockpit to look right. And the robot mode is a tad too chunk, but that might just be bias off the Generations fig... Thaaaaat said, this is some good fun engineering!
Only thing out of place for me was that I kept wanting there to be an Autobot insignia right on his chest. I know, this is third party and if someone wants the Autobot or Decipticon insignias they can always buy the sticker sheets and slap them on.
Car mode looks like shit, but otherwise this is the best looking G1 Springer there is. His robot mode looks like it's straight out of the old comics. Also, in the cartoon Springer was pretty much the same size as Rodimus. But scale with Transformer figures is always screwed anyhow.
Hey Peaugh, another great review,but one question about Allen there but in robot mode can those tail sections fold in so those fins don't stick out. I know they are on hinges to fold in or out in his other 2 modes. That is the 1 thing that gets on my nerves about him cause he seems so sleek until you get to that.I really hope when I get mine sometimes this month or early next I plan on trying to fix that problem. So he's amazing and perfect... but he doesn't fit into a collection, he doesn't match other MP figures. So what's the point? I get he's a great toy, but he's marketed as an MP and you yourself say he doesn't fit. It's DX9 Gewalt all over again (and from the same parent company too!) To me this is yet another DX9 disappointment - so close but then so far off base. Drop him half an inch in height (and proportionately slimmer) and give him some more surface detailing and he'd be a maybe. Toyworld get grief for making stuff that's not quite MP (too tall Coneheads, weird versions of Springer and Kupetc ) and to me this is the same thing. Thanks for reviewing though. Masterpiece is going in the cartoon direction not that much detail. UT is making it more evident here . I would like to have him on a mp shelf but looks like he can go with that season 3 clan . Except mp hot rod.
My first impressions is that it is not a masterpiece style. When I saw MMC Sphinx or Fanstoys version of Hound they felt like masterpieces to me this does not.
why waste top dollar to purchase something that is already officially released? Okay, the Generations Springer isnt G-1 looking, but none of the generations do (exept the seekers and maybe arcee). the guy is big, huge.. but scale wise? dont mean to bash, bu why third party companies still do what they do when we get official products?
If you want something for a masterpiece shelf none of the Generations stuff scales properly. 3P makes these because as of this time, there is no official offering in this scale and G1 aesthetic (whether you like it or not).
He looks like a 70's styled Super Robot that doesn't transform. The fact that he can into TWO things is simply incredible.

He'd probably scale really well with MP-9 Rodimus. Doesn't look like he'd break too easily though, so they probably wouldn't get along.

They can fold to stick straight back, but they don't fold all the way flat against the back of the legs.

why waste top dollar to purchase something that is already officially released? Okay, the Generations Springer isnt G-1 looking, but none of the generations do (exept the seekers and maybe arcee). the guy is big, huge.. but scale wise?

If you want something for a masterpiece shelf none of the Generations stuff scales properly. 3P makes these because as of this time, there is no official offering in this scale and G1 aesthetic (whether you like it or not).
because maybe you want a version of a character that looks like they do in the comics, or its a lesser character that hasbro/takara won't make
MP version. He scales to that.
you'll agree sometimes the price tag is crazy, just like the 3rd party metroplex or scorponok.
the point of generations is to give a modern take on tf, which I welcome.

Generations looks like crap.
He looks ok on an IDW CHUG shelf, but doesn't have a place on an MP shelf. I don't know why people keep trying to compare this to the generations toy.
