This song is dedicated to my Mother who on Friday passed away at the age of 58 after her 6 month battle with Cancer. Thank you Mum for believing in me and I’ll see you in the next life. ❤️
I didn't shave as John at all for the first part of the epilogue so when he got into his outfit I instantly returned to shave and look more like the OG Marston, but that ended the song as soon as the words "Cruel cruel world" were sung. I fucked up.
My first experience with "That's the Way It Is" was interrupted by Arthur veering off path into a river. The music immediately halted... as did all of his flashbacks, memories and thoughts of the people in his life; one of the most emotional, if not THE most emotional moment in the game, and it just got cut off. I knew I was missing something, so I reloaded an auto-save and did the last mission with Sadie a second time. I'm so glad I did.
Lots of games I play stick with me. But this game, and everything about it, will stick with me till the end. This game, for some reason, had just had a huge impact on me, more than most games. Truly, a masterpiece, and proof that video games really can be art.

Red Dead Redemption 2 : Cruel Cruel World by Willie Nelson Grand Theft Auto V: Whiskey River by Willie Nelson Grand Theft Auto San Andreas: Crazy by Willie Nelson
Cruel, cruel world, must I go on? Gavin? Cruel, cruel world, I'm moving on Has anyone seen my friend? I've been living too fast Gavin!!!! And I've been living too long ...he's my best friend. He left me... I lost him... Cruel, cruel world, I'm gone He's a charming sort of chap! Cruel, cruel world, I'm moving on ... Gavin?
I ran into Nigel in 1907 as John. He looked very bad and disheveled. I hogtied him and looted him. The letter from Tom to Nigel helps explain what probably happened to Gavin. Poor Nigel, the chap's gone daft.
ThwartedVillainy mentioned, no. But his presence is wrapped up into the entire RD1 story. John learned from Arthur that family is all that matters, and sometimes you have to sacrifice it all for them. Arthur also gave John the chance to enjoy a life that so few outlaws got to experience, if only for a short time
Casey Jones Including Spotify, I have yet to find a musical platform that has an official rdr2 soundtrack to listen to or purchase. If Rockstar ever plans to release it, I would be willing to buy it in a heartbeat as well. Perhaps they’ll do it once they have rdr online up and running. 🤞🏼
@@stevemiller42 Check Rockstars Twitter, they tweeted that the soundtrack would be coming soon around the time of the game coming out. Instant buy for me too
My cousin was a massive rdr fan he died 4 days ago and this is the song he listened to the most so we played it at his funeral today and here i am RIP Isaac your the brother i never had
I got goosebumps watching the old John Marston attire debut; the first RDR was and is one of my favorite games of all time, but RDR2... I gotta say Arthur showed me such humanity that by the end I found myself tearing up on 3 separate occasions. And that is why I have to admit that in this rare case, the sequel was better than the original ride through Armadillo.
This is one of my favorite moments in the game. After so long of stuff going wrong, it feels like john is gonna fix his life and things are finally looking up
This was my favorite song of the game. As it came on when John is riding it was a good but sad vibe knowing what happens to him and Arthur is gone. They were good men in a cruel world I know it’s just a game but it was a damn good one. Maybe it’s cause I can relate I’m not sure.
They weren't good men though. That's the real beauty of these games. We are rooting for horrible men who are trying to change. But in the end both were evil because they grew up in a cruel world.
The realistic thing about red dead is it's portrayal of morality. Most often in life things are grey, not black or white. Other games and stories have accomplished this as well to some degree but red dead nails it imo. You DO play as "bad" men. In context to the narrative of the story and it's characters, a life of crime was all they knew in a country that was already unforgiving and lawless at the time. At the very least the frontier and western territories were hard living where most resorted to crime while living amongst an already small population that struggled everyday with law abiding duties. That does not justify they're actions but instead compel them. In the end, Arthur and John repent from the lives they lived and realized what they've done is wrong and therefore try to make things whole and right they're wrongs. In doing so they redeem themselves. They find redemption for the lives they lived, however insignificant that may or may not be. So one could argue that they are good men indeed. What makes a man good? Doing what is right? What if I kill a man to protect my family? Was I right to take the mans life? Or steal a fish to feed my child? Was I right to steal the fish? Proverbs 24:16 For though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes.
SPOILER WARNING Possibly the saddest part of the game is when Arthur's says to his horse at the end of his story "Thank you" as its dying, that hit me deep.
[Chorus] Cruel, cruel world, must I go on? Cruel, cruel world, I'm moving on I've been living too fast And I've been living too wrong Cruel, cruel world, I'm gone [Verse 1] This big ol' world sure got me running 'round I heard a voice that said, "Just settle down" And with the moonlight as my guide And with this feeling deep inside I know now that I am homeward bound [Chorus] Cruel, cruel world, must I go on? Cruel, cruel world, I'm moving on I've been living too fast And I've been living too wrong Cruel, cruel world, I'm gone [Guitar Solo] [Verse 2] Desert roads, desert plains I have seen so much pain Now I see into the eyes of a girl No more, no more, cruel world [Chorus] Cruel, cruel world, must I go on? Cruel, cruel world, I'm moving on I've been living too fast And I've been living too wrong Cruel, cruel world, I'm gone [Guitar Solo] [Verse 3] Dusty trail, saw vapor light Was it a mirage? I don't know, but it seemed right I felt mission, I felt trust I knew then that I must Must go to her from this cruel world [Chorus] Cruel, cruel world, must I go on? Cruel, cruel world, I'm moving on I've been living too fast And I've been living too wrong Cruel, cruel world, I'm gone [Guitar Solo] [Chorus] Cruel, cruel world, must I go on? Cruel, cruel world, I'm moving on I've been living too fast And I've been living too wrong Cruel, cruel world, I'm gone Cruel, cruel world, I'm gone
Got straight chills when I heard this song in game. The events that preceded it didn't truly hit me until this song was played for that ride. Thank you so much for posting such a great sounding version.
Yeah the Pronghorn Ranch "arc" kinda sucked, especially the mission where you raid the other farm. But the ride into Blackwater to buy Beecher's Hope is one of my all-time favorite moments from any work of fiction.
You know my son he's 6yrs and he seen me cry when Arthur and his horse died im not ashamed of it I did cry . Every night no lie when we say our prayers he says good night Arthur i love you. Love that kid
When this plays in RDR 2 it was one of the best gaming moments I've experienced in a long, long time. And right after John walks out of his cabin in his RDR 1 outfit and you hear the little music sting from the first game. HOLY SHIT this game is so good.
I played the game, and I became so attached to Arthur, that when he did tuberculosis, I looked everywhere in the game, how I could cure him, at some point, I gave up, but when I arrived at the mission with Eagle Flies, he gave me herbs , I thought maybe he was saving him somehow. RIP Arthur Morgan
Only antibiotics can cure Tuberculosis, and they weren't discovered yet at the time, and the guy who discovered them(Alexander Fleming) was in his early 20s working at a shipping office. The best the herbs could do was ease the pain. Though said disease could re-emerge due to superbugs, but we still have phages, who are very efficient at killing bacteria.
The epilogue chapter where John leaves Proghorn and builds Beachers hope is one of my favorite. Killing Micah at the end was just the cherry on top. Atleast Arthur's sacrifice gave the Marston family another decade to live, but like John says "Nothing gets forgotten"
This song was sung so wonderfully by Mr nelson. Riding on my horse and enjoying nature I was just swepped away with a feeling of relief and happiness i wish I could relive it.
When this song started playing, I swear it was the greatest moment in gaming history for me. Galloping through the woods to Willy Nelson. There is and never will be a more beautiful and more pure moment of my gaming life.
I stopped dead in my tracks when I realized "That's damn Willie Nelson!" And I was happy all my sadness I'd felt before just disappeared not gone but for that moment I felt good. This is a classic game I will remember for a damn long time just like I did for the first Red Dead Redemption.
I heard it at first and then said “hold up I recognise that voice” and sure enough it was Willie Nelson. I was so happy, Willie Nelson is one of the greatest ever.
Psionic B Willie Nelson is one of those Classic Country Singers that posses the ability to make you feel “happily sad” and they will never exist again.
Seriously I can’t put into words what a masterpiece of popular culture this game is. The music, story, characters. The ability it has to make you laugh and cry is unreal. A true masterpiece. Just finished my second play through since release, cried like a baby again. Love it.

