Very well taught. Such a wonderful thing for mankind to have teachers on the internet giving their wisdom away for the rest of us. Very grateful. And Steve Stine is the very definition of what a teacher should be. Clear explanations with warmth.
Just wow! I'm 6 months playing now and unfortunately watched several CAGED videos offered by mere mortals and was about to smash my guitar...until you rode in glowing like Gandalf. Thanks Steve. That G sandwich on A and E bread is pure gold. (Tied in the 5th/6th string barre chords nicely.)
I wish youtube had this kind of videos 12 years ago when I started to play the guitar. I had to figure this thing out by myself after years of playing. Excellent lesson Steve!

I'm returning to the guitar at 40 and I know basic chords and a couple of scales. This video was very easy to understand even for a beginner. When you said about barring the fret you finish on, it clicked for me. Thanks.
I was following Steve for a long time. He is so clear. He is the best teacher in youtube, he took me out of years of ignorance. Thanks Steve. Jesus be with you.
bro I watched different tutorials about the CAGED system and they all confused me, you're the only one who made it very easy to understand! Thanks a lot! :D
@@HankStellae yea, I don't watch any other guitar lesson channels but Steve's Guitarzoom and Steve Stine guitar lesson. He has a way of making connections with me that no other online teacher has done before.

Was a little confused when you mentioned the barre chord shortcut method... But i have sorted it out... Whenever your are playing the 6th string barre chord, its actually the E shape and A shape in case of 5th string barre.... And can find out whats coming next according to the CAGED pattern !!! Cool ! Thanks Steve

The part which I'm not getting is the C formation... Like everytime Following CAGED... C formation comes up the note for example If we are playing all 5 positions of G.. the G formation E formation D formation.. till that I'm fine but when C formation comes up what I've noticed is that the G note in this case is not barred and barre is placed a fret earlier and the G note is used as the first note of the C formation which is different (9:28).. As in all other formations the G note is barred and then the other formation is played but C is exception and I'm not able to understand that
At about 6:15 Steve plays a basic C shape. From low to high, it's played like this: x 3 2 0 1 0 For the C shape barre chord at 9:28, Steve just moved that shape up the fretboard 1 octave, or 12 frets: x 15 14 12 13 12 That's the 2 places on a guitar where you can use the C shape to play a C chord. But you can move that shape anywhere to play different chords. This chord: x 5 4 2 3 2 Would be a D chord, for example. And it's pretty tough to play all those notes, so often that shape will be played like this, just leaving the high E string out: x 5 4 2 3 x With the G string note played with the tip of the index finger, just to make it easier to play the chord. When you move up the fretboard, frets get closer and closer together, so a chord shape that's easy to play above the 12th fret might be really tough to play the same way lower on the fretboard. Hope this helps! -- GuitarZoom Staff
I have a few questions, for the e shape c chord why do you only barre a fret above it when on the other chords you barre leaving a space for that chord shape and that barre? Also don’t you barre where the previous chord shape takes place?
Thanks for watching, Aya! :-) Just a heads-up, Steve’s new Fretboard Framework webinar is now available on-demand. Go here to check it out: guitarzoom.com/fretboardframework/webinar/registration/ You’ll discover… ✅ How to combine triads to create satisfying guitar solos. ✅ An easy 4 step method to ignite your soloing creativity so your solos don’t sound like a scale. ✅ How to break out of the pentatonic box and understand how to solo using your entire fretboard. ✅ And a few cool licks you’ll want to add to your arsenal. Be sure to check it out, and no matter what, keep playing! - Mike from GuitarZoom P.S. Go here to check out some free preview videos from Steve’s brand new Fretboard Framework course: www.guitarzoom.com/fretboardframework/promo-2/#videos
I sort of understand it, but im struggling with where to go with the next shape, its not always the root note , so say if you’re playing an ‘A’ chord , the root note is the open A string so where do you go with the A chord.. but with the G shape how many frets up do you go? 🤔
Remember, “CAGED” stands for the chord shapes. You can take each one of those chord shapes and move it up the fretboard to play more chords. Which means, you can use a C chord shape to play a D chord, an E chord, or any chord just by moving it up the fretboard. But these are “open” chords that use open strings, so you have to play them a little bit differently when you move the shapes up the fretboard. For example, the “A” in CAGED stands for the open A chord (low to high): x 0 2 2 2 0 Let’s say you want to use that A chord shape to play a B chord. All you have to do is move it up 2 frets. x 2 4 4 4 2 ...and you have to play that chord shape a little differently. You can play it with your first finger as a bar on the 2nd fret and your other 3 fingers on the rest of the strings. Or you can play it with your first finger on the 5th string, 2nd fret and your ring finger as a bar on the 4th fret. Either way, it’s easier to leave off the note on the high E string: x 2 4 4 4 x You can do the same thing to make an A chord with a G chord shape. With a G chord shape, it’s even tougher to play ALL the notes on all the strings. Because when you move that up 2 frets to get an A chord, you go from 3 2 0 0 0 3 to 5 4 2 2 2 5 ...and to play it like that, you have to stretch your index finger way back to make the bar on the 2nd fret, use your third finger to fret the 6th string, your middle finger to fret the 5th string, and your pinkie to fret the 1st string. It can be done… but it’s literally a pretty big stretch. :-) But here’s the thing: you don’t have to play all the strings at once. You can use fragments of that G chord shape to play a full A chord, like this 5 x 2 2 2 x ...with your first finger as a bar and your third finger on the 6th string. Or like this: x (0) 2 2 2 5 Since you’ve got that open A note, and this is an A chord, you could play the open 5th string also. But if you wanted to play a B chord with a G chord shape, you couldn’t play the open A string. x x 4 4 4 7 Just remember, the letters in CAGED stand for chord shapes. And you move those chord shapes up the fretboard to create new chords. Hope this helps! -- GuitarZoom Staff

