DHL Stunned: Belgium Mulls Banning Boeing 777s For Being Too Noisy Favoring A300s

- The Belgian federal government has revealed its intention to effectively ban the Boeing 777 at night at the country’s biggest airport, Brussels Zaventem.
This particularly affects the airport’s largest cargo airline, DHL, which uses a variety of cargo aircraft for its operation. The Belgian Federal government instead prefers other aircraft that, in actual fact, include the much older Airbus A300, an aircraft that is generally considered louder and less efficient from an environmental standpoint.

I grown up near Kai Tak's flight paths, hold my beer.
too real
I live under Heathrow's. Let's fight!
@@xander1052 Lets be honest there aren't many airports that compare to Kai Tak.
Bring the Concorde out of retirement. Nice and quiet.
Haha with the CFM Leap than probably and plus the sonic boom won't be heard without afterburners, the Belgian government will love this money saving idea!
They should use 707 with P&W JT3D…
707 is long gone
@@MrViroplen You must have know that David was joking.

Brilliant comment, proper aeroplane!
@@davidefinland6886 DHL should use the C5 Galaxy with TF-39 engines, people will be thrilled with the sound
Noise isn't just limited to engine noise. A lot of the aircraft sound you hear is airframe aerodynamic noise. The 777 is larger than the A300 so it stands to reason that it will be noiser airframe- wise. Performance may also be an issue, if 777s are taking off heavily loaded, they may not be able to climb above the noise monitoring equipment.
So is it louder or quieter? They're insisting the 777 is quieter but the quota says its 10.7, whereas the A300 is under 8? So which is it?
The agreement was that the aircraft would limit its take off weight at night. When aircraft are lighter it allows them to perform a de-rated, or lower thrust take off. Which can limit noise significantly.
The 777 is louder when using full thrust, but quieter when taking off lighter with lower capacity. So both. The A300 is quieter when full but it is smaller and burns more fuel.
The A300 is quieter but also carries only about half of what the 777 can carry so you'd really need two A300s to replace it. I guess you can decide if you want 2x8 or 1x10 It's not explained very well in the video.
The A300 meets the noise requirements, the 777 doesn't. The video is biased.
Sounds like there is a debate on how noise pollution can be measured. Probably not a good idea for the Belgian government to unilaterally revoke a previous agreement based on that. The courts tend to not like it.
DHL should use the C5 Galaxy with TF-39 engines in ths airport
Thanks the laugh or an old b52
Just fly to Leipzig. No nightime restrictions there either.
Those that fly during the night are the ones that fly to Leipzich. There is A LOT of cargo that travels between those 2 hubs. Not just air, but also via road.
plus it’s one of their main hubs
Leipzig is quite far away if the cargo has to resume its journey to Belgium by road. But you're right that there are very few restrictions there. DHL already has a large operation there. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines sometimes even flies circuits at Leipzig with 777s and 787 for learner pilots.
Living very close to JKIA Nairobi I can tell you for a fact that the GE-90 is quite gentle compared to a CF6 or PW4000. It's amazing how people don't appreciate how quiet a modern aircraft is despite the huge amount of power they put out.
I work at this airport and worked in the night and day. and i ve seen rarely the DHL 777 take-off at night. they do depart at night but not alot. in the night i see more 737, 757 and a300
Here's possible replacement, the Tu-114? Or maybe a 727 prior to the hush kit?
I work at Stansted airport in the Uk it has the same issue with local residents who ate complaining that there is one plane above all others that they would loved banned from night time operations and that is the 777
Its very distinctive and the locals all know who fly them and what times they depart
I work at Heathrow... I can tell you the 777's roar is barely noticeable compared to the A380, or back when I was younger, the 747-400s and Concorde. It's all about perspective really when it comes to each type.
I wonder if it's not a case of loudness (dB) but pitch (Hz) of the noise. If it's a distinctive noise, it could be that the pitch is one that is more noticeable.
Incorrect: The "green" (as in political colour) transport minister said he wants to do this. Without going to deep into political specifics (this would take about the size of the encyclopedia britannica in Belgium 😁) Various other officials of other levels of government have already said they would fight this and invoke a ton of safeguards to protect local and regional entities and businesses. Which in Belgium means that DHL has nothing to worry about: the 777 will be retired and replaced by a star tek transporter by the time this comes to anything. Might sound funny, but is about real in Belgium. I know, I live here.
This is unreal. The 777F is *currently* the best cargo aircraft for its range at full load and is 30 years newer than the A300-600F. The A300 maybe quieter because of size but the amount of flight increased frequencies needed will bring the same amount of noise as 1 777F taking a huge amount more cargo that can be delivered on 1 flight
So people living near airports complain about airplane noises? If you don’t wanna hear airplane related noises then move further away and if you can’t afford it, that’s your problem 🤷♂️
They bought cheaper houses near airport and now complain about noise... Same story everywhere...
I remember reading reviews of an airport near my friend's place and half of them were pilots lauding the service they received and friendly staff. The other half were people who lived near the airport complaining that "they fly their planes purposefully close to the ground just to annoy us and make a loud noise! The city needs to shut down this airport IMMEDIATELY!!!"
