Don't think she caught on to the "put the world in your hand" was a quip on our parents trying to make the future better for us instead of putting the internet in our hands
Also, the tone shift coming back to a quicker tempo was great, especially when I noticed the background voices intoning "an-y-thing and ev-ry-thing" as a chant behind Bo, HOO! That is some supervillain with a cult energy, and, ngl, I dig it. Oh, and Caleb Hyles did a character version of this song with Alastor from Hazbin Hotel singing in, complete with a radio filter over it and changing the "Harry Potter" line to "Hazbin Hotel" to keep it in theme for the distinguished Radio Demon.
I always view this song like a villain song. Showing how the internet is something twisted by personifying it into something equally monstrous. A being somehow both extremely cunning as well as unthinking as it mindlessly consumes and maliciously regurgitates. And it's an evil that isn't ever really going away, because it has become so ingrained into how we live and function. I wish I could write villains as well as Bo portrayed the internet here.
@@Gamerguy-ud1zo Truth, the truth is the only thing that heals. It shines the light on that stuff that is wrong, and if you can get the "Who" behind the design all the better A nice broadly exposed bit of truth with reciepts, can expose the world (mind you with mankind in it's urrent state of not being able to handle mass communication like social media setting the truth up as a very carefully manufactured piece of rage bait is the best thing you can do).
I grew up with Bo. As a little kid who just had internet access for the first time at the library, I remember going onto youtube and seeing Bo's first videos when they were relatively new where he was still in school and making edgy raps to piano music, and even though some of that humor hasn't aged super well, he showed from very early on that he was talented. Then he got big enough to actually make real music videos and those went pretty hard. His standup is also pretty interesting, because his own music is a huge component of them. It's almost like a one man concert. He also puts a lot of real stuff in his music about his own issues that he's struggled with in life from insecurities and his relationship with fame to just the reality of being an artist and making art. I admire the guy a ton. It's rare to see someone so young be so good at musical art and performance, and his stuff was pretty out there as well.
As so many others have said, this song is great because it captures the heart and soul of what the internet is. In the first verse, Bo personifies the "internet algorithm" as it lets you guide it towards what you want to see. There are no wrong answers, any response you give will help it find what you are looking for, no matter how nice or twisted that may be. In the second verse we slow down and take the perspective of the creators of the internet. We learn about their goals when designing it, and all the aspirations they had for it. You see how good their intentions are? Of course you can trust them with your kids minds... Now the walls of honesty are coming down and the creators admit it was designed this way on purpose. It lures you in and gets you addicted. Then the final verse. The dark implications are starting to sink in. Your kids belong to us now. We've taken hold of their minds and control what they think. It's too late you fool, we already won. I'll just laugh at you manically because you did this. We were never dishonest with who we are. You surrendered the children's minds willingly. It's too late, we already control everything. The song was never a warning. The song was never meant to teach you a lesson or show you your mistakes. The song was a victory lap. The war is over, the bad guys already won. A lot of Bo's work plays out similar to this. You get lulled into a false sense of safety early on and then hit a very serious detour that sends you down a much more sinister path by the end. I'd recommend "How the World Works" and "That Funny Feeling" for similar comedic, musical storytelling.
The thing about specific slurs reminds me of something a friend of mine told me about kids using swear words in English tests, and the teacher would just be like “That is very rude, but the grammar is impeccable, I have to give the marks”
Edgy or dark humor jokes are a huge part of my sense of humor, especially self depreciating jokes. It's refreshing to see people who are similar. My favorite one for a while now is "My greatest nightmare is a maze of mirrors because it's a jumpscare at every turn."
4:17 I think Shane Gillis made the joke. "Racism isn't like 'You are or you're not' it's more like 'are you hungry?' Like I'm not hungry right now, but if a cheeseburger were to cut me off on the highway, I'm going to be really hungry, I'm going to be hungry all day."
Can we all just appreciate how Alicia managed to turn a 4 minute music video by BOBO into an almost half hour video? The Yap is strong with this one, hmm indeed.
