Old School Judo VS Modern Judo

  • You guys asked for judo so here it is.
This video was made for comedic purposes. Please do not take offense if you are a judoka.
I have tremendous respect for judo athletes of all eras, but much like karate, certain rule changes influence the sport and it becomes altered.
Did I cherry-pick? Yes of course. Modern Judo still has beautiful throws but if they both look good then it's not really funny.

Although maybe this sort of video works with TKD (I'm not sure, I don't train in it), but like the description says, this one actually is quite cherrypicked. Although leg grabs were banned, this wasn't for "safety concerns" or anything like that, but rather because people were using both hands on both the opponent's trousers to stall for time (there are other reasons, of course, but I really think this was the main one). Many rule changes in judo (time limits on certain gripping positions, banning certain grip breaks, and penalties for false throws and stalling) have all been designed to prevent "negative judo". An example of "negative judo" would be like getting a single small point early on (once known as Yuko or Koka), then whittling the time away with overly safe play.
Many purists argue that any and all rule changes "dilute" the sport, but I would argue that modern day judo is still very explosive, athletic, and dynamic. Of course, some rule changes have been questionable (I really liked korean seoi nage), but overall, I think a lot of old school judoka just like to complain.

That's not the problem with modern Judo. There has been always a subset of Judo that was allowed in competitions, for whatever reasons. Judo has leg locks, wrist locks, shoulder locks, and I have books from the '70s that question why some locks were banned (back then), and other were not. E.g. studies showed Ude Garami being in practice an elbow or a shoulder lock depending on the physiology of Uke. I do feel it more on the shoulder sometimes but it's also likely the stronger of the two joints involved so if pulled to danger zone I wonder what would actually happen.
Anyway, they had actual shoulder injury data to back the claim up, and the point is something was banned and something wasn't and the criteria weren't clear even back then.
What changed is the philosophy of the scoring system. Today points are rewarded on a more mechanical, deterministic way, back then basicly you had to convince the referee and the judges you actually performed a legit technique. It never mattered whose back was hitting the tatami first. What actually mattered is how effective you action was, and effectiveness was measured in "Judo terms", how much of an advantage you gained on your opponent from a fighting pov.
An example may clarify. I've seen Ippons awarded today for doing this kind of "Seoi Nage": you turn and drop on both your knees, crunch pulling your opponent on your back, pivot on your and their shoulders pushing with your leg, roll over, end in a sitting position with your opponent sitting behind you (fully exposing your back).
This would have resulted in no points at all back then. It doesn't matters if it's a way to make your opponent's back touch the tatami. What matters is that you not only gained no advantage at all (it's not even a fall, it's a roll), you also gave your back to them! Back then the referee would just let you continue and now you're in big trouble.
The whole point of throwing an opponent is gaining control. Back then you had to display (to the referee) both force and control. No force, no control, no advantage, you barely got a Koka if the referee felt generous. No force, no (full) control, but some advantage (e.g. you end up in a better position for ne-waza), Yuko. With force, no full control, Waza-ari. Full force, full control, Ippon. These were guidelines more than strict rules.
To those who aren't familiar with Judo, I describe that as the "concrete rule". So the referee is thinking what would have happened if the same action occurred on a concrete floor instead of a tatami. Back then, being on the receiving end of an Ippon-worthy throw, but on concrete, would have actually ended the fight with a knock-out or serious damage, breakfall or not. At least that's the philosophy of it, that's why it literally ends the fight.
That system wasn't perfect, especially at low levels people would specialize in throws that looked effective and forceful even if not perfectly executed, rather than those who always looked a bit "light" and messy in real fights, think of morote-seoi vs ko-uchi-gari. Not that you would pass on a ko-uchi-gari opportunity, points are points, but you knew getting an Ippon with it was kinda harder. It also tended to end up with Uke sort of pulling guard.
The referee side was also problematic, it took a true expert to be able to properly do the job, as a deep understanding of throws and situations was required. It also left a lot to personal interpretation. Some referees would award powerful but poorly executed throws, other would be pickier on the form, awarding only waza-ari, on the grounds that poor form is a display of poor control.
This made it much easier to complain about the refereer judgement, w/o a clearly defined set of rules as an objective guide, and all left to each other's idea of "good Judo".

@@garybaker797 true. You cannot get certain grips, cannot fight defensively, can't grab the legs of your opponent, the ground work time is very limited, and when you fall really wrong while perfoming a "successful" throw, you're still awarded an Ippon. Like for example when people do an Uchi Mata but they fall on their head, in a real fight, this is not a good thing, yet they give you an Ippon. I don't like this and this is not how i was taught, a throw like that should be at most a Waza-Ari, not an Ippon. And now, you also can't do the classic Kata Guruma, how dare they! What's next?
Even thought Judo practitioners are still powerful, they would be even stronger if they trained in the old way, even if they aeren't going to use it on competition. Yes, yes now i'm blaming the schools and Judokas themselves, because even if you aren't going to use such technique in competition, you should still learn it if you consider yourself a true martial artist, and this is where the schools play out, because most Judo dojos are sports only, so (most of the time) they will teach you only the things that you will be doing in competition... Not leg-locks, not leg grabbing, not being extra-defensive, not throwing at any moment without falling yourself, not No-Gi Judo, not strikes, not self defense kata (Goshi Jutsu). Only and just only things that you will be able to do in competition.

