    Ok so I’m upgrading a 2010 iMac 11,3 to a new gpu Nvidia k3100m. Can I install the new gpu and then flash it while it’s in the iMac, or do I need to boot Linux up from a usb and do it that way? Tried downloading windows 10 onto the Mac but it wasn’t taking. I just want to make sure I have all the right files I need in order to have a boot screen, control brightness and etc. Any insight will help tremendously! I’ve been on MacRumors and searched through the post but it’s all for a 2011 iMac. I just want to be sure it will be about the same

    • @MacintoshMen
      @MacintoshMen  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can flash it while it's in the Mac. Either use a Linux USB (which I recommend) or install a Windows (can also be 7, doesn't have to be 10) and flash it there. The process for 2010 iMac is the same as 2011.

      So after install, power on Mac, hold down option and boot Linux through the usb. Then once loaded up I use command and nvflash- turn off protection and then nvflash- new bios. Check out the link in description; the 21.5" can take up to a i7 870s. For the GPU I wouldn't go higher than a 765M or 770M because of the power consumption.

      I'd recommend you to get a Quadro K2000M or K1000M, those are relatively cheap cards and can be flashed to have a bootscreen. If you want native Mac support ("plug and play"), you'll have to track down a original Apple Radeon HD5670 or so out of an iMac. Stay away from the 6000 series, those are notorious to fail. I wouldn't get a Apple card though, since those don't have Metal support so you can't run Mojave or Catalina if you want to do that. There are many infos how to flash on MacRumors and my website, have a look at the links in the description.

    It's a shame that this graphics card is from 2013 and it still costs at least 150 EUR on eBay. That's a lot of money to revitalize an almost 12 years old iMac (btw, I have the same iMac). I was considering the upgrade because I think it's still a great machine with a very good screen to browse the Internet, do office work or play older games on. Having a more modern macOS than High Sierra would've been nice, but I think it's not worth it.

      Yeah I agree, those cards are stupid expensive for what they offer in performance. It's also the current chip shortage's fault; basically all GPUs sell for insane amounts. I could sell my current RX5700 for 700€, that's almost double for what I paid for it new. Crazy world.