A masterpiece of a game in every possible way. The gameplay is phenomenal, and the writing is on the same level as Metal Gear. I miss being able to swim without drowning in 2 seconds in this game.
This is the exact reference I had for my feelings here. As soon as this part came on I got this feeling I haven’t had since playing something like MGS3
This is the first game I’ve played where the story actually messed me up. After Arthur’s death, when John rides off to get the loan for the ranch, and this started playing, I honestly cried.
It really is. Knowing that whatever you decide to do in the game, no matter how many people you save, how much money you make, how much you build up your camp and keep morale high... it's all for nothing in the end. It's all a sham.
My dog of 9 years passed away yesterday and my dad said for some reason he said this song was playing in his head as we buried or friend. Rest in Peace Duke, we’re moving on for you buddy
There’s another clean version of this song on TH-cam put them both on a playlist and nothin else and put the playlist on repeat and they’ll play all night I’m a mobile user and this is what I did haha
Hosea and Arthur are picking mangoes in Tahiti, and Lenny and Sean are drinking. Miss Grimshaw’s there with Kieran and Hamish is fishing by the ocean. And Buell is there too. That’s heaven.
I can relate to this song so much, as I'm sure alot of you fellow gamers can. Thank you rockstar for blessing us with one of the biggest masterpieces ever made. Outlaws forever.
I didn't cry at the ending, but there's a couple spots in the epilogue where they talk about Arthur in the past tense. THAT got me. That was a HORRIBLE feeling. I spent all that time with him and died with him... and then not a SECOND later, it's just right into this new story, YEARS later. Like Arthur was a side character in his own death, and the world just instantly and rapidly moved on without him and hearing him talked about in such a casual way. It was like seeing my own loved ones talk about me after I was dead, but I could somehow still witness it. Maybe I'm just in midlife crisis mode. This type of thing never bothered me until recently.
My grandfather died today. He was 72 and really liked the wild west. We used to watch bonanza together, he played some of this game but never finished it. He traveled to world and had a full life. I wish i could just talk to him one more time
This song reminds me about the first time I played RDR2. Although it plays around the end of the game, when I listen to it, I get a sensation and remember what it was like opening this game and playing it, and I haven’t gotten that feeling playing a new game since then. Such a fresh, crisp, and overall great game. Had a blast playing it and am still having fun, having gotten every achievement for it and 100% completion. There’s always something more to discover. If there is any game that deserves game of the year/decade, it’s this one. Amazing character development, story, and everything else.
Most favorite game, finished it 3 times and never gets old, i cry everytime everyone died especially Arthur 😢 love the songs they picked out for this game too
When this song started playing I tried my hardest not to hit anything while I was just galloping around and I can proudly say I hit nothing and I heard this song all the way to the end
My grandfather was a country dude. Cowboy type he kept and trained western pleasure horses. Always watched westerns, read novels. I wish he could have seen this game.
My elder cat passed away right around the time I hand finished this game - around the time I had heard this song. It had made me happy to hear her cries for life with this song. Her acceptance. My acceptance. She’s a lovely little lady. ❤️
For anyone interested, throw a capo on third fret and play bluesy variants of D, A, and G. Just pick around the regular major chords till it sounds bluesy like Willie and there ya go, merry Christmas.
2 songs that just bring a smile to my face: Building a House, and this song. The reasons, building a house as John Marston made Arthur's trials and sacrifices feel worth it...and this song, because it just felt so damn good to see that familiar John Marston riding again, hitting that dusty trail with John Marston is just one of those things that brings me joy.
I kept the same horse the entire story. It was the horse you buy in one of the story missions early on. It sucked amazingly at speed and maneuverability but it was my baby. I played the story for over a month, on and off. I developed a special connection with him. RIP Constantine.
After the absolute rollercoaster of a story you’ve just been through with a sad ending; then just riding back to Blackwater with John in the epilogue whilst this music plays. This part definitely hit home for me.
amen...thats the point...love the way all this guys(the ones who made the game) make you feel like living in a Sam Peckinpah movie...but after all the suffer and struggle comes Willie..and hope at last...masterpiece...
Thank you for this, i know i'm not the only one who lost someone in 2018 but my pa passed in October 2018 and he loved classic stuff like this we used to drive in the country and when i saw this song i couldn't help but cry this song brings back the good memories thank you

