I do... not understand how the audience callback stuff is supposed to work. Are we just... told what they are, like in this manner? Is it just genuinly intuitive to people who know how wotagei chants work?

I don't know about it either, but I guess you're either told like this, or it's written as part of the lyrics

There are general rules, but basically you have Hai chants, Seno calls, Fuwa Chants, Fu chants and lyric chants. These are normally done to the beat of songs during instrumental breaks, Some songs have combo chants 0:57 - 1:07 There are guides out there which allow you to generally figure it out, but for most people they just go look for a video like this where someone breaks it down lol.

Fuwamoco said that usually, it's up to the fans to organize and create a chant pattern and not dictated by the talent, but since they know many of us are new to this, they made an exception and made one for us!
If you haven't seen the full stream this comes from, they teach us step by step so you get the hang of it one piece at a time. This clip is from the end when they put it all together.
I highly recommend learning them, as it becomes super fun to see them perform the song when you get to participate with all your heart like this 🩵🩷

It’s generally intuitive/second nature after a few listens once you’re experienced enough. A lot of j-pop/anisongs have similar structures so you can figure out what goes where.