I'm returning to the guitar at 40 and I know basic chords and a couple of scales. This video was very easy to understand even for a beginner. When you said about barring the fret you finish on, it clicked for me. Thanks.
Now I understand the CAGED system..THIS IS THE BEST EXPLANATION
I was following Steve for a long time.
He is so clear.
He is the best teacher in youtube, he took me out of years of ignorance.
Thanks Steve.
Jesus be with you.
Great lesson. Shared with my nephew who is learning. CAGED and scales. Great way to learn to play with other people.

Like angus young said that's there big mistake is to keep making it harder, because it's the same once you get the basic idea,
I salute you!
Amazing,
Thank you sir!
From low to high, it's played like this:
x 3 2 0 1 0
For the C shape barre chord at 9:28, Steve just moved that shape up the fretboard 1 octave, or 12 frets:
x 15 14 12 13 12
That's the 2 places on a guitar where you can use the C shape to play a C chord.
But you can move that shape anywhere to play different chords. This chord:
x 5 4 2 3 2
Would be a D chord, for example. And it's pretty tough to play all those notes, so often that shape will be played like this, just leaving the high E string out:
x 5 4 2 3 x
With the G string note played with the tip of the index finger, just to make it easier to play the chord. When you move up the fretboard, frets get closer and closer together, so a chord shape that's easy to play above the 12th fret might be really tough to play the same way lower on the fretboard.
Hope this helps!
-- GuitarZoom Staff
thank u from philippines
I have a few questions, for the e shape c chord why do you only barre a fret above it when on the other chords you barre leaving a space for that chord shape and that barre? Also don’t you barre where the previous chord shape takes place?
Great.
Look it chuck berry uses A major scale where you will find G# note and F note, how many sharps are in the key of A 3
Thanks!
Thanks for watching, Aya! :-)

U explained well
I like it.
Ok.. so the only acoustic I have is a 12 string. Do you have any tips on how to finger it and get it clean clear and precise?
First class teacher.
For example, the “A” in CAGED stands for the open A chord (low to high):
x 0 2 2 2 0
Let’s say you want to use that A chord shape to play a B chord. All you have to do is move it up 2 frets.
x 2 4 4 4 2
...and you have to play that chord shape a little differently. You can play it with your first finger as a bar on the 2nd fret and your other 3 fingers on the rest of the strings. Or you can play it with your first finger on the 5th string, 2nd fret and your ring finger as a bar on the 4th fret.
Either way, it’s easier to leave off the note on the high E string:
x 2 4 4 4 x
You can do the same thing to make an A chord with a G chord shape. With a G chord shape, it’s even tougher to play ALL the notes on all the strings. Because when you move that up 2 frets to get an A chord, you go from
3 2 0 0 0 3
to
5 4 2 2 2 5
...and to play it like that, you have to stretch your index finger way back to make the bar on the 2nd fret, use your third finger to fret the 6th string, your middle finger to fret the 5th string, and your pinkie to fret the 1st string. It can be done… but it’s literally a pretty big stretch. :-)
But here’s the thing: you don’t have to play all the strings at once. You can use fragments of that G chord shape to play a full A chord, like this
5 x 2 2 2 x
...with your first finger as a bar and your third finger on the 6th string. Or like this:
x (0) 2 2 2 5
Since you’ve got that open A note, and this is an A chord, you could play the open 5th string also. But if you wanted to play a B chord with a G chord shape, you couldn’t play the open A string.
x x 4 4 4 7
Just remember, the letters in CAGED stand for chord shapes. And you move those chord shapes up the fretboard to create new chords.
Hope this helps!
-- GuitarZoom Staff
great explanation.
Clearly understand!
Thank you so much, Steve.
very interesting. hey steve what model ovation r u playing? thanks
Steve what was your next video with this method as it pertains to the pentatonic boxes. That would tie it all together. Thanks
