    these tiny little crustaceans form a beautiful source of feed for fish as they are rich in protien and work as natural laxatives for the fish. I personally had success in culturing them outdoors. I used dried cowdung mixed with grounnut oil cake to turn the water green. I added urea and single super phosphate to boost up the process and left the tank for about 7 days.once i got the desired emerald green colour for my green water, i inculcated a culture of daphnia magna in the tank. in 3 days time, i got a considerable quantity of daphnia that i could feed to my entire hatchery setup.2 important things that are to be considered while culturing daphnia are that there should be no chemicals in the water to be used for culturing and the daphnia should be harvested once every 2-3 days if you dont want the culture to crash...thats all...

      Aquarium Fish dry yeast is instant yeast...you have to activate it before feeding it to the daphnia by adding it to lukewarm water.

    • @6maquariumfish
      @6maquariumfish 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      how is this culture?
      mine have crashed after 3 days. i feed active yeast, change about 40-50% water everyday, have an aerator.
      only 3 days and they crash.

    • @flar3s539

      Aquarium Fish the key is to grow the feed inside the container...most of the people ask you to culture daphnia in the green water which is partially right.green water is not the primary diet of daphnia.it eats the infusoria that is formed after the death of green water.yeast increases the content of carbon dioxide in the water and that might be the reason why your culture is crashing.aslo if youre using a areator stone or the flow of the areation is too high, there are possibilities that the culture would crash.

    I have had studying on live fish food, specifically on daphnia since my comment on this video. A few observations i have made are as follows:
    1- Daphnia will grow the best in outdoor tanks made up of cement or plastic. The larger tank, the better the results.
    2- Outdoor tanks dont require areation. The phytoplanktons in green water will produce enough oxygen for the colony to survive. This stimulates the natural condition in which daphnias survive. Addition of areation only breaks the natural phenomenon of upwelling and downwelling. This hampers the reproduction rate of daphnia as they cannot stay stable for longer periods.
    3- If adding a areation, make sure theres no areation stone. Not because the areation stone gets clogged due to daphnia but because the stone produces fine bubbles which get stuck under the carapace of daphnias and make them float continuously. This kills the daphnias.
    3- If making a outdoor tank, theres no need for adding yeast in the culture for feed. Daphnias will feed well on zooplanktons from the greenwater. Adding yeast will only cloud the water and produce carbon dioxide.
    4- Make sure you dont add any nutrients that are in the chemical form when daphnia are present in the culture. Chemicals literally kill the daphnias. In the outdoor tank, first prepare the green water 7 days prior to adding the starter culture using chemicals like urea and single super phosphate. Let the nitrogen cycle complete and the ammonia be converted to nitrates completely and let the phytoplanktons begin consuming the nitrates. Once the colour of water is completely emerald green, then add the starter culture of daphnia.
    5- Make sure the water youre using is free from contaminants like filamentous algae. Filamentous algae can kill daphnia as it obstructs the movement of daphnia in the water column as it does to the fish.
    Feel free to ask any queries.

    Hi dexter good video , I have had great success using a home made sponge filter , changing about 30% water a day treated with sodium thiosulphate to remove the chlorine ( it won't remove chloramines ) and feeding with a mixture of yeast , spirulina and soya flour .dead daphnia will still have egg sacks attached which will hatch so you can use them to start off a seperate culture ! keep up your good works great channel.

    Hi Guys
    Gr8 info Dexter.😊
    Green water is water that has a green color from algae like ones you see in a koi pond or a tank water left in full sunlight which turns green. Its algae growing in water which we call green water.
    I would like to add that it's best to have multiple cultures going in case 1 crashes which has happened several times for me.
    I've also noticed that larger water volume the more stable the cultures become and are more successful. Small containers crash easily.
    One must also monitor the amount of feeding yeast as it quickly fouls up cultures. I feed yeast every other day. Making sure that the yeast cloud is completely eaten before feeding again. That simply means when the water is clear not milky color i feed again. Best to feed early morning than evening as it could quickly fouls water as they dont eat as much.
    Also if outdoors make sure and cover with fine net to prevent insects frogs and birds from preying off the culture. Be especially careful of dragonfly and larva as they drop eggs in water which hatch and eats up all daphnia. Having green water is also essential as it can suppliment feeds as I've seen if a culture is dying off i replace 100% water with green water and they population blooms back in about 1 week.
    For the feeding of yeast i use dechlorinated water from tanks (dont add dechlorinator to chlorine water) which i warm and add 1/4 teaspoon of yeast and spirulina each into a small bottle with a pinch of sugar. I allow to dissolve feed when cooled. I just eye ball the mixture feeding to the cloudness of water just to slight to medium until i just partial see bottom of tank. Any excess mixture i keep in fridge for 1 week. After one week of population bloom i would do 50% water changes or 25% twice weekly if i notice water smells sour.
    I harvest twice weekly like Sunday and Thursday so the cultures can breed more. I also sort the sizes and feed to various size fry from baby to adults. I usually also toss back some adults just to ensure they have breeders to continue in cultures. Good luck to all
    Hope this helps.

