You can hear the broom in the back throughout the song. In the video, there is actually a guy sweeping a broom across the floor. If you want to hear some good electric guitar playing by Neil check out Cortez The Killer, Down By The River or Cowgirl In The Sand. He has a vast and varied catalog. This was a great starting point.
GREAT reaction to a great and hauntingly beautiful song. Also great to see you change it up and appreciate a song like this. Interesting that this is your first song from Neil Young. He's got a huge catalog of amazing songs, and I think, based on what you just heard, you will be surprised at what a Rocker he is.
Neil has a really hard rockin' side and a more acoustic/mellow side. He's known as the godfather of grunge. Probably hard to imagine if this Harvest Moon is the only song you've heard of his.
You can dedicate a whole channel to Neil, CSN, & CSN&Y, and all the iterations that came out of those 4 guys. From the Hollies, to the Byrds, to Buffalo Springfield, and all their solo careers..Unbelievable catalog of music grew out from those guys. Enjoy the ride!
Thank you! I just bought the ticket and it's time to take the ride lol. I totally connected with this in a profound way. I was captivated. I can't wait to hear more!
Lee has so much incredible music to hear. There are so many great bands whose members have also put out amazing solo albums. Music is why we all need to live to 100.
Thank you! Oh I'm already hooked.. gonna be doing needle +the damage done. I can't wait. But ironically, I am am ex junkie so it'll be a hard hitting one more then likely
Neil Young is a Tier 1 songwriter, alongside the likes of Paul Simon, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Jimmy Webb, Rod Temperton and Barry Gibb. It would take you quite a while to go through his albums, but it is worth every moment. His style never settles for too long, but it is all still him. If you want a starting point for reaction purposes, try the whole album After The Gold Rush. Such a consistently good record that you could be fooled into believing it's a greatest hits album.
I'll add that to the list, thank you Matthew! I agree, and that's just from one listen to one track. So much passion and emotion in this song and the atmosphere made me so many feelings pop up out of nowhere. Now THAT is songwriting.
@@L33Reacts It won't spoil anything, I promise, but go and listen to Birds - it's just 2.33mins of heartbreaking brilliance. You'll be thinking "Shit, how have I not had this in my life?".
I'll make sure to add that one to the list. Thank you for the suggestion. I love finding songs like that. My most recent one was 'Aja" by steely Dan. I was like uhhhh where has this been hiding?? Lol
I got nothing to add to what you said, bud. As deep as Neil's catalog is, this is one I always come back to again and again. Love to see this on your channel and to watch you experience it.
Thank you my friend. I truly appreciate you. This was so damn good.. I can't wait to hear more now. I'm gonna go back to his older stuff. But this was enough to get me to listen to more! It's almost enchanting sounding...
All of us “amateur/hobbyist” guitar players owe a great debt to Neil Young for writing the best, most accessible, acoustic guitar songs ever. I literally taught myself to play guitar by studying Neil Young guitar tabs. I play this particular song nearly every day as it is so beautiful to strum. For any other budding guitarists out there who are curious, this song is done in drop-D tuning (low e string tuned down to d), and the tabs for this song are pretty easy to follow. And, as other commenters have pointed out, Neil had an awesome hard side, sometimes even referred to as being the grandfather of grunge. Definitely check out his early stuff such as Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River, and especially Cortez the Killer which I am currently learning. Another rabbit hole found! Good luck!
With the 'After the Goldrush' song i fell in love with Neil Youngs voice. He is something special. I recommend the albums 'After the Goldrush', 'Harvest' (not 'Harvest Moon' but that is also good) and 'Rust Never Sleeps' (Great partially live album).
Back in my music days, I played with two drummers who played on Neil albums...so many crazy stories, but the code of the road does not permit the unsealing of those life-chapters haha...
Neil has a lot of tunes that touch the dark subjects that other lyricist tend to avoid. Many of his songs are about the bad parts of our society. "Down by the River", and the "Needle + the Damage Done" are just 2 of them.
You will never get a bad suggestion for a Neil Young song. The Needle and the Damage Done is one of the most powerful songs ever written. Like the CSNY song Ohio, sometimes the shortest songs make the most impact.
For the exact opposite of chill, with the wildest, insanely loud guitar, try the live versions of Like A Hurricane, Cortez The Killer, or the studio version of Why Do I Keep Fucking Up? Neil am be the softest or the hardest. Great choice.