19:58 As someone who attempted to kms twice (once because my ADHD pills were making me paranoid, and the second time because I went into a depressive spiral), it's been 14 years since I last attempted to do so, and I happily engage with jokes like that to this day. It may not be the healthiest, but it's better than letting those thoughts sit in the dark. It's like a Bogart from Harry Potter. You gotta force it into the light so you can laugh at its ridiculousness, or else it'll fester.
20:34 My mom died due to complications with pneumonia when I was 13. To cut out any type of medical mumbo jumbo, she died from being so fat that losing weight from being sick killed her while she was in hospital. She lost over 50 pounds in a month from water being drained out of her lungs and extremities, and died from the shock of so much weight being gone so quickly. The alternative, however, was that she would've drowned if it wasn't drained. I was a wreck for a few years, but I was granted one "silver lining" in high school from the experience-I was immune to Yo Mama jokes. I only had to say "My mama so fat she *_died"_* like five times before people moved on to different jokes. I think my mom would've appreciated the irony, too, because her sense of humor was as blunt as an iron skillet.
I’ve once heard this described as “a villain song for a bad guy who knows they’ve already succeeded in their evil plan” and that tone shift near the end makes it feel very appropriate
There is a parody to this called "Welcome to Anime" that you should ABSOLUTELY watch now! It's true to the source of comedy in this but points out a lot of anime related community jokes/situations.
Also “Welcome to the Industry”, by Josh Scorcher, focusing on the debacles and controversies of the modern gaming industry. Considering Josh actually watches Alicia like us, I imagine he’d be a little surprised to see his own video reacted to. 💀
When talking about Bo Burnham I always have to give a shoutout to "can't handle this", because it often gets overlooked. In a way it's a turning point in his career and after it he took a long break for reasons I am sure other comments already got into in more detail than me. His later works like inside are brilliant, but "can't handle this" shows him in a far more raw (and unexperienced) way that makes it my favorite song of his.
The satire in this work was to make people believe it's a good thing to be on the internet all of the time, and to shove it back in the faces of viewers in a way, to show what has been done to everyone as a whole is truly genius work.
Yeah Bo(bo) is veritable genius of comedic songwriting. Even knowing his style, I still fall for it every time. Really would love seeing you react to more of his stuff (Inside (+Outtakes) and the special before that 'Make Happy'). Love seeing you go off on tangents!
there was comment referring to someone making a vtuber cover of this song. her name is Kilia and you should definitely give that listen to. great cover
17:32 This line and the way its delivered always makes me feel like our modern history is like an epic fantasy/sci novel like we mark the passing of the age from the Fall
Alicia, please, I'm begging you watch all of Bo Burnham. I've seen a quite a lot of artists in my life, be it music, art, comedy, etc, but Bo Burnham is the only one who I'd say is a true genius. Music, timing, humor, commentary, introspectivenes, all of it he does it incredibly. It doesn't matter if you choose to do it on stream or in your own time, but look at all of his content. His TH-cam songs from when he was way young, his comedy specials that he did through the years and of course his special from Netflix, that is where this song is from. Just for a bit of context, this special was made around Covid, and he locked himself in that room for like a month if I'm not mistaken and he lived there. All the instruments, the cameras, the lights, the songs, absolutely everything was done by him alone, and later on edited of course, and all of his specials are not only funny and well put, but give you a lot to think. I truly think that you will like him a lot. And if not, at the worst you'll listen to some funny and catchy songs. Hope you have a good day and I hope you give him a chance because he is truly unique and incredible and deserves to be recognized.
Alicia. Why can't you just let the song flow? Why do you have to kill it? I mean it, the song is purposefully designed to pick up in speed, which you murder everytime you paused. Then it lulls you into a false sense of security as it draws upon the early time of the Internet and its simplicity. I can't help but feel that you may have better realized this if you hadn't been pausing constantly by the time Bo hit with the villain laugh.
26:20 I got my first job in Education because my manager looked me in the eye and said "You'll last longer, you come pre-jaded and willing to bear the bullshit to get things done."
