@@OXFOOT hello sorry for the delay in responding. I was in the Yukon and still on the road currently I am in Fort Nelson getting an oil change before heading towards Yellowknife. For your question I did not use the fire box every night. I have two 5lbs propane tanks on my roof basket. So far I did not have to use the second tank. There is a video where a guy runs the fire box until the propane is all used. I will try to find the link and post it here. Safe adventures.
Hello I found the link unfortunately it was just a comparaison between Firecan and Lavabox. No test on propane consumption. Ignik probably have some data on consumption. If I have time I might run mine until a pound is consumed and I will let you know. Btw that could be a very informative video. Regards. I am back home in Yellowknife and wishing you safe adventures.
@@electricstartclint Oh man I'm legit doing the alpine loop later this month leading up to expo. It'll be fun though I did most of it a few years ago and it's some of the best views I've ever seen.
@@OXFOOT I did around half of it last year. Stoked to do the entire thing. We’re coming up from Oklahoma. You have any recommendations in South Central CO heading toward Lake City?
@@electricstartclint I wish I did, I almost never am in the south central part of the state. Only thing I know about the area is that you can get land for stupid cheap. From about south fork to Ouray I honestly don't even think I've ever been in that whole area in my life ha.
@oxfoot, hope all is well with your truck, have seen other channels using those, like you said very compact, probably you can use lava rocks for looks, great review and see you on the next one 😀 👍
Had to replace some hose on the trail but it seems to be working alright now. And yeah I’ve really liked the fire pit so far. Might do a follow up in winter when I’ve got 6/7 months with it.
I have a class B van and it has a quick connect for a bbq or whatever to my propane tank where I turn the propane on outside, my question is would the hose connector fit this small fire pit are the connectors universal?
So what connector on your end would go to the fire pit? Are you talking to the end of the hose where it would fit into a connection like a propane tank or the brass quick connect?
Great combination the only problem is between the two of those that's over $350 worth of product that little fire can is $199 that's a joke that's ridiculous
Yeah I think you could probably build your own and then get the growler if you wanted to save money. The Ammon can fire pits are mostly all around that price range $170-$250.
You could but there are plastics in it that I don’t want to remove so I prefer just using it with the lid off. I believe it would be a little in the way. 2: really depends what settings you use on it but it’s very efficient. I’ve used it up to 3 nights running it for a few hours each night on a fairly higher mode. Carbon monoxide I would hope would be very low but I’ve never tested it. It’s outdoors so I don’t always test things that are outside of my tent or vehicle for carbon monoxide. I can do that next trip I go on.
@@OXFOOT would the lid be compatible with one of my old ammo boxes. I think it would radiate more heat with a lid. Like a old barrel stove I built once. & you could turn it down real low. My buddy heater lasts about 120 hours with one 20lb tank.
Yeah I cleaned off the ones I bought from ignik and they don’t make a mess. I might try to wash the other ones I have and see if the same thing is true if the other ones also.
Nice to see it up close. It looks like with legs extended it is too tall by 2” to use the reflector I found. Definitely more compact and less messy than my current fire pit. Do you know BTU’s it produces?
Picked up 10lb growler with rei dividend bought the lava box at the expo. Went with it instead of ignik because it’s up to 289,000 BTU’s adjustable puts out more heat and lid seals so you can leave rocks in it less dust everywhere. Growler fits much better in The commuter.
This is superior to the diy or pro diy ammo cans because of the quick connect that is out and away from the can itself. The diy ones put super sketchy heat onto the hose. I have both. I only run the Ignik near my fam. I added the logs. Perfect combo.
I love the rocks in mine but seeing the logs does make me want to try them. The only reason I didn’t go with the logs was because with the offroading I do I wasn’t sure how the logs would handle bumping into things and would they eventually break. But maybe it’s worth a try.
Been seriously debating getting either this, or the Lavabox, i like the flame and output of the lavabox, but I do like how this has the built in legs, and I'm sure with the fire rocks, it'd look pretty similar to the lavabox flame. But now that you've had this for a bit, how long would you say it lasts on the 5lb propane tank?
I think the Fire box still beats it even with the rocks. For me I would rather have it burn at a medium height for a longer amount of time than high flames for a shorter period. Hard to say but I've been able to use it a few hours a day at least 3 nights. It's likely if you do it for many hours you may only get two nights or even 1. Maybe you could get several more trips with it if you only run it a short amount of time on a low setting.
@@OXFOOT yea, I'm thinking I'll pick up the firebox on the next big REI sale, besides, if I want a larger flame, all I'll have to do is get a hose with a bigger regulator since I understand this has the 5psi one and the lavabox has the 20. I figure this, with the fire rocks, and a 10psi regulator would be perfect! And thanks about how long it'll last, either way, sounds like it'll last way longer than the 1 or 2 $10 dollar bundles of firewood I use a night when camping haha.
One of those combos is at the top of my wishlist. If there was a version with orange straps on a black bag I'd pick it up. But really, wouldn't a black and orange bag be the obvious option just like the black and orange firecan? lol.. after saying that maybe I should turn in my "man card". Nothing to see here. Carry on..... Pick up some of those small fake wood and maybe even the black bag for a part 2 video. Go ahead and throw in some night shots while you're at it. BTW great video.
Nah I like my stuff to match, no man card taken. I considered changing out the bag for the black one as I liked it a little more but ultimately kept it.
Also, I’ll tell you how much night footage I tried to shoot but my lens pasture only goes down to F2.8 and on my phone it just never looks right. Maybe I’ll give it a shot in an Instagram reel or a TH-cam short or something. Black with orange would look really good. I wonder if you could shoot them a message on Instagram and ask who to reach out to about doing a custom one?
Yeah for the most part I only ever use it at night and just shut it off and leave it overnight. I’ve only used the rocks once but I’ll make sure to be careful with them.
True I had a video talking about that but it’s technically illegal to do and then transport it so I took the video down. Also don’t want to get sued if someone does it wrong and blows something up so I can’t really recommended people do that anymore.
Was stranded all day with a busted power steering line. Just now got the links up! Sorry guys!
Thanks for checking this out guys! Links will be in the description ASAP.
This will be a game changer for winter camping!
I hope so!
Don’t forget summer camping! You can run propane fire pits like this even during summertime fire bans
Like you said, the best thing about a propane fire is not smelling like smoke at the end of the night. 👍
For real. Love not having me, my tent, sleeping bag, and interior of my car smelling like smoke the next day.
Smelling like wood smoke is CAMPING. I like this fire pit and ordering from REI today. Thanks.
And also the ability to have a campfire during fire bans. I camp in the summer a lot and the propane pit is a must for my family
Just ordered! Thanks!
You get the propane, the fire can or both?
@@OXFOOT Fire can, already had a 5 & 20 pound tanks. May order the fire rocks. Thanks!
Great explanation and review. Got mine last month and using it at the moment in Alaska. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! I really appreciate it!
And yeah it’s great. You using both the propane and the fire pit? I’ve got a big trip coming up and I’m trying to plan propane refills around it.

No problem!
You buy the rocks on Amazon?
No I bought the rocks from their website
dose the green propane cartridge fit inside the firecan?
with the hose.
I doubt it, it’s a tight fit with the hose as it is because of the regulator on it. It’s one of those precision ones so it’s got a big old knob on it.
Very cool 👍
