Cracking!!! More in 12 minutes than 20 hours on YT ! Thanks Steve (& Judy) Currently using GP7, GP4, Nikon 3100 with 28-150mm F2.8 and Panasonic VX 980 4k with a fantastic Leica lens. Stabilisation is an issue for us and then there is sound. The Panasonic has a rode with dead cat but the sound never gets to your quality. FCPX is our editing software but we dont think we are using it to anywhere near its full potential. WE are going to watch this series with interest!!!! Thank you for doing this. Sail Safe Guys, Ant & Cid. xx
Love your videos and as an avid amateur photographer I can see your professionalism vs a lot of other vloggers. I always love to geek on gear so thanks for the info. Your videos are always entertaining and informative. Great work.
Thank you so much for this initiative I started our TH-cam channel when we bought our boat mostly to show friends and family but then the channel has slowly grown and now I think its quite fun but I know absolutly nothing about filming, editing or videoproduction but are trying to learn on the way. So to learn from you is really valuable🙏
Thanks much. I really appreciate your take on the cameras. I hope you continue the series. I would love to see your techniques for good audio for all the cameras as well as key editing and color tips.
My goodness, the quality of your channel is just fantastic. Now I know why. If I could somehow apply interventional cardiology to a sailing channel…hmmm
Excellent walk through. Thanks. I concider myself a good all-around video and photo practicioner... but I completely bow to a true professional with many years of experience. An idea for future series could be how to piece together an interview...
YASSS! Been hoping and waiting for this! Getting tips and tricks from a pro is so valuable! The super high production values of your videos is a major part of why I subscribed. I'm thinking about starting up the motovlogging thing here in a about a month and a half when I get a bike (since that is a significantly more attainable financial goal than buying a sailboat and cruising right now, lol), and I've been looking at a helmet mounted hero 10 and an insta 360 mounted on the front of the bike. Would love to see your workflow for color grading and matching footage from multiple cameras. Well, honestly, I would love to see everything you want to share! lol.
Sounds good, you can have real fun on a motorbike mounting action cams all over the place. Try a chest mount as well as a helmet mount, you'll get a smoother shot ( I mean the go pro will take the vibrations out of the shot on the helmet, but as you look around the shot will wave around which you might not want) The chest mount will also show the handlebars well.
Thanks for sharing. Some useful stuff there. Started our channel around a year ago so good to get tips from established channels, especially industry pro’s. Always thought of the 360° camera as a gimmick until now but the ability to film everything at once could be a game changer and now I want one. Thanks for the info, we’re in the Med so,if we catch up with you, we owe you a beer or two! Cheers 😊🍺🍺
Hey Steve, great rundown... As someone who has been in the media industry for 25 year my biggest pet peeve’s are definitely the, as I call them, the airsick camera moves, and my biggest pet peeve, audio issues! I have commented and given advice on so many youtube channels about their absolutely horrible audio practices. Audio for me is a deal breaker on whether I continue watching a show or not. You can have fabulous picture, but if the audio sucks then I’m done! I hope you’ll dive into the audio side as well as the camera tips! And hopefully some of the struggling youtube channels will watch! Good work mate!
Yes you're exactly right, in fact when I do courses on camerawork for broadcasters I show them wobbly cam footage and say what is there that makes you look more amateurish than even that? Not many get the answer, but when you then show them footage with terrible sound everyone agrees it's worse!
The mini is a bit lacking on power to use from a sailboat. The air is good. The phantoms are probably better as they are powerful and have the skids to catch and launch, but bigger to store. We use an Air 2 now which I really like we are just practicing with Judy launching and catching, I've fitted one of the sticks you can buy that poke out below which helps from the boat.
@@svfairisle Thanks for that. It is so good to see your channel going from strength to strength. I remember when you first started and now you have cracked the 50,000 subscriber base with 51K - Congrats from us Aussie sailers inspired by your travels!
I bought iPhone 13mini for my channel as was recommended for great video filming and most expensive I was prepared to go. We have GoPro hero 9 great under water and close proximity for dolphins but can’t figure out how to zoom in tight on further away things like whales or coast
Love it most informative, learnt so much in so little time. Can I be cheeky and ask for a vlog just on getting the best shots from a GOPRO using more than one, different ways to mount extra. Love your vlogs so informative and professional.