Like, you're right, they do purposefully fly low. Because tragically, the runway is down there. The ignorance of the layperson can be so infuriating.
From what i remember the a300 is a decade older than the 777 im terms of design.
Besides if Zaventem have a 3600m runway then using lower thrust should be an option if a fully loaded 777f can do it...
People that live next to airports got their houses cheap for a reason and need to keep their mouths shut. If you don’t like it move to a quieter area.
Any visit to a cargo apron, especially in Asia, shows the dominance of the 77L, and Boeing in general, when it comes to freighter aircraft. Banning 77L’s is simply stupid.
To be fair though banning the 777 Freighter ain't a good idea, also isn't the A300 is even louder than the 777, these CF6s can get really, really loud.
The a300 and the 777 fly over my house a lot and the a300 is really loud so I don't know what they are gaining from banning it. But that's governments for you there 😂
A300 is louder but it has smaller engine
That's not true at all. The engine used of B777F is the same engines used to power B777-300ER.
It is currently the most powerful engines created for commercials jets.
Even B777-9X engine is less powerful than that engine.
@@nntflow7058 for the 777F the GE90-115b is derated to a lower thrust level and with the lower take off weight it will not even reach those thrust levels.
@@nntflow7058 and some are equiped with the GE90-110B1L
Dig deeper!
i love the engine noise.. i guess they don't like their parcels shipped out for a lower cost?
It’s stupid many of the people living there knew that they were gonna live close to an airport and then complaining that it’s too noisy.
i live under the takeoff path at zaventem and the A300 is way louder than the B777
dang poor spotters
Do that when DHL grab some A350F, it's not Green to do that now
Try being on a camping site next to the East Midlands Airport. Great for plane spotting. Not so great for actually getting a good nights sleep.
Time for a A330neo freighter
The Boeing 737-200Adv or the McDonnell Douglas DC-9-30 are louder than both, despite having smaller engines. And yeah, the Airbus A300F is a louder aircraft than the Boeing 777F.
The volume of the engines aren't NEARLY as loud as the voices of the people who whine about them.
If you did not understand a single bit about this reasoning: welcome to Belgium.
concord freight.
If the airport is too loud for the residents, the residents must go, not the airplanes. Just evict them from their houses. No more reason to complain. Those people have no idea how important airtravel & aircargo is for the economy. A couple of thousand NIMBYs must not hold the national economy hostage.
Belgium where they make everything leaving....
The war on Boeing continues.
The sooner we can have effective electric airliners, the better.
If Helium were not so scarce and expensive, we'd be using dirigibles for freight transport.
Belgium: Ban loud planes
DHL: "We will be forced to use louder planes"
What kind of logic is that???
This use Airbus A300 + A310 Freighter, Boeing 727, and MD-11 for Cargo.
Maybe they don't want 777s flying at night as the residents can't see the falling door plugs.
Maybe they could move to Luxembourg and serve Belgium from there
The Boeing 777 is an American aircraft so it's hardly surprising that it's louder.
Erm what the sigma
I hope no one thinks it's related to Boeing's production woes
Belgians might be singing a different tune when they realize the restriction impacts their orders delivery dates and possibly their costs. BTW, how "green" are the engines of an A300 vs those of a 777? (Noise vs exhaust)
the 777 is louder than the 787 or A350, but that's it.
yeah, but wouldn't people that care about the environment be able to suffer a little bit of noise in favor of a more fuel efficient plane? i must be missing something, unless it's just all talk and no game.
Im an airbus fan and i think this is a unnessesarily stupid ban.
This regulation makes no sense from an environmental perspective.
Belgium is such a circus......They have not had a functioning government in years.
Somebody wants a bribe.
The objective is to kick DHL out of Belgium. Noise is just an excuse.
Our government is a clown show wow
Buy an old 747 and use that, or see if the USAF has any C-5's for sale?
These people crack me up. Just leave. PIT once thought they couldn’t be replaced and they’ve been crying about it for the last two decades. It’s pretty funny when you think you’re the only location that can efficiently move boxes.
The aircrafts are getting quieter and more efficient for every technical upgrade, still the “environmentalist” only focuses on aviation! Give them a break!
A350f ftw
A350f is mich quiter
Is is not operational yet.
Guess DHL will be forced to buy either 777XF or A350F
Composite aircraft are not a good option for freighters. The 777x freighter will be much more popular
Green parties in power
More like a politician looking for a cause.
I think it's more due to the fact that it's loud at night.
Regardless if the greens are in power or not, such ordinance gonna eventually pass.
And we are talking about night flights here.
Belgian francophone politics
They've wanted Zaventem to be closed for decades, hoping traffic (and jobs, income) would shift to Liege or Charleroi
It is the last stand of this awful Ecolo minister. They completely crashed at federal level in the last elections (because this is how they behaved on many other topics) so he tried to get this done quickly before someone else takes over his position.
@@Wannes_the Walloon and Brussels city politicians wanted once to build a new airport on the closed Chievres air base and closing the Brussels(Zaventem) airport.
Brussels(Zaventem) airport is located not in the Walloon part of Belgium not in the Brussels region but on Flemish territory.