This is how you can tell good react content. The video being reacted to is just under 5 minutes, the reaction is just under 30 minutes. Never change, Alicia.🥰
Fun fact: Three different films were recorded at this location. Horror film enthusiasts probably know this, but "Inside" was recorded mainly in the poolhouse (and the house itself partially, like when he's in the kitchen talking about when "the funniest thing happened") of the house from the original Halloween _and_ Nancy's house from the first Nightmare on Elm Street. Same house. It was remodeled in the early 2000s. Nancy's mom gets yanked through Bo Burnham's front door lol. ...So technically the third horror film to be made here, I guess.
The entire special this is from is GOLD. Sarcastic self-aware dark humor all around and some musical bangers. The outakes are good too. BOBO singing 'you owe me a dumpling equivalent' sends me.
This is actually from a movie her produced and made completely on his own while in quarantine called “inside”. The films great and unexpectedly very emotional
5:18 omg this reminds me of this interview clip with a white interviewer and Samuel L. Jackson. One of the questions was “what do you think of the use of the n-word in this movie?” or something to that effect. And Mr. Jackson latches onto that immediately, “what word? Nacho? Nerd?” and he goes on with “say it” “no” “have you ever said it?” “no sir” “I’m not gonna answer the question unless you say it” *sits there uncomfortably for a second* “do you wanna move on to another question?” *nods gratefully” The circumstances were different, but that was so funny to me, on some level because I would have done the exact same thing as that interviewer, but that was beautiful
20:43 I don't think someone is "soft" because they unsubscribe after hearing a suicide joke. Whether something is "not that deep" is in the eye of the beholder: a "dumb cancer joke" can be deeply off-putting to someone dealing with cancer. And a "dumb suicide joke" can be deeply off-putting to someone who lost a loved one to suicide, or survived suicide themselves. If someone is bothered by that kind of joke, and they find out that a TH-camr they're subscribed to will glibly make that kind of joke from time to time, then the most mature thing to do is just stop watching and unsubscribe.
100%. I was surprised, it felt a bit callous to be mocking random people (whose life experiences and struggles we don’t know) for not all collectively reacting the way she wanted when she knew was joking about a sensitive topic. Everyone has limits to the kind of humor that they’re comfortable with and those lines can shift as life goes on. Unsubscribing when you realize a creator says things that are deeply upsetting to you or that you simply don’t jive with is mature and how people should be navigating the internet; they’re just sticking to the old rule of “don’t like, don’t watch”
They are absolutely soft, you can definitely unsubscribe if you dont enjoy someones content or take on something but taking offense to words or a joke is about as soft as it gets.
@@charliebaker1427 It's not a matter of being "offended". It's a matter of "I don't like being reminded of this subject because it has deeply affected me personally". And then unsubscribing because, rather than demand someone else change their behavior, they just remove themselves from the situation. Alicia herself has said on numerous occasions that she's not ok with people who don't know her joking about cancer. And I don't think any reasonable person would call her "soft" for that.
21:50 I think a lot of those types of jokes is knowing your audience and location. When I'm working, I have to be VERY careful to not let myself or other students make those types of jokes, otherwise I legally have to report the jokes and students to various people; meanwhile, I have a couple friends who make those jokes and I don't bat an eye. It's all a balancing act.
Nice reaction! :) If I could do a recommendation for something I think you'd like is the "Storm" video of Tim Minchin. He does it Live, but he also has an animated video made out of it too. Both are pretty good, but I think you'd appreciate the dialogue that happens during the skit. It's basically a "Science VS belief" discussion that goes sideways, and it's both fun and interesting! :) Keep up the good work, Alicia. :)
For being so empathetic you’d think Alicia would realise that perhaps making kys jokes would perhaps have a genuinely negative reaction to people suffering from those problems or have lost friends to su*cide. (I am censoring this so TH-cam doesn’t delete this comment)
Congratulations watch reaction to edgy video, hear edgy stuff. Theres only so much empathy left in the world for people who cant even stomach hearing negative phrase not even directed at them.
