    Session 0:
    DM: OK... How did the party meet?
    Player 1: I saw Player 2's Summoning Sigil and I summoned them.
    Player 3: Yeah, I originally invaded Player 1, but then they beat me, so I put a Summon Sign before the boss.
    DM: Yeaaaaah. OK. And how did you all respond when you got summoned?
    Player 2: I just raised and lowered my shield like a thousand times and moved off left or right by an inch at a time really fast.
    Player 1 & 3: I Praised The Sun.

      I know this is a joke, and a funny one, but I'm legit worried this is the extent of the story/RP thought the devs gave this game based on the q&a from Steam Forged.

    I'm certainly on the fence about picking this up. I really enjoyed the games and even played (and painted) the board game adaptation my buddy picked up. I know at least half the table would want to play this but a couple others may not. I'll be looking forward to hearing your review on this later on.

    Very interested in this and grateful for you digging into it. Like seemingly most folks, my knee-jerk reaction is that 5e is the wrong system for a Soulsborne game, but I'm genuinely curious to see what they do, particularly with the death and hollowing mechanics. Thanks again and looking forward to the next video.

      I actually love the respawn mechanic! Like I want my character to die and stuff, but I don't want lose it and have to make a new one or wait forever until the party resurrects it...

  • @leonpetrich5864
    @leonpetrich5864 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I really like the idea of position. It's a way more realistic approach to a health bar. You fight, lose stamina, get exhausted when you parry incoming attacks or get hit but your armor saves you. Until you lose your position and one brutal attack crushes you.

  • @johncox7169
    @johncox7169 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I know that I know literally nothing about how the rules for Dark Souls (the RPG) is going to be, but I have played a LOT of the video game, and I don't really consider a game where dying has no lasting effect "grittier" than D&D. It actually sounds like (since they expect you to die MANY times per adventure) that dying is almost a joke in its lack of consequences.

    The fact that it's based on 5e means we can port good mechanics to 5e if there are any, which is great. Also, 5e is the first TTRPG for a lot of players so it makes sense to lower the entry bar and attract more people.

    I came into this mainly because I wanted a good single play world that kind on easy to grasp but not the same as D&D5E. Its got the gothic horror theme that I felt could be a good theme. I also matched in with the board game as well and so far it has worked well. My girlfriend in not a games and some of the elements actually worked better then I expected. Worth a try.

    I look forward to hearing a follow up, I just got my copy and my first impression is that I am underwhelmed from how much is just copy and paste DnD 5e books or Dark Souls 3 screenshots / text. It has a lot of cool ideas just a little underwhelming.
    The biggest thing I am curious about is how you guys fixed "Knight" with the Origin errors (The book is stuffed full with errors btw). Since the strongest a Knight can start the game with is 15 strength, 1 away from being able to wear his armor. I am curious if it is supposed to be 16 to get a +3 but I can't tell since it is an error in the book.
    Anyway, look forward to hearing a continuation of this one!

    What do you mean death would be more gritty or impactful in a dark souls game? If anything it should be the opposite. Death for the undead is at worst a trip back to the last bonfire.

    • @clayisahottie
      @clayisahottie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The issue is, for the Undead PCs in the Dark Souls TTRPG, is that everytime you die, you end up losing more and more of your Humanity and you'll reach a point where it'll be all gone and your PC goes Hollow. Which is Game Over.

      So you have a certain number of lives, & presumably pick up extra mans from nosses & other rewards. Again, dark souls is dark & gritty in a lot of ways, but death mechanics isn't one of them.

    • @Ozziemandias56
      @Ozziemandias56 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Malisteen I've always kind of been against the opinion that Dark Souls is Dark and Gritty. Maybe it's cause Dark Souls shaped my view of the fantasy genre. But like even in the darker moments, such as The Profaned Capital, I just can't see it as some Grimdark setting.

    I wish they had gone with DS 1/2 'undead' instead of DS3 'unkindled'. The DS3 framework is very prescriptive & limiting. Also very backwards looking. DS1 and DS2 both tell thrir own stories, and in doing so provide a framework that you could use to tell your own story. DS3, while a good game, isn't so much its own thing. It's instead about it's own franchisd, DS1 in particular. The result is a much narrower scope, bordering on navel gazing, and that's built into the kind of creature the protagonist is.
    DS 1 & 2's undead could be anyone, and could do anything. DS 3's unkindled all have to have been former failed attempts to link the fire, brought back to try again. That's some pretty tight shackles on your backstory & motivation, at least to start.

  • @valasafantastic1055

    I have a little interest out of curiosity, but not too much.
    I disagree and like alignment personally but everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I can understand and agree with looser alignment and people choosing no alignment for PCs in their campaigns. I think adding typically and encouraging two play-styles one with and one without as a session zero decision is the solution that benefits everyone's playstyles most. Alignment is still very useful for DMs to easily understand how to run NPCs and other creatures, and for players whom it is helpful for.
    How is this gritter?
    Did I miss something?
    Death is a mild inconvenience and you automatically re-spawn... like instantly....
    That's FAR less gritty than regular D&D!
    Even At high levels it takes prep, spell slots, diamonds! And is pretty much impossible before level 5!
    If you want gritty play regular D&D LV 1-3 and a bit of LV 4!
    Bloodied mechanic is one of the decent things from 4e!
    Why is this 5e D&D based at all? If it does away with so many core 5e D&D things? Races, Alignment, regular stats and HP as separate things, etc.
    This seems like it should NOT be 5e based but an entirely separate TTRPG....
    Is it a forced 5e compatible for predicted sales? To make it seem easier to pick up for people already playing and used to 5e rather than learning an entirely new system?
    Wait wasn't there a Japanese licensed Dark Souls TTRPG?! What aren't they licensing and translating that?!
    Seems cash grabby and I don't know enough about how it actually runs and how compatible it is with the rest of 5e.
    Seems like it might be 'too modded' form standard 5e to really even be 5e anymore. Honestly at that point make your own separate TTRPG...
    Just saying.