This fact, that is on Flemish territory has been a thorn in the side of Walloon and Brussels politicians for many years.
it is simply Green te**or*sm, if we let the Greens do it then we will be back with a horse and cart in a few years and then the same Greens would go one step further by saying that it is animal abuse to give a horse a cart to pull it with people in that cart.
Could it be because DHL is utilizing a Boeing aircraft and not an Airbus aircraft? After all the EU HQ is located in Brussels.
The 777 is freakishly loud. Even as a passenger it is annoying compared to other aircraft.
Fine then we'll bring back the straight pipe 707 no Turbo Fan
Bureaucracy.
Only A350 at night. Will take 5-10 years before A350's freighters become common.
How can the exception be illegal if it basically says it can operate as long it is quieter? its all politics.
What’s the betting line on how long the regulations last
In this country? Less than the time it takes to form a government.
Complaining about everything became a big 'hobby' worldwide.
Normally when a politician makes a decision that isn't based on facts, logic, or economics I would look to other factors. I suspect the issue would go away with a large campaign contribution but thats just being cynical. Politicians don't take bribes, do they.
Liège will take them.
this is scare, my cat sad
Wtf man...the 777 engine sound better than A300...the real answer to this problem...they prefer airbus more than boeing😂
Typical BE regulations, always STUPID.
Europe leading in stupid regulations as always
Ah, politics and jet engines...
Typical government ba..s
Sounds discriminatory against Boeing.
Maybe they should ban the 777 and the other "louder" planes as well. Having lived in the path of even just daytime plane traffic, I cannot image how bad it must be to live where shitty old planes are used for cargo traffic at night.
Let's be honest though, cargo planes themselves are really bad for our environment and should be courtailed even beyond the sound level issue.
full payload w’ll be for LGG.
No surprise that an eco zealot wants to introduce this.
Politics
Just close the Airport altogether.
Funny cause the 777 is not that loud
Weird turn of events.
Ha ha ha, Belgiums they already shut down DHL in Brussels sending 2500 direct and undirected employees to unemployment plus Sabena plus others companies, Zaventem airport used to be packed with aircraft’s, today works at 1/3 of the capacity 🤔
Their friends build the A300
european governments are fun arent they
It’s genuinely great to have governments that look out for their people, not just the corporations and ultra-rich.
No bankruptcy due to medical bills. Yes.
I admire Europe's effective governance. Meanwhile, here in the USA, it's all going down the toilet due to ignorant populist politicians and their uneducated supporters.
@@dandavidson4717Honest question, are you in some kind of alternate Europe?
Be good peasants and don't make trouble. Otherwise, you get the stick.
@@nntflow7058That's not a good thing for anyone. All you're doing is making your neighbor pay for your problem You think the boys and Brussels are the ones actually ponying up the money?
I would ban all aircraft not using Rolls Royce engines for no reason apart from bias………….😅😅
If people were asleep then they wouldnt hear it. These people complaining should really sleep with a plastic bag over their heads 😂😂😂😂
Noise can obviously be disruptive. Let's work together to reduce the levels of said noise
Homes can get upgraded to be insulated which will also reduce Winter heating bills
The political parties in Belgium are real stupid trying to implement this rule. The B777 is a great aircraft compared to others. A300 is nothing compared to the B777
😮😮😮
Typical belgium, making the worst decisions that make absolutely zero sense.
Typical. Just typical.
Stfu stop blaming Boeing
It makes sence people want to sleep
Amazing! IIRC, either can use the very similar GE or RR engines! One more political patch of BS.
Typical government overreach on matters they do not fully understand.
I can't help but think there is politics involved.
DHL can just simply say that they won't operate out of this airport...perhaps a move to LUX. And see what the politicians have to say
Almost right: should be: "They do not understand anything about"
So just use a300
A300's ancient
Not big enough. Too much cargo that travels between BRU and LEJ
How much would earplugs cost in Belgium?
$100 BILLI0N A YEAR
When laws are written by people who have no damn idea how airplanes work
Move the operation to Amsterdam or other more accommodating airports. Brussels can cope with unemployment later.
You mean Amsterda, the airort that is required to reduce the amount of flight movements over the next couple of years, causing airlines to look for alternative airports?
I suspect the whole point is to weaken DHL in favor of a competitor. I don't know enough about That particular market to speculate beyond that.
You didn't know anything about Amsterdam Airport restrictions do you?
@@nntflow7058 I brought up Amsterdam as an example, and I added "or other more accommodating airports" to my original post. Caught that?
The French speaking southern part of Belgium has been trying for decades to make Brussels Int'l (which is situated in the Dutch/Flemish speaking northern part of the country) unworkable through various legal proceedings, hoping they'll transfer to Liege or Charleroi (aka "Brussels South")
To this end, the French speaking Brussels region has pushed very stringent noise laws, so most approaches are flown over Flanders, and on take off they turn north over Flanders, skirting the Brussels region.
let's close Brussels airport for all night flights
Close for day and night... perfect solution 😂
They definitely will move their business out of the country foolish
They won't. They need BRU.
Typical European govt. stupidity.