As a minority, when the racism is creative enough, i cab relate. The creative ones make me question, are they trolling or are they just that racist? It's kinda impressive sometimes
Inside is absolutely Bobo's masterpiece, but I really think it's best experienced with some more context on Bo's career as a whole. He got his start during youtube's earlier days doing very cheeky edgy/offensive comedy songs when he was still in high school, and you can see his growth throughout his career as someone who literally grew up as one of the first big "internet celebrities" that weren't viral video stars from happenstance. Inside is incredible, but I really think to get a sense of what went into making it you should watch at least the previous special "Make Happy" before watching Inside. The one before that, "what." is also great if you're really interested in seeing more of the visible parts of his journey and where he sort of came from. Seeing Bo Burnham get what looks like everything he could ever want in life so early and to have it not be all it's cracked up to be, really hits me in the feels. As someone who's been a fan of his since his earliest days and has gone through different but similar experiences, Make Happy and Inside were both exactly what I needed at the time they came out, and I'll always have a soft spot for Bo Burnham's work.
You should ABSOLUTELY check out the full inside comedy special… it’s one of the biggest masterpieces of art ever, Bo Burnham made it by himself in a single room during the peak of Covid lockdown as he was just coming back into performing because of a big depression spiral… and it’s the funniest heart breaking thing I’ve ever watched.
In fact, this entire program (inside) was recorded during quarantine and has very touching moments about the way Bo Burnam dealt with his depression and panic attacks during that moment, it's worth checking out the entire special
Bo is this type of comedian - if you just come to chill, you'll laugh A LOT. If you'll think deeper about what he's saying, you'll get hella depressed.
Oh you HAVE to watch the whole of his special / one-man-movie "Inside", it's so much more than a comedy special - it's a whole work of art and a short film all in one. It also perfectly captures the many complicated feelings of the Pandemic.
knowing that this whole special was inside because of Covid is a must. It changed the game of comedy showing that you don't need an audience if the jokes are good.
man i would LOVE to see a reaction to his 'inside' special even just on the patreon as i imagine copyright would be a nightmare. its not only a masterpiece in songwriting and musical ability but also from a content creation perspective? movie making? editing? phenomenal piece of art with a great story to it
This is like a dilemma and duality of the internet, both good, the best, the sweetest and the worst of the worst of people's degeneracy of the ages, and this is basically a good fellow descends to the deep end of madness. Anyways, Welcome to the Internet.
I freakin love this song by Bo(bo). Really catchy. If you're looking for game recs, Signalis is a good one. 10 hours of gameplay for a rare experience. It is horror, but not the jumpscare horror like FNAF. More like Resident Evil or Silent Hill. Also robot space lesbians

A lot of things go over your head when you're a kid.
2 years and a rewatch, and it's a whole different show.
And if you really think about it, the line is *amazingly* insidious.
Sometimes the best message and commentary about something is brutally honest about what it truly is.
@@Gamerguy-ud1zo Truth, the truth is the only thing that heals. It shines the light on that stuff that is wrong, and if you can get the "Who" behind the design all the better
A nice broadly exposed bit of truth with reciepts, can expose the world (mind you with mankind in it's urrent state of not being able to handle mass communication like social media setting the truth up as a very carefully manufactured piece of rage bait is the best thing you can do).
Lore accurate internet
The crossover I didn't know I needed!
Granted alicias about as edgy as tofu haha
I love a lot of BoBo's Older stuff. "Words, Words, Words", ""New Math", and his specials "what" and "Happy" are truly masterpieces
Seeing Alicia reacting to 'Welcome to the Internet': "Oh god, she's gonna pause the song every five seconds, isn't she?"
Helps not getting copyrighted
This is why he's my favorite comedian
Alicia sweetie, the Internet is like humanity on a digital screen, it's FULL of Contradictions!
Can we all just appreciate how Alicia managed to turn a 4 minute music video by BOBO into an almost half hour video?