I ran into Nigel in 1907 as John. He looked very bad and disheveled. I hogtied him and looted him. The letter from Tom to Nigel helps explain what probably happened to Gavin. Poor Nigel, the chap's gone daft.
Arthur Morgan was born a legend and died a legend and so did his horse
And yet, he wasn't mentioned once in RDR1. I guess legends fade quickly.

I had tears rolling down my face as I played and this song accompanied John back on the road.
The sick ride, the horse and Arthur's death? :( 3 times for me too brother..
Can’t swim, can’t herd.
But armadillo is so dead in RDR 2 and online, nothing like RDR 1 armadillo

This was my favorite song of the game. As it came on when John is riding it was a good but sad vibe knowing what happens to him and Arthur is gone. They were good men in a cruel world
I know it’s just a game but it was a damn good one. Maybe it’s cause I can relate I’m not sure.
They weren't good men though. That's the real beauty of these games. We are rooting for horrible men who are trying to change. But in the end both were evil because they grew up in a cruel world.
Androidbrotherhood1 good men in a cruel world. That’s all. They weren’t horrible men
The storyline is the best I’ve ever seen in a video game.
It IS because you can relate. It's a testament to how good the story is and it's characters. I feel the same way friend :)
Proverbs 24:16
For though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes.

Tuberculosis was a death sentence in 1899, like getting cancer. The point is that modern vaccines save lives.
damn Biscuit so did I I was really hoping it would help but when Arthur had that last ride I knew his time was coming and I started tearing up
Only antibiotics can cure Tuberculosis, and they weren't discovered yet at the time, and the guy who discovered them(Alexander Fleming) was in his early 20s working at a shipping office.
The best the herbs could do was ease the pain.
Though said disease could re-emerge due to superbugs, but we still have phages, who are very efficient at killing bacteria.
TB back then = stage 4 cancer today
But in the end everyone from 1899 is dead now, both fictional and real. And we'll all be dead before long, too. Leave a mark while you're here!
