- The Bhate siblings can easily be role models for other children of their age: they are eloquent, dedicated to academics, and pursue and excel in a host of sports and extra-curricular activities. What is inspirational about them is that they are both recipients of bilateral Cochlear implants. Maithili, now 15, was implanted at the age of 18 months. However, her parents realised that it was late, as it is difficult to get a child to develop speech once she is around 2 years old. Hence, they did not delay in getting Maithili's younger brother Samanyu checked, who was diagnosed with hearing loss when he was only 1 month old. The parents, doctors by profession, realised the importance of hearing with both ears and put their trust in Cochlear™ Nucleus® System, getting bilateral implants for their children.
Today, Maithili, with her prowess in classical music on the piano, and Samanyu, with his eloquence in 3 languages, have proved that timely and appropriate decisions made by parents can help children with hearing loss pursue their dreams and be a part of the mainstream society. How can she speak so clearly like normal ? Does she has a profound hearing loss or she can hear a little from the other ear ?