The Yap is strong with this one, hmm indeed.
It's an Alicia brand feature. I remember one of her vids, she was ranting for 20 minutes, and then I realised the video was only at 0:20 😂
It's not an Alicia video if it doesn't get dragged on for 5 times the actual video's length.
Having the wrong medications can be so incredibly detrimental, I'm glad you're doing better man 🫂
The tone shift is the best. It really shows how corporations play you, acting like they're your friend until they got you.
If you haven’t already seen them, I’d recommend Country Pandering, Lower your Expectations, and Sad. Some of my favorites from Bo Burnham
And can't forget "From God's Perspective" and "How the World Works".
You should DEFINITELY check out Tom Cardy. His "Red Flags" has gone viral and hes a musical genius! 😂
She would love Tom Cardy, along with "Red Flags" she should listen to "Mixed Messages" "HYCYBH" and "HS".
@Orion_44 YES! H.S IS MY SH*T! ❤️❤️❤️ I think she might appreciate the song Perception Check too!
@@Orion_44 I got introduced to him with HYCYBH...
@@Orion_44 SERIOUSLY H.S IS MY JAM!! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥 I think she would also appreciate the song Perception Check!
When she says reacting to "Bo Burnham", she means just the one song from the movie.
If you like this song there is also a really funny "Welcome to anime" parody made by Itano. ^^
Neo pfp spotted
Did you draw it? It looks really good
@Most_sane_faust_main Nah someone else drew it. Iirc the name was EmpireDawn. But it was a black and white painting so I colored it in.
Also “Welcome to the Industry”, by Josh Scorcher, focusing on the debacles and controversies of the modern gaming industry.
Considering Josh actually watches Alicia like us, I imagine he’d be a little surprised to see his own video reacted to. 💀
Alecia: i make edgy jokes
Also alecia: *condemns people for making edgy jokes andppretends to be a therapist*
Yeah alicia is not edgy by any means, its like a mom trying to be hip lol
Oh 27 minutes she must watch a couple of songs. How wrong I was XD
My favourite line is the very sinister “and it did all the things we designed it to do.” With regards to the internet.
The satire in this work was to make people believe it's a good thing to be on the internet all of the time, and to shove it back in the faces of viewers in a way, to show what has been done to everyone as a whole is truly genius work.
the entire "inside" is great
"How did you get THAT good at racism" absolutely killed me omg
Also, bobo
2:24 aint no way im lookin at the news
he is highlighting a standard thing and then the extremes of the internet. perfect
Yeah Bo(bo) is veritable genius of comedic songwriting. Even knowing his style, I still fall for it every time. Really would love seeing you react to more of his stuff (Inside (+Outtakes) and the special before that 'Make Happy'). Love seeing you go off on tangents!
Anyone not watching Inside in its entirety is doing themselves a disservice, the context is so good
Bo is my favorite comedian, he always has a level of dark realism that just hits just right.
there was comment referring to someone making a vtuber cover of this song. her name is Kilia and you should definitely give that listen to.
This is a blessing to reacting to
23:30 i dont think TV itself is bad, but you have to care for the content, hey arnold is NOT going to ruin your kid dopamine levels, i assure you.
There's a really good song cover of this by Caleb Hyles that he sings as Alastor from hazbin hotel.
YES, now she gotta listen to Repeat Stuff, my favorite one of Bo’s songs
Fun fact: Three different films were recorded at this location.
Horror film enthusiasts probably know this, but "Inside" was recorded mainly in the poolhouse (and the house itself partially, like when he's in the kitchen talking about when "the funniest thing happened") of the house from the original Halloween _and_ Nancy's house from the first Nightmare on Elm Street.
Same house. It was remodeled in the early 2000s. Nancy's mom gets yanked through Bo Burnham's front door lol.
...So technically the third horror film to be made here, I guess.
He came he sang and we all were left speechless
The entire special this is from is GOLD. Sarcastic self-aware dark humor all around and some musical bangers. The outakes are good too. BOBO singing 'you owe me a dumpling equivalent' sends me.
