This reminds me of the Swiss watch brands figuring out they are popular in China, then making special Chinese editions in red and with dragons etc. while the Chinese loved and bought the Swiss watches for their Swissness, in design and appearance..

I think it's good that Patek are putting out designs that look more casual and sporty for their dress watch line ups. It's to lure people away from Nautilus and Aquanauts. If there are people who don't like it, that means it's different, which is good. These watches would look great with a T-shirt and jeans. But a classic calatrava would look weird in the same outfit.

Interesting discussion. It’s indeed a delicate balance that Patek is trying to strike between being fresh and being traditional. I remember reading in a book or article somewhere that in the old days, think 60s-90s, the word trendy is a forbidden word in Mercedes Benz design. They aimed to create designs that are above contemporary trends of the time and one could argue that’s the reason why old Mercs stay looking good for a long time.

    • @Mike.thiswatchthatwatch

I think Patek customers are correct in expecting a hand decorated dial, and this stamped effort is clearly a cost saving process that degrades the brand. My main objection is the choice of case material. This would be so much better in a stainless steel case that better captures the sportiness and everyday usability of the watch. They could also significantly reduce the price in S/S that would attract more younger buyers.

Your video is incredibly insightful and thoughtful, with a but….
The but is people’s personal design language often changes over time as they progress in their watch collection journey. Yes this watch is not the typical Patek that most collectors have come to know and love. And yes, Patek is expanding their already broad lineup to go after a younger audience. Or is it a younger audience? And this is the but…
Having been a collector of Patek for about two decades, and with those years spent collecting more classic Patek watches, I have realized something. My tastes in watches has evolved. I still very much love my more classic Patek’s. Yet I desire more bold designs now. I enjoy watches with more color. I appreciate risk taking in watch design.
This evolving design language has lead me to other brands. Brands I otherwise would not of considered because Patek did not historically create bold and progressive designs. Yet I love my Patek’s and want Patek to take risks!
Prior to watching this video, I would have struggled to contemplate a 6007G, or even one of the very loud precious gemstone Nautilus or Aquanauts. But having had this discusión with numerous collectors recently, having added more modern design pieces from other brands to my collection, and then watching this video just now, I have realized I need to give Patek the benefit for the doubt. I need to follow my design language and trust Patek with some of their modern pieces.
So as I type this, I am concluding I am adding one to my collection!

I often wondered when the law of diminishing returns kick in when considering fit, finish, and accuracy. Not sure anyone needs to spend anything more than Rolex at retail unless you appreciate the hand finished movements. Other than that, Rolex 10k-15k gives you everything you need especially with accuracy. My Rolexes are the most accurate movements I have ever seen in mechanical watches. I set my Rolex Explorer 40mm to a reference time 6 months ago and the watch is +7 seconds. I hate sounding like a Rolex fan boy but they produce almost the perfect watch for their retail price.

This resonated a lot with me, thank you. I am not buying a PP in the very near future, but it is quite likely that I will be there in a few years from now. The idea of my "having made it" watch is a classy, masterfully made but discrete and timeless one. PP with their history and their stance as pinnacle of watchmaking to me would be the ultimate brand, but looking at their catalogue I cannot point to a model variant and declare it my grail. There simple Calatravas (which to me make the brand along with their complicated chronographs) have grown to 40mm (which is too large for me a dress watch). In smaller sizes they are blingy, diamonds everywhere and else designwise utterly feminine. I do not know if I would want to go vintage for a 2526/5196/5227, probably not, I will probably look elsewhere...

I like your take and it’s an interesting video. I personally quite like the watch, I like the red one because the colours kinda match my logo which means something to me. Maybe one day!
The one thing I don’t get it is why anyone is looking at brands like Patek and VC etc are judging their watches on things like power reserve compared to Omega? It’s the equivalent of writing off a Rolls Royce because it’s MPG compared poorly to Audi. Power reserve is irrelevant to a watch collector, someone spending this money on a watch like this doesn’t have one watch that they take off on Friday and want to put back on Monday, if they did they’d buy a water proof one I’d guess and not a delicate Patek dressed down dress watch?
I think it’s intentionally younger and divisive as a result. I don’t think it’s particularly trendy at all. It’s just a sportier looking dress watch, the overall design is timeless enough. It looks like watches of old but with a splash of colour and a bit of pattern. They got the same accusations when the introduced a Pilots watch with no history of making Pilots watches. It didn’t suit their existing audience so much, but it did suit plenty of people and it’s a beautiful watch.
Staying in their lane making old man watches would not seem a good long term play for Patek either. A few watches that appeal to different eyes to get new customers in or to offer something “out there” to existing collectors is not a bad watch idea to me. A watch that appeals to some eyes and not others similarly seems better than a plain dull reinvention of the same Calatrava my Great Grandad could have worn.
It’s also not a bad idea for Patek owners to have something a little different. If you were lucky enough to have a Nautilus, Aquanaut, Calatrava and maybe a manual chrono or Annual Calendar. Maybe this watch appeals to that collector something different in their collection. There are people out there with 4plus Patek’s and to have something novel in Patek’s catalogue and a completely different look for those people is no bad thing either.
Let’s face it, for some people (not me) the Calatrava is the watch you buy first to allow you to buy the ones you really want later from the AD. A slightly sportier calatrava maybe offers a more palatable gateway to an Aquanaut etc down the line than a watch you might only way for special occasions and not every day.

