I really dig these deck build videos. Please keep them going. I've done all campaigns except Scarlet Keys and Hemlock, but I'm always looking for new investigators to try before I start those campaigns
Ahh the Cheese Man; one of my favorite investigators. One fun trick you can do to smooth out his deckbuilding is to play him skill heavy, spend your early XP upgrading your initial 5 Seeker level 0 cards, and then buy Ancestral Knowledge and use the increased deck size to refill on level zero Seeker cards for free. So for example you could take Deductions and Magnifying Glasses in your starting deck, make sure to upgrade them quickly, and then grab Crack the Case and Burning the Midnight Oil when you buy Ancestral Knowledge. Also FWIW, I do think the advanced whip might have pushed him up into very strong tier. It single-handedly lets him be a main cluever that can not only be self-sufficient but also sometimes as helpful an enemy manager as a flex. On more than one occasion through TFA my teammates got pinned down by some enemies and as Jack I was able to save the day by pivoting from getting clues to whipping some snakes. And then I'd pivot right on back to cluevering with barely a break in tempo because his ability rewards running around anyway
As a highly mobile character like Monty, I'd consider running Empirical Hypothesis over Lucky Cigarette + Relic Hunter. Just getting Field Research for 1xp (enter a 3 shroud location) makes it mostly a testless slotless LCC, with the added benefit that you can wait to draw cards until the right time in case you need to avoid your weakness.
Yeah his advanced weakness is brutal. My first game playing him with advanced sigs, I moved turn 1 into a shroud 4 location, drew the weakness during upkeep, then drew obscuring fog during Mythos. I didn’t have higher ed yet so I proceeded to spend several turns digging for book boosts like perception & fox mask. It was rough
I'm surprised he rated the cheese man so high, considering his large setup time and reliance on having a large economy. I'd argue Finn, who has a similar setup time and card selection in the beginning scenarios, is just as strong while being more vulnerable to the mythos but alot more flexible in his role.
Out of curiosity, was there any consideration for lone wolf as an economy card, or is it just too slow? I figured it might be good considering how often he runs around the map all by himself, but as you said in a previous video economy later is often worse than economy now. I don’t have much experience with the card, so I have a hard time rating it.
@@jarrettpetrin1109 I'm super averse to slow economy in general, but it's genuinely solid in Monterey and you could easily run it over some of the weaker economy cards. Economy later isn't so bad when you're hemorrhaging money all scenario with Higher Education and Twine.
I'm fairly certain their abilities are insanely pushed because their deckbuilding is such a puzzle that tends to lead to subpar decks. Norman effectively can get resources and card draw from his ability, better than Harvey. With a full seeker pool, he'd be busted. Lily has a better statline than any other fighter but has to use spells to fight scenario 1 and sometimes 2, would be crazy as a pure guardian. She's one who probably needs her upgrade pool more than her level 0 Daniela+ 10xp Runic Axe is also insane. Can happen with setup and team comps but can't happen with only her deckbuilding. Monty could probably be good with either pool, making a strong rogue flex or seeker cluever.
I rate Monterey among the best Cluevers after playing a very similar deck to the one you showed off (possibly based off of the same Twinal Tap deck). Its a very asset heavy deck, but you get so many actions back that I think it more than makes up for it. It may be another asset to play, but I would recommend Lone Wolf instead of one of your economy cards. Monty is going to be by himself for 90% of a scenario and it makes it so that you're getting 3 resources a turn passively, as well as 3 cards via LCC and something like 5 or 6 actions a turn. He can quickly snowball. Funnily enough I hated Monterey when he was revealed because of how much he steps on Ursula's toes and now he's one of my favorites because he was such a blast to play.
Oh yeah, fair point on Lone Wolf. Absolutely worth running. Unfamiliar with the other deck creator but not surprised to hear we're coming to similar conclusions. The deckbuilding restrictions sort of funnel everyone towards 'something' like this. And yeah, something I realized right after I uploaded was "Wait a second, half of these assets might not be fast, but they instantly move/generate resources/draw cards. They're basically fast." He's not nearly as setup heavy as I made him out to be.
@@RatherIncoherent Monetary Jack - Twinal Tap was his highest rated ArkhamDB deck when he came out, basically for being the first with the Ariadnes Twine + Eon Chart combo.
The parallel backside is interesting. You can get lockpicks(1), charon's, lola, streetwise, and some juiced seeker assets like ancient stone which synergizes with his draw. But the tradeoff of not having something like pathfinder is a definite dilemma
I find ||Jack (back and front) crazy good. I've solo The Forgotten and Edge of the Earth with him and he's great, as you'd expect from a great stat line, amazing unique items, and full access to green. He's a little boring in that you mostly just run all the good green cards.
@@hammerdall Haha, you're right but that I didn't even remember says how little it mattered. He still gets Eon Chart (4) since it's a relic (to keep recycling with his ability for lots of extra actions), Lucky Cigarette Case (3) because, and Gené. And he still gets Deduction and Milan! The only think I was missing was The Red Clock (5). When you're missing a 10 XP card, you know you are in good shape.
@@KrishnaRoskin lol, great point. The last thing I'd want to do is just run another "good cards rogue" deck, which unfortunately seems to be like every rogue these days.
@@LittleBlueJug Yeah, it was a little different since I did lean into the relic/charm side more and it was also true solo. It kinda ended up the same as Rogue 0-5 with Dunwich splash would. Not exciting but, when I drew the bullwhip after being swarmed by monsters in Edge of the Earth, I did make the Indian Jones sound. So it was a good time.

Would easily buy the advanced whip if it was genetically available as a Rogue (•••••), 5 xp costing item. Crazy how powerful that is.

Hiking boots, pathfinder. Leo, and eon chart. Parmesian jack needs all that movement tech because he just saw an angry Cho pick up a runic axe

Parmesan, cheddar, mozzarella, BRIE.
Monterey’s basic movin’ with his homies and ME.
