Great totem Tuesday :) I love puffins and their squat little figures. The bit about abandonment in my opinion is to do with the need for independent learning - being able to form your own understanding if the world from a young age and being able to survive the harsh environment around you. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. ( also maybe why the puffin is an icon for books and learning :) )
I also thought of the concept of attachment in psychology - a securely attached child knows that their parent will return and feels safe when they aren't around, an insecurely attached child would interpret absence as abandonment. That's a very simplified version obviously but it leapt to mind as soon as Laura mentioned the parents "abandoning" the chicks.
Love this series, and this particular video. Late night on Animal Planet, they sometimes play a video on puffins, and how their young sometimes lose their way and end up on an island where small children find them and look after them until they're strong enough to be set free again. Search 'puffin - animal planet fill in.avi' here on TH-cam, it's such a lovely video.

Thank you for this!! I've loved puffins ever since I was little. I didn't realize they pick lifetime mates--that's wonderful!! :)

I wish you would do a video on the bat.
Love this! It's nice to re-think this idea of totems; not everything has to be a wolf or raven (no offense if these are your totems) ;)
Yes BlackIDove it's nice to look at all animals as they are all awesome! :)