Woman's got a PhD in Yapology
This is actually from a movie her produced and made completely on his own while in quarantine called “inside”.
The films great and unexpectedly very emotional
Oh please react to this full special! It's a one-man masterpiece! Bobo delivers on this one.
Best way to respond to unsolicited pics: Sonic the Hedgehog saying, "Cool story! Next time, keep it to yourself!"
7:52 Your dad is probably gonna have some questions later.
5:18 omg this reminds me of this interview clip with a white interviewer and Samuel L. Jackson.
One of the questions was “what do you think of the use of the n-word in this movie?” or something to that effect. And Mr. Jackson latches onto that immediately, “what word? Nacho? Nerd?” and he goes on with “say it” “no” “have you ever said it?” “no sir” “I’m not gonna answer the question unless you say it” *sits there uncomfortably for a second* “do you wanna move on to another question?” *nods gratefully”
The circumstances were different, but that was so funny to me, on some level because I would have done the exact same thing as that interviewer, but that was beautiful
Lowkey agree
4:02 they be hitting the jimmy neutron brain blast
Keep up the good work, Alicia.
The chat is SAVAGE “1/10 where’s the rest?” I’m sobbing
Put your favorite chatter’s response in the replies lmao I saw another one that made me cackle “0/10 seek medical aid”
Side note your ears moving side to side is so damm adorable and makes me smile keep up the good work rat Queen
As a minority, when the racism is creative enough, i cab relate. The creative ones make me question, are they trolling or are they just that racist? It's kinda impressive sometimes
4:02 WELL WELL WELL
Inside is absolutely Bobo's masterpiece, but I really think it's best experienced with some more context on Bo's career as a whole.
Per Uncle Ruckus, "You got to rotate your racial slurs, like crops."
Too much yapping on a 3-5m musick video.
In fact, this entire program (inside) was recorded during quarantine and has very touching moments about the way Bo Burnam dealt with his depression and panic attacks during that moment, it's worth checking out the entire special
BOBO!! LETS GOO
Bo is this type of comedian - if you just come to chill, you'll laugh A LOT. If you'll think deeper about what he's saying, you'll get hella depressed.
I've never seen someone turn 4 minutes into 27
It's a skill.
Oh you HAVE to watch the whole of his special / one-man-movie "Inside", it's so much more than a comedy special - it's a whole work of art and a short film all in one. It also perfectly captures the many complicated feelings of the Pandemic.
"Bitch, I'm Canadian" words to live by.
Especially if you're a War Criminal
knowing that this whole special was inside because of Covid is a must. It changed the game of comedy showing that you don't need an audience if the jokes are good.
It's kind of annoying how much she's yapping. Like how do you turn a 4 minute video into over 20 minutes?
First of all you’re stupid it’s a reaction video second of all you clearly haven’t seen much asmondgold
Yo Bobo
Also finding it funny imagining Alicia receiving a slur and just: "Ah thats nice, lets go put it up on the fridge for all to see!"
Love the reaction and now I need more Alicia reacting to Bo Burnham videos! Anything from Inside or Can’t Handle This would be amaaazing
Damn. Alicia out here calling the little guys "earthworms." Its not our fault. XD
I really hope you'll consider reacting to INSIDE as a whole, it's honestly such a work of art. Gotta love BoBo...
man i would LOVE to see a reaction to his 'inside' special even just on the patreon as i imagine copyright would be a nightmare. its not only a masterpiece in songwriting and musical ability but also from a content creation perspective? movie making? editing? phenomenal piece of art with a great story to it
You should hear his song "can't handle this" (also, BOBO)
I really want her to watch “Art is Dead” it’s in my opinion Bo’s best work
This is like a dilemma and duality of the internet, both good, the best, the sweetest and the worst of the worst of people's degeneracy of the ages, and this is basically a good fellow descends to the deep end of madness.
Anyways, Welcome to the Internet.
I freakin love this song by Bo(bo). Really catchy.
