Ok pewds here's a rundown on raids. A raid happens when you go into a village while having the effect "bad omen" this is obtained by killing a leader. The more leaders you kill = more bad omen levels, bad omen levels = more waves on a raid. As you continue a raid and get into more waves the harder it gets. You can get rid of bad omen by either getting killed or completing a raid. Once you win a raid you get an effect forever called "hero of the village" this gives you a discount on trades with villagers who live in that village, you cannot carry hero of the village into other villages unless you start another raid in one. Hope this helps

Just correcting a bit, you can get rid of bad omen drinking milk too and the hero of the village effect is not forever, it's 100 minutes.
You can also get rid of the omen by drinking milk and if you kill a leader with fire (flint and steel) you won’t get an Omen