Check out the official video for this track. Sometimes these videos seem to have little to nothing to do with the song but the Harvest Moon video adds perfectly to the vibe.
Neil is a God. Saw him a few times including a Central Park gig and with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. You have to check out Buffalo Springfield which also includes Steven Stills, among others.
The live version seen/heard on his "Prarie Wind" live concert video is smooth as butter. He recruited several of his famous musician friends to perform in it. Look for the DVD. Highly recommended. Neil did it right after a brain cancer scare in the mid 2000s. And he's still going today. Peace out.

Dude, loving your channel. I don't know if its the old dude who likes when you young'uns find these gems or what, but I dig it. This tune is def one of my top 10s, just love it. You nailed the vibe, its warm but melancholy. When you listen to this just can't help thinking about a time in your life that this song evokes. Its expertly played and delivered by Neil and his band. The whole album is also wonderful but this track does stand out, it did get quite a bit of radio airplay back in the day. I'm an X-er, teenager and young 20s in the 80s. I was never a big Neil Young fan, I dug some of the hits. During that time I was way too obsessed with prog rock, jazz fusion and straight ahead jazz that I kind of eschewed any of what we call classic rock from the 70s. I was 26 when this came out and that song just floored me, maybe I was just starting to grow up and get out of my mindset and able to just enjoy well crafted music and not judge it for its technical acumen. After hearing this on the radio, bought the record and played it constantly. Other great tunes on this record - Unknown Legend, You and Me, One of These Days, War of Man. Thanks for covering it on your channel.
Hey bro great to hear from you! So glad you enjoyed it. This was my first listen to Neil and wow, it was so melancholic and romantic... in a lost love story kinda way. I have too many of those to count so it definitely hits hard. Thank you for commenting. I'm actually doing another song of his tonight
Fucking Monsanto and GMOs. We've been eating bioengineered food for a decade now. Cancer rates are through the roof. Hmmmmmm..... Micro plastics. We're all fucked. This whole system is coming down soon. That's why all the celebrities and ceos have been selling everything in secret. They know what's coming next year.
They have whole underground cities.... underneath the United States. Entrances in Maine and New Mexico. Insanity. And from the depths we shall rise. I wouldn't go fracking in the deep earth... many old things still stir there
This whole album is a gem! You should check out with Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Then check out Crosby, Stills, and Nash. The best harmonies ever!
I plan on checking them out! I love this guy's voice and acoustic work so much already. I mean damn. I was completely swept away by this song at points. So good
The video is him and his band performing in a small mountain bar actuall not far from his house in California. Cuts between present and past with his future wife bartending, and them dancing through the years. I think its his wife and Emmy Loy Harris singing backup. And video of the guy sweeping.
L33..got a few artists to check out.. Leon Russell stranger in a strange land. Tim Buckley Strange Feeling. Tim Hardin if I were a carpenter. Tom Rush No regrets. Just a few cool songs
Check out the video for the whole story my man! (The broom guy is in it! ) It's funny, but Neil Young actually sings off key alot, and everyone loves it. Including me!😂
Oh shit... yeah I definitely Do. The title speaks volumes. My arms healed thank god. I escaped with more then my life. I escaped with my looks for the most part.

Listen for the broom sweep. Todays popular Music is missing so much it ain't funny. Neil as written over 400 songs at that figure was from some years back.
Neil Young is a giant of rock and roll, but this song is later, gentler Neil Young. Very nice but not exactly essential. To get into his early, essential stuff start with his early rocker "Mr. Soul" and then his pre-proggy masterpiece "Broken Arrow", both of which he did when he was a member of Buffalo Springfield. Or if you want to dive into his first great hard rocker as a solo artist then go straight for "Cinnamon Girl".
Awesome! I'm gonna be doing broken arrow next! They recommend me that in the live chat. I really liked this. I'm gonna be checking out a lot more from him I feel like
@@L33Reacts Cool, the main reason I recommend doing "Mr. Soul" first is because a live version of "Mr. Soul" is used in the intro to "Broken Arrow". So if you listen to the whole album you would have heard "Mr. Soul" first and then heard it again as part of a later song. I guess a little like The Beatles did with Sgt. Pepper, a song refrain later in the album.
He's one of the most prolific song writers of all time, with beautiful melodies. Very deep rabbit hole. I'll be 74 I'm March, that's old! 😆
I'm gonna start digging! This was so touching. It really did conjur so many feelings and memories. It's crazy... he is one hell of a song writer.
