Sure wish I would have picked one of these up when they were available, really like the color scheme. Ended up getting a carbon print SE when my old X9D died but so wish I would have pulled the trigger on this one. Nice review
I bought the 'carbon fibre' version of the SE at Christmas. Obviously it's a different colour, the upgraded switches don't have the silicon sleeves and there's no stand. But otherwise it's the same thing, so you're paying £70 extra to have Steele's name on it.
It looks so much better without the stickers for sure, and the stock switches on the taranis suck they are hollow and break off constantly after a good amount of flips. For 70 it's honestly worth it with all the upgrades it comes with especially the sma mod which is a nice upgrade for sure :)
Hey mate! Isn't the included adapter used to convert our usual RP-SMA antennas to SMA, in order to fit on the mrSteele X9D Tx? I thought that the mrSteele edition comes with an SMA connector and an SMA antenna (instead of RP-SMA as in the SE version).
All that extra money and what you're actually getting is just some nice gimbals, the antenna mod and some fancy aesthetics. They didn't even bundle in a decent battery and the fact that they put the bloody thing together without the stickers on is laughable. So much for it coming with "all the mods that he'd do anyways". Don't get me wrong, I like steele and his vids but christ this is some fanboy exploitation. I'll stick with my regular taranis and keep making it to how I want it. Then it's not 1 of 500, it's 1 of 1 lol.
Steele was one of the first people I watched on TH-cam doing quad stuff. If you paid yourself time and bought the upgrades then his price makes sense from a time invested point of view. I like the color. I won’t be purchasing the radio but I know he has enough fans and the mods are logical in my opinion that they will be bought. The antenna mod has been responsible for damaging many radios. This insures that someone wanting the mod won’t be buying a second radio because they screwed up.
I sold my I year old Taranis and bought this one mainly for the upgrades that I didn't have to do. I'd done the M9 Hall Gimbals but didn't want to tackle the antenna mod. A buddy of mine got the SE version around Christmas and I was impressed with the antenna mod and the ability to use a 5dbi antenna, which did.make a pretty good difference.
My old X9D+ doesn't have the Hall Effect gimbals and is still running Open TX v2.0.9, which is what it came with about 5 yrs ago. Still works great, but I did break off the momentary toggle (trainer) switch on the top right when it slid off my car seat, out the door and onto the pavement. Felt gutted at the time, but, since I never use that switch, I've gotten over it. Not sure that this version is worth an extra $150 over a 'plain Jane' version .. all up to the buyer I guess.

Please forgive me if the follow has been addressed but is there a way you could do a video that shows how to upgrade the firmware in such a way as to NOT screw with ones setting i.e. "Amber". The last time I tried to upgrade I could not use Amber call outs so I just gave up!
It's been a while since I've attempted as it's such a hassle but you may have obviated a point. Someone must have made the sound files "Version specific" so I'll give it a go again. It's funny in that with this radio, much like ones cell phone it is a very "Personal" thing and when I get my radio "just right" I don't want to mess it up. Thanks for your kind direction! b
Yah, it's always a cost/benefit analysis for me. It hampers my ability to not be able to tune an XSR and some functionality of my GPS is reduced. No biggie. I swear to you, about a year ago i literally broke out into a sweat when "Amber" failed to do proper call outs. WHAT? Yepper, Accum's Razor is what I live by. Brian B search opentx university amber v2.2. They have an Amber sound pack rearranged for v2.2. I have no experience with it so don’t know if it is complete. The stock sounds from OpenTX are much better as well and sound great.
The selection buttons (along the screen) on my Taranis continue to come loose requiring me to open the case and re-attach them. Has any thing been done to beef up these buttons on this version? Thanks for the great review.

You can buy the kit to upgrade an older version of the radio to have the same kind of SMA style connector. See the screen shot in the video. Hope that helps

I would pay $490 for a bigger radio with at least 10 more switches and channels. To me it's all about the number of easily accessible switches and the many things one can do with more switches and channels.
I am not a fan of Mr Steele but I must give him credit for being an awesome pilot. Disrespecting him is childish. Not liking him is every persons option. Flying quads I have NO USE for all the switches. I was a fan of the Turnigy but the gimbals are already sticky and I am REALLY happy with my Taranis QX7S. WHAT I REALLY WANT AND WILL PURCHASE AT ANY PRICE ,,,built in internet wifi bluetooth .

The OpenTX Community has a lot of Pilot Support. Painless360 is one of the best resources out there, I've learned tons about the Taranis Radio from his videos.

Meh. Right now on HorusRC is a whole package for about 100 bucks. So, stock radio and all the bells and whistles for less than this radio. Stand is 5 bucks.

just brought a standard frsky x9d plus and brought some rubber covers for the switches and i find its mustard, good review thow thanx

Seems great. But my qx7 serves me nicely. The only thing missing is a nice case for it.

The sound files are OpenTX version specific so do need to be updated on the SD card too.. Hope that helps..

It looks very plasticky, I prefer his custom one. The coat looks much better on it. But otherwise, good to see the better SMA connector.

That's one of the stickers that comes with it.
