    Hey everyone! Thank you all for watching and I hope you enjoyed the video. This is my first time uploading a Carnivores video. It's not my usual type of upload but I'll probably make a few more. I really enjoyed the process of making this video, and I think Carnivores has some really great worldbuilding to work off of.

      James, this reminded me of a game I played as a kid !! I would have been on apple devices back in 2014 or so, and I think it was a paid game? I remember it being a dinosaur game, but forgot whether you were a dinosaur or a human, but I remember all the dinosaurs were kind of creepy and black. There was a volcano you could go into. I loved this game and hope someone might recognize what I'm talking about !!

    I really like how they purposely used outdated depictions of dinosaurs as a basis for the aliens. It definitely gives the games their own feel to them. It makes the convergent evolution more believable because realistically these things wouldn’t look exactly like earth dinosaurs since they indipendantly evolved to fill a lot of the same niches utilizing similar body plans. Too bad the reboot just uses Jurassic Park designs and lacks the character of the original games.
    It would be cool if you did make some videos covering the extended/mod lore and different fan theories. It would’ve been cool if the reboot were to canonize some of those as a way to expand the world, while still keeping it true to the spirit of the old games.
    This was definitely interesting. Great video.

    • @BackToBackJames
      @BackToBackJames  ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Thanks for the comment. I couldn't have put it better myself. The designs of the creatures in Carnivores are one of my favourite parts of the game. I don't think I've seen any other dinosaur media that intentionally uses inaccurate dinosaurs for artistic purposes without just being wilfully ignorant or anything. I think the old designs would have looked cool in the Reborn style and yeah I don't really like the Jurassic Park designs of that game. I'll definitely make some more videos talking about the extended lore of the mods. I think I'll start off with the Middle Islands mod which expands upon the lore of Carnivores Cityscape and gives an explanation as to why the dinos in that game looked way differently.

    • @ndinoguy6845
      @ndinoguy6845 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      I can kind of see waht they were trying to do with the designs in the reboot. When the original Carnivores came out those old outdated 60s designs used were 30+ years old and now in the 2020s, those Jurassic Park 90s design are also becoming 30+ years old and are now also outdated. The 60s designs were better though, as they do feel more alien than the 90s designs.

    "Aliens would have evolved completely different from life on Earth."
    I appreciate you making the distinction, because you're right, they're neither dinosaurs or animals, but don't sweep it under the rug how intense the convergent evolution is between the two planets. Sure, in the real world, that's the point, but in-universe, the fact that these aliens with no relation to Earthlings whatsoever independently evolved to look like this is kind of amazing and worth attention.
    Of course, plenty of sci-fi stories do stuff like this all the time, like Star Trek aliens just being humans but different colors or w/e, but it's still kind of amazing to think about what that means for xenobiology in the stories where it happens.

    • @BackToBackJames
      @BackToBackJames  2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Real dinosaurs would probably look extremely different than the organisms of FMM-UV 32. But yeah the convergent evolution is still really evident. Especially with the plants in the game which are basically Earth plants as well as the mammals in Ice Age. Perhaps it's because of how similar the planet's conditions are to Earth's conditions; similar moon, similar size, temperature, etc... And convergent evolution like this doesn't even seem that farfetched considering what has happened with animals like the shark, dolphin, and icthyosaur. I think Carnivores manages to strike a really great balance between still being considered a dinosaur/prehistoric hunting series while also letting you remember you're on an alien planet in the future. Unfortunately the remakes really throw this out the window by going for generic maps and the almost Jurassic Park style creature designs. Thanks for the comment by the way, I like reading ones like this.

    • @lurkerrekrul
      @lurkerrekrul ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@BackToBackJames Or maybe aliens visited Earth millions of years ago and took samples of the flora and fauna to deposit on other worlds.
      Yes, in more recent years, scientists have come to the conclusion that real dinosaurs probably looked very different from the classic depictions of them, but that wasn't so much the case when the original games were made. So an argument could be made that these were the evolution of dinosaurs taken from Earth.