    Hi, Dexter! I so appreciate your video because it is much more comprehensive about daphnia care than most other videos I've seen. I culture daphnia in a 5-gallon tank on my desktop, and I struggle to keep a viable population maintained. I like that you included instructions on how to change the water in your daphnia culture. I know that's important, and it's something I do with a small aquarium vacuum covered on the end with a nylon stocking to keep from sucking the daphnia up.

  • @joek5161
    @joek5161 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I have normally relied upon freshwater plankton for feeding freshwater fish larva over the more popular brine shrimp and somewhat popular worm cultures. One of the nice things with them is that you really can't over feed with them. Unlike the worms and brine shrimp that can die off and pollute your aquariums if uneaten, the plankton just continue to swim around until one of the fish larva catch them and eat them. It also encourages more active hunting and chasing behavior, which from what I have seen has been good for the grow out process too.
    When you collect in this manner, the daphnia are going to be a mix of large rotifers, cladocerans, copepods and clam-shrimp. They all make great foods for fish - though the copepods and clam-shrimp can end up going after small fish larva.
    One trick that can be helpful when gathering them for feeding or when doing water changes. Most of them react to light sources. Either attracted to, or chased away. Most are attracted to it. If you go out when it is dark and shine a light on the edge of the culture tank - you will quickly have a large mass of food where the light hits the water. Scoop it out with the net for feeding. At the same time, you can drop a siphon hose down into the opposite corner of the tank in order to drain off some water and debris for changes.

  • @equestanton1017
    @equestanton1017 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow fantastic video thanks, it looks so easy. Yeast is a very good idea because once activated it is also alive of course, it's a single celled microorganism classified as a fungus so doesn't pollute the water quickly. I used to collect daphnia (magna) from the dense reed ditches between cow fields by the bucket load to feed the fish. Only little problem was that each bucket load and I couldn't collect too many or they would simply suffocate on even the short walk home, but each bucket load had an entire ecosystem in it. This of course fascinated me, I would even say thrilled me, but my fish didn't think so always. Amongst the wild daphnia there would most often be wild fish fry, small adult fish, assorted crustacean larvae, (some not palatable at all to goldfish fry),crustaceans like tiny shrimp, Amphipoda and also nasty predators and parasites like dragon fly larva lurking in there, hydra, fish lice etc. The soup of life. Cleaning large batches is difficult and risky so its advisable not to feed wild caught daphnia to your fish. Instead start a culture with some carefully screened wild daphnia, much safer. However for the lazy to facilitate a cleaner catch of Daphnia it's worth observing their habit in the wild. Try and get them from open water near the surface rather than sweeping amongst roots and mud or in deep shade. Daphnia are clever and will adjust to predator pressure by moving to the surface (vertical migration) during the night to feed on algae and then escaping to the depths to feed in the mud bacteria during the day, or exactly the opposite depending on predator habits. Taking a nice clean sweep off the surface water gets the cleanest daphnia what ever time they are there. If you do this too often, taking a great a quantity they reverse their habits. So alternate where you take them etc and still take care you dont introduce parasites, predators or wild fry which may or may not harbour diseases........at the very least wash them before feeding in clean water. If you micro manage your fish you can easily remove lice from their scales etc but in large set ups its not possible and you will have an epidemic on your hands involving some hefty, dangerous chemical treatments that need repeating.

    Dexter.i tried shrimp meal for them and it works fine. .yeast is good for dafnias but once you feed them to Fry's they get yeast infection here in India .

    Everytime you've uploaded a video, I can't help myself but watches it. You're inspiring and those videos of yours are motivating me. Even though I just have mollies, rosy barbs, 1 koi because the two have died and I doesn't know the reason. And of course I have swordtails and the fries of my mollies and swordtails have died also. Don't know the reason why, maybe it's all about the water temperature.

    Really great detailed video. Thanks. I saw some people using the first water you get from washing rice + pork blood as well. Though it's gross.

    What about spirulina? Some people say to feed them some spirulina powder that is mixed with their tank water.

    Would you do the same for water fleas? I have kept small cultures alive for at least a month without air but I do frequent water changes from aquarium water.

    Pump is just to agitate the surface water one way water gets oxygenated. So as long as you have something you can honestly use your hand if you don’t have the equipment.

      Kettering Tropang Padyak KTP It is hard to find daphnia’s in UK but Microworms can be an alternative for it.
