With the relaxation protocol, my biggest struggle has been getting them to do anything other than wonder why we're separating ourselves or what's going on in the other room. I've finally had some success with our anxious pup (Ellie) in the mornings (we're on to day 3 tomorrow, yaaayy!!), but Twix keeps getting stuck about 2/3 of the way through day 1. He does great and then just refuses to even go into a down. And he's the one with the good recall. We keep trying though!
Hi! I am about to start this protocol with my dog. She has been with us for about 4 months she is approox 3 years. She is a bit tense and reactive. I have not been able to teach her "down" yet, can I still teach the protocol without her laying down?
This is day one for a fearful dog as I understand it. They working on a 15 day protocol I believe. Being in a corner can also help a fearful dog to become more open to the training to become more relaxed in general. If a dog is hyper and fearful all the time one has to start somewhere.
Is there a reason that she is so close to the wall? Is that better that dog is more “confined”? I tried this with my dog few times, but i put the matt in the middle of the room. Our problem is that he gets bored and stops being interested in food so we can’t ever finished the full exercise
It's probably about 9 minutes of training. For something more active, I'd absolutely keep it shorter. But for lying on a mat, duration is the goal, which necessarily means your sessions will be longer too! But it's all individual for each dog. I wouldn't have gone this long with your average 7-month-old lab :)
My dog goes insane about treats and food and will jump all over you for them. Also this dog seemed pretty chilled sitting at start of the video mine is never like this it’s all go all the time
You may want to play some more impulse control games and increase exercise in that case. If your dog can never relax it’s probably because their exercise needs aren’t being met.

I think that’s just the best a lot for the mat because of the camera angle!

What do you do if the dog starts pawing, scratching, biting, etc. at the mat?
Generally that would be a sign of raising criteria too quickly - making it too hard too fast. Try making it easier for a bit!

That was what I was going to ask. When do you start? Can I start right off the bat with an 8-9 week old puppy?
