    I sailed Tammy Norie from Portsmouth to Poole Harbour for the August bank holiday, in tandem with Chris Boxer aboard Emmelène. It was a weekend of many meetings, but this video mostly shows Tammy, Emmelène, and Edward Hooper's Amiina.

    Excellent close look at the split jib.
    I have a 25' Westerly Tiger that was abandoned for many years and, as a result, requires a complete refit, internal and external. Given that the original rig is ruined and has to be 'junked', I thought I could take this opportunity to junk the whole boat! I've been reading about modern junk rigs for years. Now I think I have the chance to try it. But which one? The split junk by McGalliard? Arne Kverneland's cambered rig? The aero junk? I think I still have much more reading to do!
    Cheers

      M1S1R Sounds like a great project. Key questions in that decision: What type of sailing will you do? Aero and split are less well tested for voyaging. Where can you place the mast? Aero and split allow placement further aft. Suggest you join the Junk Rig Association (£7) and get a thread going.

    Hello, I am French and owner of a Contest 33 sailboat and I am interested in your type of rigging. Could you film a sail reduction in another video? In fact I wonder how you do the tack

      Hello! This is not perfect but you can see Tammy Norie's sail coming down at th-cam.com/video/Hcvxe6-SDSc/w-d-xo.html and this is also how sail is reduced under way. You can do this even with some wind pressure on the sail, to reef it. I do not have a video of me doing this because my hands are usually busy, but I will try to remember.
      If you are thinking of making a rig, please visit the Junk Rig Association at junkrigassociation.org/ for lots of advice and information.

    Why is the topmost boom sloping down - why not horizontal like the others ... ?

    • @TammyNorie
      @TammyNorie  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Gordon!
      There have been Western Junk Rig sails without the "top triangle" sloping yard that you mention, but they did not perform well upwind. One of these is the "hi power" rig you can see at junkrigassociation.org/sailplans_early_days . The aerodynamics are complicated, but it seems that there is quite a bit of lift generated by the top triangle when sailing close to the wind. This is discussed (briefly) in C. A. Marchaj's book on sailing aerodynamics.
      There is also a practical reason. In heavy weather, when the sail is reefed down, the top triangle is your storm sail. I have sailed Tammy Norie in F8 seas and this arrangement behaves very well.

    I think the guessing on the wind might be a bit off here.
    I have been running downwind in my achilles 24 with jib no.2 only ( main down, so 5,5sqm total canvas up) in a force 7 and constantly hitting hull speed. there are almost any boats that can show full canvas above force 5. I guess she does much better than it might feel.
    have fun!

    I'm not a sailor but I've been studying as much as I can the last several months. I'm very interested in the junk rig for when I get my own boat. I'm wondering, where the other boats faster because of the split rig or maybe because their sails had more camber than your sail which looks rather flat? Just curious, and maybe it's an ignorant question since I really am new to this.

    • @TammyNorie
      @TammyNorie  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello Jason! It's not at all an ignorant question, partly because it's so hard to know the answer. It's very difficult to set up scientific tests of sail plans, especially when there are so many variables to consider. Tammy Norie and Emmelène at least have the same hull, but Tammy Norie has more stuff on board. Amiina is a very light boat that has been tuned for racing. What can we conclude? Not a lot!
      I believe Emmelène has quite an advantage downwind simply due to larger sail area. Tammy is definitely a bit slow in light airs on all points of sail, and I'd like to make her a bigger rig. Upwind, people who've added camber report much better power at higher angles, and I believe Emmelène has a bit of an advantage here too; Tammy's sail is flat.
      My advice is to try out other people's boats. You're very welcome to come aboard Tammy Norie. Get in touch with me via the blog (linked in the description) if you're anywhere near the Solent.

    I am wanting to convert my 23' Kittiwake to Junk, could you share some detailed photos of your mast? I understand the rest of it, I am trying to size my mast, am converting from Bermuda Rig. Any help would be appreciated.

      @TammyNorie  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. I'm not sure I'd recommend copying Tammy Norie's mast dimensions, but you can see some details at www.flickr.com/photos/rptb1/albums/72157646571298799
      You can also read my blog posts on the topic of masts on Tammy Norie at tammynorie.wordpress.com/category/topic/part/mast/
      For conversion, I recommend studing Arne Kverneland's documents at junkrigassociation.org/arne where he gives a lot of details including mast recommendations.
      And in general I recommend joining the JRA and posting on the technical forums for advice.
      If you happen to be on the south coast of the UK you can contact me by leaving a comment on the blog and take a look at Tammy.

    Such lovely junk rig sails. May I know whether these were self-made or done by a commercial sailmaker?

    • @TammyNorie
      @TammyNorie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tammy Norie's sail is the original that came with her, and was made by a professional. Emmelène's sail was made by Edward Hooper, who is one of leading developers of the split junk rig. He's sailing Amiina in this video. Amiina's sail was also made by Edward. In fact, Emmelène's sail used to be on Amiina -- it's an earlier version. Ironically, Tammy's is the least complicated and would be the easiest to make!

    • @TammyNorie
      @TammyNorie  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tammy Norie weighs less than 1000kg and has 18.3m² of sail, which I am planning to increase to about 25m². However, I suggest reading the book “Practical Junk Rig” and consider joining the Junk Rig Association if you're planning a rig, to get the benefit of their archives junkrigassociation.org/archive

      @@TammyNorie 1 ton and 25m² its like regatta 26footer flying a spinnaker. That's a lot of sail! Is it because of Junk rig that you need so much sail?

    • @TammyNorie
      @TammyNorie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@vaidotasratkus7619 A squared-off junk sail downwind is doing the job of a spinnaker. Because junk rig is so easy and efficient to reef, you can afford to have a large mainsail area and spend a lot of time with it reduced. For heavy weather you can sail with just the last triangle. Tammy Norie can live with one large sail and carry no others; the whole 25m² will fly only in light winds. That is one of the advantages of a junk rig over e.g. a bermudan with a suit of sails.

    • @TammyNorie
      @TammyNorie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@vaidotasratkus7619 Just a note to say that Tammy Norie has run before a force 7 wind under her full 18.3m² and made a good 6kt speed; good for her length. I arrived several hours too early to get in to the harbour. On a run the sail is functioning a bit like a square-rigger!
