Such a great video and great timing. We haven't started yet but this is helpful for going forward.

Such good food for thought! If I can remember, this video would be great to watch once every quarter or season as a reminder to re-evaluate. Like you mentioned, I find myself sliding into “school mode” which can stomp out the “home” mode. I’m in the final stages of prepping for the new school year (although we learn year-round so it seems a bit funny to say that) and your encouraging words are timely.

So glad to hear! Thanks for sharing that! It's nice to hear feedback. I completely relate...it's a constant slide and I have to regularly remind myself to keep our home the first priority. Blessings to you in your homeschool year!

Off topic! You are in great shape Sheri Although it’s not homeschool related you could tell us how you stay in shape ❤

Thanks so much! I think there are some parts of having a lot of kids that help you stay in shape just by nature of the lifestyle. 1. I'm always moving, don't sit down often, haha! 2. Because it is expensive for our whole family to go out, we eat mostly home cooked meals which I also think really helps. 3. Maybe this sounds like the opposite of how it should be, but I think being pregnant so often has helped keep me stay more proactive about my health than I otherwise would be.

When people ask me what grade my kids are in. I have to think about it because i tend to mix grades together and i take the kids where their at. I agree dont duplicate school at home, ive tried didnt work.

Haha! I am the same way. I tell the kids what grade they are in so they can answer people's questions, but otherwise, it serves no other purpose.

Also do you have advice on say ninth grade doing biology because that's what the grade calls for type of thing? How does older science work in Ambelside? I feel like we are doing a bunch of workbooks right now and want my kids to love school. I currently have a 7th and 9th grader. (My older two are already homeschool graduates)

Great question! To be honest, I don't follow AO as closely in the high school years because our high schoolers take a few classes (usually science, math, and other electives) at a local co-op. Also, I guess it would also depend on what your state requires for high school credits.
I will say that the more I homeschool, the more I'm a believer in kids learning 1. by interest and 2. in the way they learn best.
For example, if you have a child who is not a textbook type of learner, why not find a biology YT channel or have them check out biology books of their choice from the library? When our oldest took biology, another homeschool mom friend of mine planned 5-6 group lab sessions for kids to meet and dissect different animals and complete lab sheets to go along with it. It was really fun for them.
I'm sure, having two graduates, you probably have plenty of wisdom to share on this as well. My opinion is to think outside the box and allow them to learn in ways that interest them. When they enjoy it, they remember more and want to learn even more about the subject.
One cool Amazon Prime science channel we are following this year is Xploration DIY Sci. I plan on watching 1-2 videos a week with the kids. They all love them! And, I say, anything to keep the high schoolers engaged!