    • @CoracaoAcidental98
      @CoracaoAcidental98 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@lurkerrekrulThat argument makes zero sense since in 90s was the time more accurate depictions of dinosaurs became more widely known thanks to Jurassic Park, the game uses a older style remarking more to the 70s by choice.

    • @BackToBackJames
      @BackToBackJames  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CoracaoAcidental98You have a really good point. The depiction of dinosaurs in Carnivores is still very different from what they were thought to have looked like in the 90s. Carnivores came out 5 years after Jurassic Park. The retro styled dinosaurs in the game are definitely a deliberate artistic choice.

    I played the hell out of “Carnivores 2” back in 2000. It was a Christmas present from my Mom in 1999. It had a lot of flaws with the game mechanics (mostly dinosaurs clipping through the scenery and bad dino AI), but it was a lot of fun for its day. The entire franchise was a really novel idea for the late-90s/early-2000s.

I did play Carnivores 2 on that system though. I have copies of Ice Age and Cityscape, but I've never gotten around to playing them. I wasn't all that interested in Ice age to be honest, but a local store had it cheap and I'd read that you could swap the files between the games to have dinosaurs in the snow, or mammoths in the tropical maps.
    On Carnivores 2, I managed to get out of the trophy room, by running and jumping in one of the corners. It can take a while, but when you get up on top, it's just a vast, flat plain with a repeating texture. I think I also managed to get on top of the block in the center of the trophy room as well.

    2:40. Adjacent to a dinosaur is a dinosaur. If the morphology and behavior resembles the same body plan as Earth's Dinosaurs, why denounce FMM-UV 32's animals as anything else but? It's like saying Humans aren't animals despite the lineage coming from rodent-like mammals.

    • @BackToBackJames
      @BackToBackJames  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Humans share the same DNA with all other animals on Earth, and also directly evolved from other animals. The "dinosaurs" on FMM-UV 32 don't actually resemble dinosaurs from Earth. They resemble outdated depictions, but in terms of what dinosaurs actually looked like, the morphology and behavior is very different. It's a case of convergent evolution and even when it happens with two animals on Earth they're not considered to be the same animal.

    • @TheMightyN
      @TheMightyN ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BackToBackJames And yet here we are...people still consider stem-mammals as dinosaurs and humans as not animals. It is possible to classify an alien organism into a similar category. No matter how you spice it, those creatures are dinosaurs; just not the ones from Earth--and demonstrated by the HD new comers, does give an 'X' to doubt behind your head-canon.

    • @BackToBackJames
      @BackToBackJames  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Humans are objectively animals and stem-mammals are objectively not dinosaurs. It doesn't matter what the layman may refer to either as. If the animals on FMM-UV 32 aren't the dinosaurs from Earth, and only superficially resemble outdated depictions of them, why would we still call them dinosaurs instead of using a new term or classification?

    • @TheMightyN
      @TheMightyN ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BackToBackJames Okay. But Bananas are objectively fruit yet share DNA similar to Man, despite the Evolutionary lineage; so, by that logic, we should direct your question under the notion just the same with the simple replay of, "Why wouldn't you?" Regardless of whether most FMM-UV 32's organisms are outdated in appearance, they share the same physiology as their Earthly Mesozoic, Permian, and Cenozoic counterparts. If a creature resembles a Mammoth down to the last detail but were separated by other words, it doesn't anymore close related? What you're trying to convey seems like a double-standard based preservation bias.

    • @BackToBackJames
      @BackToBackJames  ปีที่แล้ว

      @mr.n7237 The FMM-UV 32 dinos are not outdated in appearance because the game is outdated, they are outdated in appearance because it was a deliberate artistic choice showing that these are alien creatures. There are more similarities between humans and depictions of grey aliens than there are between Earth dinosaurs and FMM-UV 32 dinosaurs, yet grey aliens are not reffered to as humans. I don't understand your point because they are not similar down the last detail, like at all. If you took an animal that resembled a mammoth and changed its colour, size, anatomy, behaviour, and it's entire DNA sequence than why would/should it still be called a mammoth?