I speak as a novice - but - it is not so much the way modern sport judo has evolved but the lack of the survival of traditional Judo for those who want to practice it. Everything in Judo has become oriented towards the sport system. The omission of leg grabs has dealt a serious blow to Judo, among other rule changes. The martial art was a complete grappling system that was effective.

    • @user-sg8kq7ii3y
      @user-sg8kq7ii3y 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

To say that modern day judo is not "complete", not effective, etc., is just as silly as saying that western boxing is ruined because they don't allow elbows, kicking, and knees. Or it would be as silly as saying that wrestling doesn't allow punches, kicks, and chokes. Instead of looking at things from a negative viewpoint, why don't you look at it from a positive standpoint. If you want to get really good at throws, then train judo or Greco Roman wrestling. If you want to learn submissions, learn BJJ. If you want to learn grappling where takedowns and maintaining the top position is your priority, then learn wrestling. If you want to get really good at striking with your hands, then learn western boxing. If you want to learn punches, kicks, elbows, and knees, then train Muay Thai. If you want to learn use of weapons, then train with the Dog Brothers. If you want to learn the ultimate self-defense, then learn to shoot a gun. Look at it as having choices.

I've been participating in Judo since I was a young child, and it is by far the Martial Art that I have the most experience with. I've also participated in Ju Jutsu (Japanese) and Freestyle Wrestling, both on the club level. However, I've never competed in any of these sports simply because of time constraints: Either school work when I was younger or erratic work schedules as an adult negated my availability on weekends.
I was an assistant instructor for a short time (approximately one and a half years), and I think the final straw was when the gym I was working for decided to eliminate what they called the "free sparring" period. Meaning that the students and instructors could use any wrestling or grappling technique they could at full contact on the mat to hone their skill for up to an hour. I was a favorite sparring partner for a lot of the advanced students, and once we stopped simulating actual fights, I simply didn't see the point anymore. Just for info kataguruma and tegur ma haven't been banned, it's only certain applications and the leg grabbing of them,, so as I understand it kataguruma with hand placement grabbing the leg is penalised as in a fireman's lift but in combination using the momentum of a failed attack, as allowed in a counter you using the impetus of tories failed attack is allowed especially one handed for example, ans as for teguruma initiated by Tori as a pick up body dump is illegal but for example if Tori attacks osoto gari and you anticipate the huge reap and side step using Tories own momentum assisting the dump with teguruma counter, then that's skillful and the essence of judo, minimum effort for maximum effect, it looks like a beautiful hand wheel assisted to complete ippon, your not grabbing and doing a physical wrestlers dump, your using timing and speed to help them on there way with momentum, and it's quite stunning, tbh if you get it right you don't even feel the techniques or the throwee being thrown,,its just side step anticipation and placing the hand under the thigh the guide to flat on back, as you know an ippon was scoring system was from old style Jujitsu/samurai and represented where when flat on back gave you total advantage to control, draw you weapon of choice, say a dagger or short sword and eliminate often in the throat, sternum, base of rear neck, clavical, liver or even up their arse to create shock and death on the battle field thats why the original scoring system was devised way back, it's a nice bit of history. I could be Wrong on the legality of teguruma and kataguruma but I have seen it as counters that way recently and not penalised, so who knows mind u things change all the time, in my day sankaku Jime was a submission but know I've seen it implemented as osoaekomi. I'd have won many fights if that were the case in the old days.

I did judo in the 80's and 90's - so I love "old school judo" (and wish you could still attack the legs) BUT I could easily put a video together that shows great throws and exciting action from modern judo and really boring clips from "old school" judo - especially if I go back to when the only "negative judo" penalty was "non-combativity" and there were no penalties for refusing to grip, excessively defensive posture and false attack. The video is incredibly misleading.

The Question is : Martial Art or Sport ???? ... I'm a practitioner of Traditional Shotokan Karate and i always thought that "SPORT" and COMPETITIONS RUINED Martial Arts. I am on the side of the martial art. Modern training methods MUST be combined with tradition, so that it improves and evolves, while remaining faithful to the roots. I believe that applying modern knowledge of biomechanics to the traditional method is the best way ... But martial art should remain so; unfortunately, the sporting drift seems inevitable ... Many no longer consider Judo a martial art, but a simple combat sport and this happened several decades ago. And I fear that Karate will suffer the same fate, unfortunately!

I will keep "sleeping" as You said : probably You didn't actually read what i wrote above ... a Martial Art must evolve, and using modern knowledge of biomechanics, updating physical preparation methods are excellent elements to combine with tradition. But the original spirit of martial art must be preserved and in my opinion this has not happened in Judo : I have heard many times from practitioners themselves that they consider their discipline a sport and no longer a martial art ... Unfortunately this is also happening with Karate and I lament this process! I hope Karate is never introduced into the Olympic games

Surely someone show this in front of Marius Vizers face cause IJF be delusional af with their new rules every year. I don't mind getting rid of the leg grab but the fact they got rid of spectacular throws is kind of sad. The more rules they make, the less attractive the sport becomes. They are the ones ruining the sport so people like Shohei Ono don't need to worry about being countered doing his Uchi-Mata and the Koreans doing reverse Seoi-Nage. The fact that they penalise so many things is dumb as well and what's crazier is they go after foreign players more than the Japanese. Olympics 2020 proved this big time.
