Hello Why don't they have an attic floor at rooftop that would be your ceiling for first floor, so you can repair or maintain thew electric wiring, roof leaks, etc. An entry is usually drop down stair from ceiling.

Hello @Miss Fle an island in your parents kitchen will make it modern, give extra sitting area and extra cabinets. If designed properly it will not impede the traffic from the kitchen. It will really be a shame to leave it out of the open kitchen.