Yes of course, that’s the point of this, to answer questions people want to know. So far I’ve got lined up, one on 360 cameras, is it worth having one, what can you do with them and how. Then a session on getting good sound, which Mics can you get and how best to use them, recording sound separately & how you deal with that in the edit. There’s lots on sound and it’s very important so there might be follow ups to that one. I’ll do the action cam mounts, set-up and multiple camera use after that. Any more ideas welcome.
Yes sound is a major issue on mine wind noise especially. My partner won’t watch my vlogs as the sound of wind is too painful, or at least that’s what she tells me🤠
Thanks for all this Steve, interesting stuff, I knew it would be good having watched you guys from the start. Did you have to ruin the image I had of you on a Tarsan swing filming Judy up forward?
very interesting. how about a video of you editing an episode. which media do you use. I imagine you have an all bells and whistles editing suite. what can us amateurs use on a budget
I use Adobe Premiere as an edit platform, it has a monthly charge & we have the whole Adobe suite because I use Photoshop and Muse (for our website) as well as a few other of there Apps. We get a discount because Judy still was a PhD student but it still adds up. The best way to do things cheaply is either Final cut which is a one off payment or DaVincy Resolve which I believe you can get for free!
I’m curious on lenses for filming. I’ve got the Canon 6d mii and the standard 24-105mm. Would you be inclined to purchase the 70-200mm or 70-300mm or neither? There’s also a 55-250mm which is quite inexpensive relative to the other two. Any suggestions welcome. I should point out the intention is to have the ability to zoom in while filming but also be able to film close up. Thanks ☺️
You’ll find the longer lenses pretty useless on the boat. I bet when your using the kit lens (24-105) you’re seldom if ever down the tight end of the lens and will actually find 24mm too narrow a lot of the time. I have a 16/35 that gets much more use on the boat, I’ll lend it to you when we see you & you can see what you think. Longer lenses on the boat are okay for stills of course in good light as your shutter speed will be up there in the thousandths, but will just give you shaky video. Do look for IS (optical image stabilisation)lenses though these help a lot and if you want to take good advantage of the ‘filmic’ low depth look the full frame camera can give you then pick ‘fast’ lens i.e. low aperture numbers. The most used full frame lens I have is the 24-70 f2.8, I’ll lend you that one as well.
@@svfairisle you've just saved us a couple of thousand pounds! I was looking calling around Cyprus to get the 70-200mm lens. Now I've read that I realise what we have is probably the best unless we look at the 24-70 f2.8 but I think for us it's overkill. We need to work on editing and sound before we worry about equipment! Setting off for Turkey tonight so bump into you soon.
Thank you Steve for an excellent, informative presentation. The value of which --- you always provide much sound advice. Much appreciated! Are you able to recommend a PC based Video Editing Suite of software? I believe you are equipped with Apple Mac hardware. Wondered if you had any experience in a range of software options?
Premiere Pro works with PC or Mac but the Adobe suite is expensive. You can get discounts in some situations, Judy had one as a student when doing the PhD and as a lecturer. DaVinci Resolve is a good one which I believe you can get free so give that a go & see if you like it.
The True Kit is still great. We haven’t been kind to it do it’s had a bit of a beating but stood up to it really well. The straps holding the oats inside chaffed through, but apart from that is perfect
@@svfairisle Thanks! I am considering one now. The only thing holding me back is that I can't find any objective info about the UV resistance of Valmex vs Hypalon. Manufactures that only sell Valmex of course say it is just as good. Manufactures that sell both Hypalon and Valmex of course say the more expensive product is far superior. I don't know who to believe. I understand the glued vs welded argument, but that only maters if Valmex can resist the elements longer than the Glue used on Hypalon products. I'd appreciate your thoughts if you get time. Thank you!
Great tips, Steve! Right up my alley. I love this type of content! Cheers mate!
I’m sure you don’t need it Josh, but thanks!

Excellent video Steve. 👍
Thanks, Steve, for this idea about 101-filming. I hope you will cover natural sound and microphones since this is as important in vlog making. Cheers.
Looking forward to the rest of this series - great topic
Great video... the GoPro is very versatile and great for inspecting the rudder and keel!

@@svfairisle I recall sound in a early Daryl Hannah movie in Greek Islands to have annoyingly poor quality in parts.
