I have a feeling - with the quote from Better Off Worse in the description - that this song is also a meta-commentary on the experience of creating songs and "opening yourself up to the audience for enjoyment". The pattern of using injuries as paint - the line about "teenage aches of stunted growth"...
I feel as if it is very obviously a song about the artist attempting to push themselves to make darker music, in order to keep relevance- even if they are no longer in that mindset and returning to it is like re-opening a scabbed scar. Vermilion itself is made from a mineral that contains a large amount of mercury - making it, by definition, poisonous.
With that in mind, I hope everyone can enjoy Vocacircus' other works too.
Surprised I didn't see any comments about the theme of self-harm in this song (there probably are some I just didn't find them), especially since 'Better off Worse' had mentions of death/suicide, mentions of "recovery" (anyone who suffers from an ED or cuts knows what is meant by "recovery"), disordered eating and relapse in it. Pretty sure painting here = cutting. Brush strokes = blade swipes. That's why she only paints with vermillion, it's her blood not paint. 😭She's part of the canvas. I feel like it's easier to see it if you've self-harmed in the past.
To me this song is about trying to cope with the trauma of your past, but not having very healthy coping mechanisms and taking things too far (and dying for it).

Something i find very interesting about the end of the pv, and it might not be intentional but it's still cool, is that her silhouette is eventually covered back up by footsteps. Maybe the footsteps are supposed to be of the people who watched her destroy herself to create art, and we can see how there's so much more by the end, once she's become what she thought would be "art". But the way the footsteps cover up where her body was indicates that even with how hard she tried to make something, even going as far as to (seemingly) end her own life, her impact was eventually obscured by the effect of the people who looked at her "art". I dunno if it means anything but i still think it's a banger metaphor that fits the mood of the song.

idk if someone else has commented this yet but i saw some people mention accessibility with the subs- if the red CC are hard to read or overlap too much on ur screen, pick any of the other english CC in the options, those display normally! :) (also side note, both the standard CC filling up the screen like blood and hiding what reads like tetos internal monologue/diary entries/whatever u wanna call it in the CC options is genius)

Had absolutely no idea these were in there too! I think this is about Teto (the one featured here) poisoning herself - likely intentionally with toxic pigment fumes and blood loss - in order to create a "noticeable" piece of artwork.
At first (though this doesn't really change): she is happy to receive attention for her work( "A lot of people complimented my work today. I’m happy.) but that happiness quickly evolves into fear of the expectations and desperation.
I believe the expectations placed upon her to create another work of art caused her to seek out a pigment "brilliant" enough to be worth looking at. She begins regularly, if apprehensive, and slowly gets worse.
Given she is implied not to be using paint-brushes ("I haven't used mine in a while, the bristles are getting stiff"), it can be inferred that she at some point starts painting with something that does not require a 'brush' to pick up - blood.
At the beginning she likely went outside for some period of time; but after weeks and even months on end trying to complete her drafts, she closes the windows ("If I don't open a window, will I die? But if I open a window...") in order to... 'keep all the fumes contained'. Unfortunately, this means that she either: A, has a large supply of vermilion (red pigment made using cinnabar, which contains notable amounts of poison), or B, is draining herself of her own blood in order to paint. And she cannot stop, for any reason. ("Is this what they call “the point of no return”? I don’t think I could stop even if I wanted to.")
The day before she is intended to show up for the art exhibit, it is likely that the poisoning or blood loss finally claims her life. There are two lines about being unable to see, and both correlate with her falling unconscious while working on her painting. In either scenario, she is falling into a blood-loss fueled coma, or falling unconscious in the middle of a room filled with poisonous fumes, with no one around...

I thought vermillion is an orange color since Vermillion city is colored orange and in my language is called "Orania City". But orange is closer to red so... I'm not that wrong

I want to ramble about the topic of my theory of this song
From what I think from the lyrics and other comments this song seems to be about being unhappy with one's work and holding yourself back from growth to make others(viewers/source of income) happy. If you don't make the source of income happy and want to stay they leave and now your income is affected. Depressing songs are what people like, but once the artist becomes better and wants to write differently the income leaves. Which leaves the artist with a new reason to be depressed。
Now I'm gonna ramble. It makes me sad that this happens. People will love and praise someone but quickly turn their back for one "wrong thing." Nobody accepts change as a result of growth as a person. Nobody values art. Nobody values the hardwork put into art. Almost everybody is going to listen to this, then find the next thing. The next thing to entertain them and the next new biggest thing. Not many are going to think about the effort circus put into the music, lyrics, mixing. Not many are going to value the effort rice put into the art, video, and 127 hand drawn brushstrokes. People will be quickly to complain about the price of a handmade piece but not recognize the work put into it or that the price is that artist's paycheck.
As an artist myself my work has been greatly changing almost every month as a learn what I like to do and my skill increases, but I worry people will like my older works but not my newer stuff. Personally I'm very empathetic and care a lot about the artists I follow. I constantly worry about how their doing and truly wish the best for them. Not every one of circuses songs are for me and that's ok, I can enjoy the ones I do enjoy and maybe enjoy the next new one.
I have to cut this short because I have to go to work but I genuinely wish for people to value art more and I truly wish the best for all artists, I think about yall all the time and I want the best for you

For me, this song feels like it’s representing OCD. As someone who suffers from it, the lyrics “it forgoes any logic, playing the insane” reminds me of how no matter how much you tell yourself that these rituals have no meaning, you can’t stop.

The lyrics about restarting things over and over to be better and purer and cleaner really remind me of ocd, so do the captions overtaking the screen as the song goes on, and the notion of being overwhelmed by voices and being in a loop. It really feels like Teto is struggling with horrible invasive thoughts that she thinks she is causing. That’s my take on this song!

It might be a worrywat reach off of me considering the themeing of this song and better off worse, but-
While I personally am fan of darker/edgier music, I still wish for you to create the music You want, rather than one for the fanbase appeal. Though I do understand that aside from psychological side, it may also be hard due to finantial reasons if its your main source of money to live.
In the end, I just hope you're doing your best to keep yourself as sane and happy behind the curtains, as you can.