Iam not a Patek buyer but Ive tried this model and the hobnail calatrava in a wonderfully accomodating Patek boutique in Thailand. Obviously none were for sale but I was able to try many watches. My taste would be for the 6119 but if I was to buy one that day I would choose the sporty unPatek Patek 6007. I could wear it more often and its casual look and racing design cues speaks more to a casual lifestyle vs the much prettier but always dressy 6119. So maybe they are appealing to non Patek buyers. The grey market prices show that its working.

  • @teamredgutz399
    @teamredgutz399 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

I can’t say I agree with this very well thought out review. The reality of buying Pateks at the AD is that they basically force you to buy a Calatrava before they will sell you anything else.
The problem that I have is, I do not like almost any of the watches in the Calatrava collection. I find them to be extremely plain and boring.
But I like a bunch of the PP Complication and Grand Complication watches, as well as some of the Nautilus and Aquanaut collection.
This particular watch at least represents a Calatrava that I would buy and is more appealing to me than the more staid, conservative other watches in the Calatrava collection.
I’m actually quite into car racing and I enjoy the look of this watch. That being said, at this price point given and given this is a Holy Trinity brand, PP should never have stamped the dial and that’s really a cost cutting way to cheap out. But other than that, I don’t think this was a mistake for them to produce this watch. This watch is the way for them to get people to buy the Calatrava, who otherwise wouldn’t.

You have a fair perspective. I have to admit that I've moved position ever so slightly as to what Patek is doing. The more they release, the more it becomes clear that the calatrava line is being modernised and turned into a much more youthful, non-dressy watch aiming for a younger audience... For the studio underdog and nomos crowd but in a higher income bracket 😊

@@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch correct. If they want to attract the next generation of collectors and they’re making the Calatrava the gateway watch to get anything else, they need to have a few that would appeal to people who don’t like super conservative watches. The 6007G is that watch. The 5226G is in the spirit as well. Still, at that price point and being a Patek, the dial of the 6007G should not be stamped.
For example, I’m not that much into most of the Vacheron Constantin watches but I do love the look of the Overseas collection and I have a stainless steel blue dial Overseas chronograph and my wife has an ice blue dial Overseas as well. Most of the other collections do nothing for me.

Saw them in Watches and Wonders, and I find them stunning. I personally like the red one. To me, it is entering something with a slightly new design language, while still being classy in its own way. Patek defines who they are, not collectors. ALS collectors also rejected the Zeitwerk in 2009, this is not ALS! Yes, it was. You just need to be open-minded to new things.

When a watch costs as much as a car, I choose the car. But I will dream of the watch for a couple of weeks. Eventhough I have plenty of money in the bank, to retire, no debt, own multiple homes, I just would rather spend my money on other things and vacation trips. But most of all, I don't draw more pleasure by spending a lot of money on watches. A little goes a long way, but more doesn't give me more pleasure. Maybe I'm just cheap. I think I'm being wise.

The car more often depreciates. A watch can be a store of value (not an investment). If you have your real investments in tax free (or tax incentivised) wrappers like an ISA and a SIPP in the uk then spending on a watch with some that’s left over can be more appealing than buying a car that depreciates or costs a lot more to maintain if it’s a classic car.

The white Date window may look like a dissonance in the dial, but it sort of gives certain symmetry in the dial... But this definitely looks like a Patek equivalent of "Hello fellow kids..."

I never thought Patek would be offering their own versions of a Seiko 5, yet here we are. However, I'm not young with more money than taste, so I'm not the target audience (just kidding for those that like the watch, but it's not my style). I think they're looking at brands like AP for inspiration to hook new and younger customers. Maybe we'll soon see grand complications with enameled Batman and Superman. The "sporty" and more eye-catching Calatravas might also explain Patek's new crop of very iced-out Instagram watches.
Nevertheless, if people are buying it, who am I to judge. That's capitalism. I'd just be happy if they shrank down some of their classic offerings to the more reasonable sizes of past years. Both types of styles can exist in Patek's catalog at once.
Lastly, I additionally recall in an W&W 2023 interview Theirry Stern mentioning how he was slowly bringing his two sons into the business to eventually pass it on. The new Pateks might their influence.

Think of Porsche when they first came out SUVs. How very un-Porsche, yes?
But today, the Cayenne is doing extremely well.
The mindset of the customer changed. The customer changed. They grew older and had kids.
Porsche did not want to allow the customer $ to go to another brand. They did not want the customer to have a 911 and Volvo type SUV. They want the customer to have BOTH the 911 and a Cayenne.
I believe Patek is doing the same thing here. And they are dipping their horological toes into the cool-pool. For both the first-time patek buyers as well as the existing patek customers, they are offering an alternative to yet “another conservative piece”.
I believe they have their sights on existing AP customers that have become bored with royal oaks.

As a holy trinity brand, arguably the ‘best’ watch brand, you must retain class, a timelessness (if you forgive the pun), a sophistication, that transcends fashion and era; the watch equivalent of the E-type, the Routemaster, the K6, the Kenwood Chef, Concorde, etc., design across generations if you like, whilst modernising and continually improving the production, the parts, the tech underlying the design.
