    They make it look so easy but I know it's one of the hardest things in the world. In elementary school, I remember the girls would challenge the boys to try and it was just too hard for all of us. This is truly an art form that takes skill and precision.

    Growing up in Brooklyn, NY in the late 1940s I clearly remember watching with awe and amazement, young black girls doing incredible double dutch rope skipping in the street. In those days of de-facto segregation, the white neighborhood and black neighborhood were divided by one street. These were the days before play dates and scripted after school activities. We were regularly sent out to the street to play where we spent many unsupervised hours. We would often stand on the street that was the dividing line and watch the (mostly) girls our age (7 to about 13 years old) doing their amazing double dutch routines with the greatest of ease. No one on the white side of the dividing line ever attempted this sport. We wouldn't even have known how to begin.

      amycello They did. Don't you just hate the shit that our lives had to put up with? Damn, we were kids. I'm talking south. It was probably better than northerners wanted to admit, back then. As kids, our parents housed and loved us all. Parents down here cared about their kid's friends and their families. Good year for Mom, Dad; was good year for us all. ViceVerca! It's the children that mean the most!

    I remember doing this (white girl here) back in 1969 early 70s and singing Kamalamea Beast Day and other soul music while we jumped during school recess. A bunch of Catholic school girls practicing cultural misappropriation! Became the foundation of my love for soul, funk, blues and African music.

    • @azizip171
      @azizip171 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi MyBadCats, I'm an African American female who grew up in the 1950s/1960s and I never learned how to jump double dutch. Also, I couldn't turn double dutch ropes worth a darn :o(
      My guess is that "Kamalamea Beast Day" in your comment refers to the rhyme/song that is called "Cumala Vista", Flea Fly Flow", "The Bee Sting" and other titles. Thanks for sharing that. I didn't know that song was used for double dutch jumping. You mentioned your race and the decades. Where was this?
      Also, I wouldn't call White girls jumping double dutch and/or singing double dutch songs (or any other R&B/Hip Hop songs) for their own entertainment to be cultural appropriation.

      clash5j Asians are very get at copying something and then making it better than the original. Take for instance when they start speaking African languages they speak it better than the natives themselves. I am like what?? That is how good they are when they pick up on something. Hahahaha

      @@eustace8520 I am just talking from my own experience and observation. I maybe wrong and so I stand corrected. I have seen more videos of Asians on YT and FB videos speaking African languages and Arabic than other racial groups. Take for example this Chinese speaking Swahili in China. th-cam.com/video/qk5I9U_2KY0/w-d-xo.html

    Looks to me like the rope turning is just as important as the person jumping. The jumpers have to keep off the ground at a set rhythm but the turners have to make sure the ropes are always coming at the same time. And I never realized that the ropes were going in opposite directions! There is no way I could do that! Much talent displayed here.

    Double dotch is pretty hard . I'm telling you . Once i was on the street seeing a group playing double dutch , i wanted to check it out . First i thought it was easy , but man i screwed up many times .... even though i play single dutch very well . Just trying to get in the ropes was a big issue not to mention how you have to keep up with the rhythm the speed of the ropes when you're in ... This takes skills . Believe it ...

    I don't know why but doubledutch just came into my head. I remember back in the 1950s seeing the mostly black girls do this. Sometimes there were White girls joining in but most of the time it was extremely talented black girls and I really enjoyed watching them. I did try a couple times to no avail. LOL
