It slows down the muscular contraction thereby relieving the pain. So it can relieve any muscular pain like we feel in hands,legs and back during periods (Including uterine muscles)in the body. It doesn't have any side effects. Infact, my sir(he is a Dr. btw) said that if you feel like u are unable to bear the pain u should take medicine coz bearing such large amount of pain for long terms can have it's consequences and can affect the quality of ur life later. So there is NO HARM in taking medicines.
